NURSES NOT WANTED I am eighteen years old, have had two years of high school, and believe I can meet the phys- 1 a 1 require ments for ad mission to nurse training school. I have been working for two years (since I left school) but never w'th sat isfaction, as I want to be come a nurse. I have check' Dr Brd? ed with numer ous hospitals recognized by the state, and find that in their eyes I am practically illiterate, since I am not a graduate oi college nr at least of high school. My parents will consent to my going to another state and I can pay a reasonable tuition fee if necessary. Can you tell me of any hospital nurse training course I can take In the circum stances? (G M. Something about this young woman' letter reminds me of many letters I have received from young women who are now punils In a recognized nurse training school or have complet ed such training and are now graduate or, In some Instances, registered nurses authorized to use the letters R. N. after their name. It Is not a point of simi larity in the letters however This young woman's letter Is without a fault In form, punctu ation, spelling. A good many of the letters I receive from young women now studying nursing and from graduate or registered nurses are not. . I mention this because, after all, graduation from high school or graduation from college doesn't necessarily imply a high er degree of Intelligence than the Individual who has had only a year or two of high school may have. What this country sorely needs right now Is a supply of good two-yeai nurses. What the coun try is getting is a supply of two year (that is, trained in a two years course) nurses who have been robbed of a year's service by the hospital where they re ceive their training before they are allowed to begin their ca reers. That, children, is the main reason for the three-years course. It is pretty soft for the hospitals. I have ohrcrved some of the nurses produced by the present system at work. I'll say that If I were the patient Id trade a flock of 'cm for one two-year nurse who probably had no more than a year of high school, if that but she knew how to take care of her patient. Phone 5817 IN NAZI GAMPS Salem News concerning the world situation, Insofar as Ger man censorship permits its dis semination, is of keen Interest to American prisoners of war in German prison camps, accord ing to Information received by Charles A. Sprague, president of the Oregon War Chest, from from War Prisoners Aid, YMCA, through the National War Fund of which War Prisoners Aid is a member agency. Contributions made by resi dents of Jackson county to the local war chest help the Na tional War Fund finance the work of War Prisoners Aid, Mr. Sprague explained. A wireless message received by War Prisoners Aid from Its Genva headquarters states that "so-called newsrooms" made available at various prison camps are greatly appreciated and are visited daily by hun dreds of prisoners eager to learn whatever news is released con cerning world affairs, said the report to Mr. Sprague. Prisoners Study About 50 per cent of the pris oners at the largest German prison camp are engaged in studies and preparing for exam inations, the report stated. In the language classes, German, French, Russian, Spanish and even Norwegian and Japanese are being studied, and the camp reference library, stocked with books provided by War Prison ers Aid, is usually crowded with young officers engaged in study. Most of the men at Stalag Luft III are "vary young, cul tured and feel most keenly the influence of captivity, with the first two or three months the most trying owing to the sud den change from free living to boredom and confinement," said the report. Among the articles supplied by War Prisoners Aid, those most appreciated are elec tric light bulbs for theatre ond study rooms, books and phono graphs. Full Auto Load Or No Extra Gasoline For Ride To Work Attention has been called by district and local OPA officials to the new rigid program requir ing all homc-to-work drivers to carry full cars or bo refused supplemental gasoline rations. The program went into effect Aug. 1 all over the nation. Under the new program ttje local war price and ration board can issue only gasoline for a 30 day period to drivers without full car sharing arrangements. During the 30-day probationary period, everyone Is expected to recruit either a full car of pas sengers to be carried regularly or enter a car pool. If this is not done, and alter nate transportation Is available, no further supplemental rations may be issued, the order states. Drivers arc urged to form ride pools and rotate cars.
