One year ago today September 8, 1943 marked
the first real crack-up of the Axis. It was on this day
twelve months ago that Italy surrendered uncondi
tionally, following under-cover negotiations melo
dramatic enough to delight the most avid reader of
pulp thrillers.
The conquest of Sicily had been completed. Allied
armies were poised for the invasion of the Italian
homeland. The surrender of the Badoglio government
hit the Nazis with terrific impact. The effect was
(damaging militarily, disastrous politically.
SUBSEQUENT events have only speeded the dis
i integration of the Axis and the inevitable crushing
!of Germany. Allied planes have taken the skies from
the luftwaffe; the Kussians are smashing the wenr
macht back through the Balkans, and Patton's arm
ored spearheads are hammering the "western wall"
and vaunted Siegfried line. Buzzbombs and Herr
Goebbels' other promised secret weapons will not put
aside for long "der tag" when Germany will follow
Italy in unconditional surrender.

WITH the perpetrators of Lublin taken care of,
Allied military might will then polish-off the
bombers of Pearl Harbor. It is entirely possible that
another anniversary will see that job completed.

On the Air Map
In a full pace advertisement of United Air Lines,
appearing currently in national magazines, Medford
eniovs a conspicuous and strategic position on the
map of the company's aerial routes. It is good adver
tising for this community, and clearly shows how
well placed is the Medford airport for Pacific Coast
air travel when the post-war aviation "boom" comes
as it certainly will with larger, swifter and sater
planes and a public increasingly "air minded."

"THIS community's foresightedness in starting this
municipal airport nearly two decades ago will be
more apparent as air travel on the coast grows.
Recently, Rogue River valley choice fruit, flowers,
garden produce and trout were flown from the Med
ford port by United Cargoliner for ah "airborne
perishables luncheon" at New York's Waldorf
Astoria. It was but a preview of events to come a
convincing and practical demonstration of the air
plane's role in cargo as well as passenger transport.

IT is no military secret that Medford's airport has
been greatly expanded and improved under war
time army operation. When this city again takes it
over we will have larger and better facilities to accom
modate private and commercial users. Dividends from
Medford's airport investments in recent years will
soon be paid. H.G.

Paris, Sept. 8. (U.R) The
genius of American soldiers for
fraternizing with everyone they
meet is becoming a serious prob
lem for authorities as the armies
advance toward the hostile pop
ulations of Germany.
So far the fraternizing with'
civilians In countries whero they
have fought has been all to the
good. Friendly populations have
welcomed tho Americans and
the GI "ambassadors of good
will" no doubt have helped im
prove relations between the na
tions. In Germany it will be a
different matter.
When the Americans burst
through the Siegfried line they
will find an embittered, hostile
population which has been
bombed incessantly and which
knows it has lost tho war and
must face another dismal period
of postwar collapse.
No one will be waving flags,
making the V-sign or begging
cig.irets and candy and it is go
ing to be hard for the average,
and inherently friendly, GI to
understand.
Moreover, experienced stu
dents of Germany are convinced
that the nazi party long ago
completed plans to go under
ground with the final shots of
the war and that regardless of
the official end of resistance
there will be weeks and even
months of sniping and sabotage.
Lonely German roads prob
ably will be unhealthy places
for single vehicles and dark
German streets may be unsafe
for roaming Gl's for a long time
to come.
Once the allies enter Germany
authorities probably will Issue
a blanket older forbidding fra
tornizing with civilians.

I do not know how she made
out with her plan, disclosed in
an article in the Philadelphia
Teachers' association news letter
of April, which said the teachers
must lead the gradual emancipa
tion of children from their par
ents and become "mother substi
tutes." ...

thorities have just announced
they are dropping their class in
sexual education entirely. Al
though it never went as far as
romantic love and ran only three
weeks of the year, it was
unanimously conceded a com
plete failure.
"The boys and girls either
laughed or were scared to
death", says a wise surgeon and
physician member of the board
of education, Dr James A. Gan
non. ...

mond are taking similar action.
Only New York of the five sea
board cities checked by Dr. Gan
non will stick to sex education
this fall. They had the same ex
perience as Washington, he says:
"Teachers as a rule are not
temperamentally fitted or com
petent to give sex instructions

physician teachers would be
satisfactory, but they are not,
because they talk over the heads
of children.
"We will dispense with the
sex classes which were a part
of the physical Instruction

regular courses, such as biology,
such moderate information as is
constructive, non-controversial
and helpful."
Thus are the views expressed
in this column becoming pre
vailing and more popular (the
idea that human thought Is far
from perfection on the sex sub
ject, that no one Is competent
to teach sex, which is such a
highly personal and individual
problem. Not even psychiatrists
have yet accepted an agreed
course and no two members of
any board of education have pre
cisely the same attitude toward
sex.) i

RUT these views were not
" popular then. In Boston they
were especially criticized. A
professor of human relations
In the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology wrote me that frank
sex instruction had reduced
stealing In Wisconsin and said:
"Sex Is being taught In the
schools "With great success."
He was so obviously wrong
as to make a reply unwarranted.
If you could cure stealing with
sex Instruction, the education
should not be limited to 15-year-olds.

ONE physician tells me 90 per

their ideas on others.
It seems Boston Is thinking
taking hold, and acting, and not
in the way of the radicals. On
August 9 the business manager
for the Boston school committee
said discipline in the schools,
there was "terrible," demanding
correction to cure laxities. Au- j

papers told of a teacher who :
hired a large boy in her class at
10 cents a day to maintain order i
because she could not. August ;
11: "Teachers are afraid to tell :
the truth against the evil system,
fear to lose their jobs; blame
superintendents." I

government announced tonight
that the organized evacuation of
civilians from Greater London
and southern England, will be
suspended.
HUN LOSSES TOLD
London, Sept. 8 (U.R) -Radio
Moscow reported today that the
Germans lost 791,000 officers
and men killed In the nine weeks
period beginning June 23 on the
Russian front.
