Tonsillectomy Is a mongrel medical term (part Latin tonsil- la and part Greek ekto me) meaning removal of the entire tonsil, e x c I s 1 on of the tonsil, ex tlrpation of the tonsil. Ton sillecto my means exci sion, cutting away or re in o v a 1 of a Or Brsdv portion of ton sil; or, when done with the guillotine or combination guil lotine and cold snare it is pop ularly known as "clipping" the tonsils. I can think of just one condi tion which would warrant even an attempt to remove the entire tonsil If I were the patient and that is cancer of the tonsil. The operation in which the surgeon attempts to remove the entire tonsil (tonsillectomy) Is a major operation and it sub jects the patient to serious risk In every instance. The operation In which the doctor removes or cuts away part of the tonsil (tonsillotomy or "cliDPlng the tonsils") is a minor, office affair, rather less formidable and less painful than extraction of a tooth, and It sub jects the patient to no more serious risk than does extrac tion of a tooth. In my Judgment, based on years of hospital and private practice and years of study, simple tonsillotomy (or "clip ping of the tonsils") together with the adenoids if the pharyn geal or third tonsil is enlarged as well as the faucial or visible throat tonsils Is the only surgi cal treatment that is "indicated" in the case of a child or youth with tonsil and adenoid hyper trophy, enlargement, over growth. In actual practice this treatment proves satisfactory in practically all instances where it Is really Indicated. Mind, though this : does not signify that the opera- tion failed or that any further effort to remove the vestiges of tonsil tissue is advisable. It merely shows that the "special ists' who talk So ponderously about "getting all of the tonsil" are talking through their hats. Jor Renson today denied hail to Mrs Frances Andrews, 37-vearold society matron accused of slay ing 10-year-old Jay Lovett, on grounds there was evidence that Indicated "a murder was com milted" and there was "probable cause to believe the defendant guilty thereof." Mrs. Andrews, accompanied by her husband, Frank, listened silently and calmly as Judtfc Jor gonson announced tl.c decision which sent her back to her Mon terey county Jail cell to await trial on a charge of murder Sept. 13. Fcnton, director of organization for the American Federation of Labor, said the soldiers were beginning to un derstand that 'this strike talk Is purely propaganda." Most Favor Unions "Ninety per cent of them are In favor of unions," said R. J. Thomas, president of the United Automobile Workers' union (CIO). Fenton said he had run across about half a dozen who told him word was being passed around that they would not get their Jobs back when they returned after the war. "We put a stOD to that talk " Fenton said. "We have 180-odd .small and large contracts and every one guarantees that draft ed or enlisted men go back with accumulated service to their same Job or one of equal pay and status." David McDonald, secretary of the United Steel Worker (CIO), said 30rt,000 automobile work ers and 200 000 steel workers now in the service were being carried on the union rolls in good standing without paying their djes. AFL Also Aided A. L Wegener, assistant to the president of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, said that 14 per cent of the AFL mem bers were In service and were being accorded equal privileges.
