Evanson left Medford last week to visit her husband, a storekeeper second class sta tioned now at the naval base at Port Hueneme, in southern Cal ifornia. She is staying at Ven tura. Minor Accident N. T. Vin cent of 1319 West Main street and C. V. Monia of 711 King street drove cars involved in a slight mishap on North Holly near Main street Monday after noon, according to a report on file today. - To Portland William von der Hellen, Jacksonville Star Route, left Sunday for Portland where he will undergo an oper ation tomorrow. Von der Hel len is the father of Mrs. C. W. Rose and Hugo von der Hellen of Medford. To Appear Charles W. Mar tin, 17, of 531 Spencer street, was to appear in justice of the peace court this afternoon on a state police charge of reckless driving. Martin was arrested last night on Oakdale avenue at West Eighth street, police said. In Army James Herbert Cummings, Robert Earl Pettie and Russel Henry Hendrickson were inducted into the army Aug. 14, it was announced to day by Local Selective Service Board No. I. On the same day, Ralph LeRoy Rosenberger was inducted into the navy. Examiner Coming A travel ing examiner of operators and chauffeurs will be in the K. P. hall next Friday and Saturday between the hours of 9 a. m. and 5 p. m. All persons wishing licenses or permits to drive cars are asked to contact the exami ner between those hours. In Texas Pvt. George Sam uel Payant has arrived at the infantry replacement training center at Camp Wolters, Tex., and has been assigned to a bat talion stressing heavy weapons, according to a news release from the camp. Mrs. Payant makes her home at 539 West Tenth street. Leaves N. L. Nagler, Los Angeles,' business representative of Christ Church of the Golden Rule, left this morning after spending a few days in the val ley on business. Mr. Nagler, who states that the church is making arrangements to pur chase various land in the coun ty, plans to return to-Medford in the near future. Visiting Hre Cpl. and Mrs. Roy Pursel are here from Camp Cooke, Cal. They were married in Santa Barbara July 24, Mrs. Pursel being the former Clara Faye McKee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd McKee of 115 N. Peach St. The couple are visiting Mr. and Mrs. McKee, and Cpl. Pursel's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stimpson of Cen tral Point and other friends and relatives. Promoted John F. Thomp son, stationed in the Aleutian Islands for the past two years with the army air corps, has been promoted to the rank of captain according to word re ceived by Mrs. Thompson, who resides in Central Point. Capt. Thompson was stationed at the Medford air base for a year and a half before being sent north. He has been in the army 12 years. White completed gunnery school at Farragut Idaho, before com ing home and reports next at Shoemaker, Cal. .... In Arkansas Pvt. Florence J. Runnion of the Women's Army Corps is now at Pine Bluff, Ark., according to a WAC news re lease. Pvt. Runnion's unit re cently left Ft. Des Moines. Iowa, for the Arkansas post and Pvt. Runnion is with the head quarters company there. Her Medford address is 118 North Peach street. ... Son Home Pfc. Louis W. Powell will leave tomorrow for his station at San Luis Obispo after a brief furlough here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Powell, 414 Valleyview drive. Also here are his sister, Mrs. Phil Gilstrap and son, Phil, Jr., of Salem, the latter planning to return to Salem later this week. ... Van Dyke Graduates William R. Van Dyke, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Van Dyke of 7 Car-- gill Court has recently been graduated from the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Nor man, Okla., according to word received from the navy depart ment. Upon completion of his training at Norman, Van Dyke received the rate of seaman first class in the navy. He will now be transferred to a naval unit afloat or to another shore station for further instruction and work. BOOK ON BENEFITS READY FOR VETS Washington, Aug. 22 (U.R) The Office of War Information today made available for veter ans of World War II a guide book outlining the rights and benefits to which they and their dependents are entitled. The phamphlet, first of its kind prepared by the govern ment, is officially called "Your rights and your benefits, a handy guide for veterans of the armed forces and their dependents." The OWI said more than 2,- 000,000 copies have been printed in the first edition for distribu tion to servicemen by the armed forces. Veterans who have already been discharged may obtain copies of the guide book from draft boards, offices of the vet erans administration, local of fices of the U. S. employment service, or community veterans' information centers. Mekong river is 2500 miles long. SAVES "SUZY Q" IN HANGAR FIRE AN AIR SERVICE COM MAND DEPOT (Somewhere in England) The man who saved the "Suzy Q" has been rewarded. Master Sergeant George C. Smith, Medford, holds the Sol dier's Medal for heroism in sav ing the battle-famed Flying Fort ress from destruction in a hangar fire. . The presentation was made at a recent ceremony at this large air service command repair and modification depot in England, where Sergeant Smith is now as signed as an engine mechanic. A gasoline fire broke out in the hangar at Hill Field, Ogden, Utah, where he was working on the "Suzy Q" shortly after his return from Guadalcanal. Flames were raging under the ship, threatening the lives of 50 mechanics in the hangar if the "Suzy Q" exploded. Sergeant Smith, a safety engineer in civil ian life, sprayed the contents of two extinguishers on the fire as the flames licked around him. Disregarding his own personal safety, he finally brought the fire under control. He is the hus band of Mrs. Patricia Smith, 835 East Main street, Medford. Be fore the war he was safety en gineer for the Baash-Ross: Oil Tube Co., HUntington Park, Cal. Master Sgt. Smith Is the son-in-law of Dr. and Mrs. James C. Hayes and made his home in Medford for some time, being stationed at the Medford air base. Mrs. Smith is at present in Vancouver, Wash., where she is dental assistant to Capt. Walt E. Hoppe, former Medford dent ist now in the army and sta tioned at Barnes General hos pital in the department of oral surgery. HUNTERS TO GET SHELL SUPPLIES Washington, Aug. 22 (U.R) The War Production Board an nounced today it will remove temporarily the ban on the sale of ammunition to hunters be cause animals and birds are causing widespread destruction to crops and livestock in all sec tions of the country. The agency said formal action will be taken in a few days. The ban originally imposed in May, 1943, and relaxed for the 1943 fall hunting season was re imposed last Jan. 1. WPB officials said that large numbers of sheep, cattle, and other livestock have been killed by wolves and coyotes, while foxes and weasels have killed domestic fowl. Crows, wild ducks and pheasants were de scribed as the greatest menace to crops. Pfc. Claude Atkins Serves At Air Base North Africa Area 'It's tough work at times, but well worth the trouble when I realize that perhaps this is as close to the big fight as I will get. Anything, as long as we can get this war over fast and the boys home." That's the opin ion of Pfc. Claude E. Atkins, 22, Rural route 1, Medford, who is a heavy auto equipment oper ator for a north African air serv ice commandbase, according to an announcement from his squadron. The soldier, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Atkins, enlisted December 13, 1941. and nas neen overseas since Janu ary 14, 1943. I Before entering the service, Pfc. Atkins was employed in ; fruit packing and farm work near Medford. In the former , work, he was associated with the Bear Creek Packing house.
