Visiting Sister Mrs. Lucretia Slater of Yreka has been visiting for the past week with her sis ter, Lettie L. Stansble of 524 N. Grape St. On Vacation Dr. A. A. Soule will be absent from his office the balance of the deek due to a semi-vacation period. He will re turn August 21. Council Meeting Routine business will be transacted by the city council at its regular semi-monthly meeting in Mayor C. A. Meeker's city hall office at 7:30 tonight. Return Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Stevens of Portland have re turned to their home after spend ing several days as house guests of William Isaacs at his home on the Rogue River. To Meet Crater Lake Post No. 1833 and its auxiliary, Veter ans of Foreign Wars, will hold the regular semi-monthly meet ing at the armory tonight at 8 p. m. followed by a social hour and refreshments. Hobbs Qualifies Charles Hobbs was found qualified for general service in the armed forces following pre-induction physical examination in Port land last week, it was announced today by Local Selective Service Board No. 1. To Klamath Mr. and Mrs. El wood Hedberg, 1206 East Main street, spent the week-end in Klamath Falls with Mrs. Hed- berg's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Benoist, and her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones. Leave Mr. and Mrs. Bert Samuels and small son, Ronnie, left here Sunday for their home in Salt Lake City after spending a week here on business. Former Medford residents, they stayed at the residence of Mrs. Myrtle Hobbs on their visit. Rasum Leaves Sgt. Albert Razum left yesterday for San Francisco to visit a sister, and will go from there to Santa Monica Army Air Force replace ment center for reassignment. He had been visiting relatives in Medford for the past two weeks, having just returned to this country after more than two and a half years overseas duty, in the South Pacific area. To Honor Guest Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Butler of Los Angeles will be honor guests at the picnic supper planned by Royal Neigh bors of Medford for Thursday evening of this week. The picnic will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Miller, Orchard Home Drive, at 6:30 p. m. and. those desiring transportation are sked to call 4318 Thursday morning. Party Cancelled The swim ming party of the Loyal Work ers class of the First Christian church, which was scheduled for Wednesday night at Jackson Hot Springs, has been cancelled due to illness in the class, it was announced today. I Grass Fire A small fire, cause unknown, burned over dry grass behind the Medford Concrete Works yesterday, causing no damage, according to local fire men who were called at 6:08 p. m. to extinguish the blaze. California GOP, Bricker Assured By Earl Warren Cincinnati, O., Aug. 15 (U.R) Gov. John W. Bricker, repub lican vice presidential nominee said today that he had been as sured by Gov. Earl Warren that California will go republican in November. Bricker, here to address the national encampment of the United Spanish War Veterans, said he was "encouraged but not surprised" by preliminary public opinion polls which showed the republicans in the lead for electoral voles. "California," he added, "thus far is showing a democratic trend, but Gov. Eail Warren tells me that polls out there nre meaningless until September and a different story will be told then." Guam Hero Finds Promoters, Pals Hard To Dodge Portland, Aug. 15 (U.R) It won't be long before duty sum mons Chief Radioman Ray Tweed, naval hero who eluded Japs on Guam for 31 months before making his escape. Tweed's 30-day leave ends Wednesday when he reports to the navy in Seattle. He spent the first portion of his stay in San, Diego with his wife and two children, then came to Port land to visit his mother and oth er relatives. Tweed remarks that escaping the Japs was "almost as strenu ous" as evading the host of pro moters, friends and others seek ing the story of his experiences, which can not be disclosed un til released by the navy. Young Gen. LeMay Commands B-29's Washington, Aug. 15 (U.R) Maj. Gen. Curtis E. Lemay, 37, the army's second youngest of ficer of his rank, has been placed in charge of operations of B-29 Superfortresses now blasting away at Japan and her looted territories in the Far East, the War Department an nounced today. His official title is "com manding general of the 20th bomber command of the 20th air force" in the China-Burma-India theater. He succeeds Brig. Gen. Kenneth B. Wolfe who was transferred to Wright Field. Dayton, O., as commander of the material section of the Ma terial and Service Command. Japan Slated For Full War Footing By United Press The Imperial Japanese diet will meet early In September, Tokyo radio said today, and is expected1 to place the nation "on a complete and absolute war time footing to cope with new situations recently developed." Premier Kuniakl Koiso's new cabinet voted today to convene the diet. The government was expected, the broadcast said, to "clarify Its Immutable resolve to prosecute the war to final victory." TAKEN BY DEATH Ernest W. Liljesrran, a resi dent of this community for the past 32 years, passed away at his home, 112 S. Newtown, early Thursday. A mining engineer, he was well known throughout the country for the accuracy in his work. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ada Liljegran and a sister-in-law Miss Cecilia Whelpley, Medford. Private services will be in the Conger-Morris chapel Thursday morning, with the Rev. Harry Hansen officiating. CHARLES D. DES MAZES Charles D. DesMazes, 70, pass ed away at his home in Klam ath Falls Friday. Services will be held there Thursday morning with interment following in Sis kiyou Memorial Park, Medford. Mr. DesMazes was born in Bedford, Mass., March 31, 1874. He made his home in Medford from 1930 until moving to Klam ath Falls in 1939. He was em ployed as a carpenter while here. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Fre da DesMazes, Klamath Falls, and three daughters, Mrs. Shir ley Brown, Yakima,' Wn., Mrs. Dorothy Milligan, Klamath Falls, and June, at home.
