I gather from his f a t h e r's letter. Th r e e years ago the boy developed rheumatic fe ver. This the father seems to attribute to the old injury. If the diagno sis is correct, the rheumatic fever is an in that is, not Or Bmdv fectious disease, contagious or c o m m u n icable but caused by germs, and the germs (usually a strain of the well known Streptococcus re lated to if not identical with the itrain that causes septic sore throat, scarlet fever, sometimes acute tonsilitis or quinsy. If rheumatic fever wa3 coming to the 'boy it was coming regard less of whether the boy had ever suffered any injury. A year ago the boy had acute appendicitis, was operated on. A few days after the operation he suffered a recurrence of the same joint condition as he had had three years ago. But this time the joint inflammation was gone by the time the boy left the hospital. Now the boy's father thinks It is certain that rheumatic fe ver manifests itself only when the body has been subjected to some weakening experience. "By this I do not mean simple exposure, change of tempera ture or that sort of thing" ex plains the father. "Instead I re fer to that weakening process body experiences from any severe shock, illness or injury." You see the boy's father is bound and determined to con vince me that lowered resist ance Is a contributing cause of illness. He doesn't use the words "lowered resistance" but Instead the words "thut weak ening process." ' f The boy Is now a forest rang er. I do hope he doesn't permit worry over getting his feet wet or being exposed to sudden change of temperature or cool ing off too quickly after sweat ing to cramp his or prevent him from enjoying his work. fear of exposure to cold, dampness, wet, sudden chilling and the like must be a miser able state of mind for an out door worker to have. It will probably make little impression on the mind of the poor geek who harbors that fear, but on the off chance that it may set some one thinking I'll say there is nothing in hy giene of which I am more cer tain than that such exposure, if you call it that, never con tributes to or causes any illness (other than frostbite or freez ing), however uncomfortable it maybe at the time. THE GRANGE Live Oak Grange Members of Live Oak Grange met In regular session at the Girl Scout hall, Aug. 21, Frank Greenwood acting as master in absence of Frank Marshall. Two names were voted for rr.cr.ibc ship and three applications rs.-ri. It was decided to put on 1st and 2nd degrees at next meeting, Sept. 4, for a class of nine. After grange meeting, refreshments were served by the committee, Kate Rhueling, Mary Mattson and Myrtle Whipple. For next meeting, each lady is to bring apple pie. Forty-four grangers and their families enjoyed a picnic Aug. 13 at the Frank Hall home. An other picnic will be held in Sep tember, place and time to be named later. H.E.C. met at the hall, Aug. 17, for a social meeting. A stork shower was held for two mem bers, Mrs. Violet Thompson and Mrs. Florine Higinbotham. The ladies received many nice gifts.
