Miller United Press Correspondent With the Americans In France, Aug. 9 (U.R) It was massacre plain, bloody massa cre that occurred on this tree lined road outside Le Mans. But it was massacre of the enemy. We lost only one man killed and 15 wounded. While an American bulldozer shoves the charred remains of a Nazi Panther tank into the ditch so traffic can be resumed to ward the front, bespectacled Major Edward Hamilton of The Dalles, Ore., tells me about the ambush that littered this road with dead Germans and smashed and blackened tanks and trucks. 50 Nasi Vehicles "The Germans never knew what hit them,' says the major, little awed by his own de struction. "They were retreat ing. Must have been 50 vehicles in their column. We looped around and came Into the main highway ahead of them. "We set up two tanks and machine guns across the road in good concealment. The Ger mans didn't know anything was in front of them and down the highway the column poured at ; 40 miles an hour. "We let them get within 30 feet of us. Then we opened fire : on the first truck with machine i guns, halting it and Jamming the entire column." Brakes squealed and tank treads rasped as they reversed. Tho column jack-knifed up into an Indescribable Jumble. Then American guns cut loose along its entire length. Machine guns pinned the Germans Inside their turrets, sieved trucks and ignited ammunition which went up like skyrockets. "Poured It On" Then the Americans "walked" antitank and artillery fire up and down the column. "We really poured It on them," said Sgt. Carl Chlsholm of Los Angeles. "There were dead and dying Germans all over the place with blazing cars and exploding gas tanks. Smoke and flames were so thick we couldn't see the target some times although it was right on top of us." Somehow 230 dazed and Heartiest Congratulations ....
