I Valcov and Ismail Fall New Drive For Warsaw Shapes. London, Sunday, Aug. 27 U.R) Swift-conquering Russian troops, pursuing routed German forces in Romania, yesterday captured the big Danube river port of Valcov (Vilkov), cleared a twisting 92-mile stretch of Eu rope's mightiest river and drove to within eight miles of Galati and Foscani eastern and west ern bastion of the Galati Gap gateway to Bucharest. With the Soviet marine land ing parties and boats of the Danube river flotilla, Soviet troops also seized the great Dan ube river fortress city of Ismail. While Adolf Hitler's Roma nian debacle plunged to new dtpths of catastrophe beneath the might of the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian armies and by Ro mania's swing against her for mer ally, Berlin reported that Soviet troops had launched a powerful new offensive to seize embattled Warsaw. Moscow's war bulletins in part confirmed the enemy re port. Marsha! Konstantin K. Rokossovskys 1st White Rus sian army extended its control of the soutnern bank of the Bug river to 80 miles and began to outflank Praga, the Polish cap ital's eastern suburb, by cap turing Zalubice, 15 miles almost due north. The Germans, however, after accepting the agreement, assem bled their troops for an attempt ed coup to organize a govern ment of pro-Nazi Iron Guardists. Facing resistance from forces under King Michael, the Ger mans carried out three heavy air attacks on Bucharest, the spokesman said, but up to the moment their troops have been held back from some places in the capital by the Royal Guard. Heavy fighling has broken out between German and Rumanian ! troops in the Ploesti oil dis trict, the Galati area, and at the port of Constanta, he said. Anticipating further attacks on Bucharest. Royal Turhoties have requested the assistance of Allied airborne troops.. San Francisco, Aug. 26 (U.R) Government relinquishment of control of 104 San Francisco machine shops loomed today as Rear Adm. H. G. Bowen an nounced he would recommend such action to Secretary of Navy James Forrestal. The shops were seized at the height of an over-time work dis pute involving AFL machinists of Loge 68, International Asso ciation of Machinists. Bowen said that virtually all machinists now were obeying over-time work orders at the plants and that the latest "trou ble center" at price pump divi sion of Fairbanks Morse, had voted 24 to 5 to comply with the over-time schedules as de manded by the government. London, Aug. 26 (U.R) Bing Crosby arrived in London today wearing in his buttonhole a sprig of heather given him by a Scottish lassie who taught him to sing, "On Saturday Night Glasgow Belongs to Me" at the Glasgow station last ngiht. Crosby, who flew to Scotland Thursday to open an entertain ment tour of troop centers in the European theater, respond ed by teaching the girl his theme song "When the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Dawn." I opened here last night and brought howls of horror from the pure-minded and howls of disgust from the critics, who uaanimously panned it. Police censors heeded the pro tests of the former, cancelled this afternoon's public performance and viewed it with detach ment, they said at a private showing. Lt. Charles Snyder, chief censor, announced that "Two In a Bed" was detrimental to the morals of Detroit and or dered the show closed. Earl's brother, Clyde Fichtner, is also in Medford, on leave from his navy station at Treasure Island. Is Commander C. Aubrey Sander of the enlisted reserves, army air corps, has been pro moted to squadron commander at Dorr Field, Arcadia, Fla., ac cording to information received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Sander, Rt. 2, Oakgrovc district. Sander will have charge of eight instructors, two assist ant instructors and 50 cadets. He has been stationed at the field for the past three years. His brother, Capt. Harold San der of the Ferrying command, was recently home. He is station ed at Long Beach, Calif. The youngest brother, Fred Cyril Sander, also In the air corps, ts stationed at Drew Field, Tampa, Fla. Lieutenant Leaves Lt. R. D. Fifer of the 483rd bomber squad ron has left Medford after visit ing here with his grandmother. Mrs. F. E. Fifer, 10 Almond street. Lt. Fifer is stationed at the army air field at Harvard, Neb. In California Bill Van Dyke, a recent graduate of the naval aviation ordnance school at Nor man, Okla., is now stationed at the Los Alamitos air base near Long Beach, Calif., according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Van Dyke of Cargill Court. A graduate of Medford high school in 1943, Van Dyke entered the navy last November, At Miami Tom Gerety, sea man first class. AOM. is now stationed at Miami, Fla., for naval gunnery school training, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Don't sink the Navy. All the arms and services count plenty. Wo just ask you to write a few of these things between the lines and in the footnotes becauso we of tho Infantry wrote them out in blood. And, brother, there's plenty more where that came from. We've got other chapters to add and we write a bold hand. You'll see our footnotes on tho beaches of France. You'll find us crossing our t's in th: Hills of B.itaan. You'll recog nize our style in Flanders' fields. We'll make our X with crossed rifles all the way across tho world.
