Society and CLUBS Red Cross Meet To Be Attended By Local Woman Mrs. Leonard Carpenter of Medford will attend a three day conference of national commit tee members of the Red Cross Camp and Hospital Council Service, to be held August 29, 30, and 31 in Pacific Area Red Cross headquarters, San Fran cisco. During the conference, ac cording to word from the area office, future trends of this Red Cross service will be fully stud led and appraised. Special stress will be given to the problems of acquainting additional groups and individuals with the prim ary function of this Red Cross service; that, through the camp and hospital committees of the individual Red Cross chapters, information may be obtained as to the military and naval needs for furniture and equipment to be used for the relaxation and recreation of servicemen. In ad dition, through this service, community groups may learn of the needs for personal services for entertainment, hostesses and such courtesy services as shop ping and travel information, Red Cross leaders state. As a member of the national committee, Mrs.' Carpenter also assumes responsibilities as a council field representative, in which capacity she visits and works out cooperative function ing of the camp and hospital activities of the 17 chapters within her jurisdiction. Mrs. Carpenter's territory covers Siskiyou valley, coast and cen tral Oregon territories. Mistletoe Club Honors Member; Shower Planned Mistletoe club members gath ered at the Girls' Community club Wednesday for the regular meeting and during the after noon honored Mrs. A. J. Joyner with a layette shower. Lunch eon was served from tables cen tered with "baby shoe" vases filled with small flowers and gifts were arranged on a table with two stork figures. Contests were the diversion of the afternoon and prizes were presented to Mrs. Grace Wake field and Mrs. Ruth Bismark. Mrs. Ruby Mallory was intro duced as a new member of the club and a guest present was Mrs. C. W. Carlon of Portland, sister of the honored guest who is visiting here at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Arnold, Arnold Lane. Mrs. Stella Mae Hendrickson was also a guest. Young Stinson left Sunday for Monte rey, Calif., and Amarillo, Tex., where he will begin aviation training in the arm air corps. A buffet supper was served late in the eveninff. Jerry and Ralph and Mr. and Mrs. Stinson. Irvings Leave Today For San Francisco Mr. and Mrs. David M. Irving and son, David, Jr., are leaving today for their' home in San Francisco after spending several days here with Mrs. Irvine's Pa!,ents' "r- tan? M- E.ve" Irving is a chief petty officer in the navy and is stationed at Treasure Island. The Gillespie's son, Lt. (jg) Donald Gillespie left last week to report at Norfolk, Va., and later to Atlantic City, N. J., for reassignment in the navy. The young man had been on leave the past month after completing about a year of service with the navy as a dive bomber pilot. He was accompanied on the trip east by Lt. W. E. Harrison of Los Angeles, navy pilot with whom he served this past year, and the two plan a trip to New York city before reporting for duty. To Take Up Residence Mrs. R. L. McClure and son have taken up residence in Med ford white Mrs. McClure's hus band, an officer in the air Intel- j ligence service, is on active duty. The McClures, originally frorri it. Louis, mo., nave Deen in Everett, Wash., until recently, the officer having been station ed at Paine Field before going overseas. The McClures are re siding at the Findlay apartments on South Holly street. Mrs. Mc Clure is a niece of Mrs. H. L. Noblit, Harrison avenue. Portland Couple Leaves Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beneka of Portland have returned to their home after a two-weeks visit with their son, Merrill A. THE GRANGE Gold Hill Grange Ladies of Gold Hill grange H.E.C. met at the home of Chair man Howes at Glendora Gar dens Aug. 23 with large attend ance. Dinner was served picnic style on th lawn, and ladies worked on material for the ba zaar to be held later. A letter from Ethel Roork was read and one written to Wallace Iverson. Lyndal Cam eron and Dagmar Christensen were remembered by Flora and a prize went to Nellie Smith. A vote of thanks went to Nellie Smith for use of lawn and elec tricity for Grange picnic, Aug. 13. Next meeting, Sept. 13 will be held at the hall and ladies will quilt. Autenrieth and Long families will serve at next grange meeting, Sept. 7. Phoenix Grange Phoenix grange met in regu lar session Aug. 22 with Master Bill Poling presiding, and many members absent due to work in the fruit harvest. Program con sisted of songs and instrumental numbers by Brother Hackney and roll call of members, with each responding with a story or comment on his work. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Wallace who recently moved to Phoenix. At the next regular meeting, Sept. 12, serving committee will be Mr. and Mrs. Andy Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley, Roy Boln and Lloyd Colver. Washington, Aug. 26 (U.R) Hopes for further relaxation of moat rationing appeared defin itely at an end today as the gov ernment imposed new restric tions on the distribution of pork. Beginning Monday, the war food administration said, pack ers must reserve about one-third of all pork production for the military forces. WFA officials said this step was necessary to assure them an adequate supply. The army heretofore has been meeting requirements through purchases on the open market. However, hog marketings are at a seasonal low and are running some 10 per cent behind last year. The trend is expected to continue through the usually heavy fall and winter market period, reflecting a 24 per cent cut in the spring pig crop.
