Sergeant Here Sgt. Robert Tuttle, senior gunner on a B-29 bomber and stationed at Pratt, Kan., is in Medford to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Tut tle, 232 Valley View Drive. He leaves Sunday to report back to his bombardment squadron. Sgt. Tuttle's brother, Second Lt.' Shelby Tuttle, is Instructor in an instrument school of the air transport command at Nashville, Tenn. Court Citations Charged by state police with driving cars with improper lights, Ralph M. Pierce, 18, of Medford was cited to appear In justice of the peace I court August 25 at 2 p. m., and1 Freeling L. Sawyer, 59, of Cave Junction was cited to 'appear Aug. 28 at 10 a. m. Car1. F. Bills, 24, of Coquille was cited to ap pear at 4 p. m. today on a charge of driving a car without an oper ator's license. . Daughter Born Mr. and Mrs. James E. T Mr J Walker, a storekeeper second class in the Seabees, is stationed at Camp Thomas, Davisville, in the disbursing office. Walker was formerly office manager of the Crystal Springs Packing company here. Barbara Lea weighed six pounds and five ounces. The Walkers have one other daughter, Diane Louise, Called by Illness Called to Medford by the serious illness of their mother, Mrs. F. M. Cor lies of 117 Laurel street, who suffered a stroke a week ago,! are Lt. (jg) L. D. Corlies of the coast guard, stationed at Ketchi kan, Alaska, and Mrs. Frank Quicke of Los Angeles. Lt Cor lies was accompanied here by his wife. Mrs. Corlier is con fined in Sacred Heart hospital, her condition remaining un changed. She is also the mother of Mrs. George A. Codding, 1015 Queen Anne avenue. Mrs. Loeffler Here Mrs. A. J. Loeffler and daughter, Mary Ellen, have arrived in Medford from Parkvllle, Mo., and will spend the next few weeks here. Mrs. Loeffler Is a house guest of j Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Bauman, 215: North Ivy street, and Miss Loeff ler is with her sister, Miss Grace Loeffler, who returned to Med ford several weeks ago. The Loefflers formerly resided here, leaving about a year ago when Lt. Com. Loeffler was assigned to Park college in Missouri where a naval training program is being carried on. Harper on South Columbus avenue and with other relatives in Prospect. Vanderpool Leaves Pvt. Charles Vanderpool left Wed nesday for his new post in Texas 1 after spending a 10-day furlough with relatives and 'friends in Medford. Since March he has been stationed at Camp Roberts, Calif., where he completed basic training July 15. His special training has been second echelon mechanic. Pvt. Vanderpool is the son of Mrs. Mabel Vander pool and a brother of Virgie Vanderpool. Fichtner Here Clyde Flcht ner, SP(T)2c in the navy and stationed at Treasure Island, is in Medford to visit his father, Carl Fichtner, 613 South Holly street Fichtner, chemical war fare Instructor, will remain for several days, planning to leave about Sept. 1. He will be accom panied south by his two children who have been spending the summer In Grants Pass with Mrs. Fichtner's mother, Mrs. John Daley. . Assigned Pvt. James C. Gould, whose family resides near Central Point, has been assigned to the army service forces train ing center, Camp Plauche, Newi Orleans, for basic military train ing, a news release from the camp states. After six weeks of basic work he will receive nine weeks of specialized train ing to fit him for duty with the army transportation corps which is charged with the mission of transporting men and war ma terial to the theatres of oper ation throughout the world. THE GRANGE Central Point Grange Entertainment for the Central Point grange meeting Aug. 4 consisted of an entirely memor ized 50 minute musical program presented by a group of Mrs. Eve Prentice's Accordion Troup ers. The youngsters, aged 9 and 10 years, were in formal dress, the girls in floor length dresses and the boys in dark trousers with white tuxedo coats. On Aug. 18, a program telling of the whereabouts and activi ties of servicemen belonging to the Central Point grange was presented. Poems to fit the occa sion were recited and Mrs. Ruth Clark of Central Point sang two solos. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Pat terson were chairmen. STEAK'S A STEAK Salem, Mass. COL F The Silver Star for gallantry in action and the Bronze Medal for meritorious service have been awarded to Lt. Col. Stuart G. Fries of Washington, D. C, the nephew of Katie M. Grieve of Prospect and Mrs. O. C. Pur keypilo of 806 North Holly street. The general orders for the dec orations were Issued by com mand of Ma. Gen. Charles H. Gerhardt, commander of the 29th Infantry Division In France and former commander of the 91st Infantry Division when it was being trained at Camp White. They were sent to Mrs. Grieve by her brother, MaJ. Gen. Amos A. Fries, retired, of Wash ington, D. C, father of Col. Fries. The order describing the action for which Col. Fries was awarded the Silver Star said: "For gallantry in action on June 20, 1944, in Normandy, France, Lt. Col. Fries did without per sonal regard for his own safety. continuously expose himself to enemy machine gun, rifle and mortar fire as he directed the action of a company of me dium tanks as they supported an attack by a battalion of in- fantry in the vicinity of Thnneh unmounted and com pletely exposed to enemy fire at short ranges, Lt. Col Fries directed the tanks so as to con tinue the attack, and by his con duct and bearing under extreme ly dangerous circumstances, gave inspiration to those around him and reflected great credit upon the military service." The order of the Bronze Medal read as follows: For meritorious achievement as battalion com mander from June 6, 1944, to July 10, 1944, in Normandy, France." Lt. Col. Fries, commander of a tank battalion, also received a commendation from MaJ. Gen. L. T. Gero for "the splendid sup port given to the infantry ele ments of the 29th and 1st In fantry Divisions in the capture of beachhead objectives" by the tank battalion. Lt. Col. Fries has never re sided in Medford. WILL ENJOY SWIM IN TOPSIDES POOL Mr. and Jlrs. Alfred Carpen ter will be hosts Saturday at Topsides, their home on Old Stage Road, for a swimming party for members of the Junior Red Cross who have volun teered their time this summer in the Junior High Jeep Shop, the Hobby Shop or working in the Junior Headquarters Shop. Supervisors of the shops are Invited as well as mothers who are helping chaperon the group. A Rogue River Transit bus will leave the Junior Red Cross headquarters at 10 a. m. Sat urday. This is the second time the company has furnished free transportation for the annual picnic. Each child should bring his own "nose bag" picnic lunch, swim suit and towel. Ques tionnaires were sent to 5000 graduates and former students. A majority of the 1800 who re plied indicated a desire to take up life where it had been Inter rupted by the war. Transactions increased over the recent totals. Profit taking appeared in many of the recent favorites. War issues encountered some selling and this group made the poorest showing. A few of the peace shares managed to register small net gains, although recent ly firm utilities were depressed. Ralls and steels, leaders of the so-called war Issues, were prin cipal losers.
