Explained by O'Mahoney. Washington, Aug. 10 (U.R Sen. Joseph C. O'Mahoney, D., Wyo., chairman of the Demo cratic senatorial camDaign com mittee, said today that a survey Indicating California would go Democratic in the November election influenced Gov. Earl Warren to decline the Repub lican vice-presidential nomina tion. O'Mahoney made the asser tion in a statement answering cla ms of the Republican senato rial campaign committee that the GOP is sure to win five sen ate seats from the Democrats in November and could win con trol of the senate with victories in six "doubtful" states. Downey Seen Sure Cailfornia was one of the states which the Republicans listed as "doubtful." O'Mahoney prophesied re-election of Sen. Sheridan Downey. "It was because Gov. Warren had made a survey of California prior to the Republican national convention which convinced him that the state is overwhelm ingly Democratic that he de clined the Republican nomina tion for vice-president, which then fell into the unwilling lap of Gov. Brlcker," O'Mahoney said. The Renublicans listed New Jersey, Indiana, Iowa and Idaho 1? Dewey carries that state, and listed among other possibilities Kentucky, Missouri and Washington. O'Mahoney claimed Indiana and Illinois for the Democrats and said the "if" concerning New York state "obvIously is a very big one." "California and Utah are cer tain to re-elect the present Demo cratic senators, Sheridan Dow ney and Elbert Thomas, respec tively," he said. Idaho Held Doubtful His comments on the other states included: Idaho "A very large vote was cast against Gov. Bottolfsen (the GOP senate nominee) in the Re publican primary based on the fact, I am Informed, that he used his executive authority with the Idaho legislature to de feat the will of the people as ex pressed in the 1942 election with respect to the old age pensions. I have no hesitation in saying that the Republicans ought, from their own point of view, to list Idaho among the doubtful states." Washington "Sen. Mon Wall gren (nominee for governor) and Congressman (Warren G.) Mag nussen (senate nominee) have al ready proven their vote-getting abilities and Washington is ac knowledged to be Roosevelt territory."
