Skin becomes hot and moist, blood pressure rises, some fever occurs, there Is increased breathing rate and the victim becomes extremely restless and thrashes about screaming with pain. The belly becomes rigid as a board but not tender to pressure. Blood count shows leucocytosia of 25 000 or more (increase in number of white corpuscles above the 8000 or so per cubic millimeter In nor mal blood). So there you are. Now what to do? First a shot of morphine with atropine, to relieve or at least moderate the pain, spasm and shock or anxiety. Then intra venous calcium chloride solution Injection Into a vein. The subcommittee first reveal ed the labor-renting racket in a March 14 report which charged that certain "engineer ing companies," with tho appar ent approval of the war and navy departments, rented skilled workers to war plants at rates from S2.60 to $12 an hour when the men themselves received from 65 cents to $2.7S an hour. Traveling and living expenses were often added on. Today's report said that one Detroit firm paid Its employes from 50 cents to $2.75 an hour base pay and In somo Instances rented them out "at a flat rate of $273 to $350 a week." By John Hlavacek United Press War Correspondent A fourteenth Air Force Base In China, Aug. 2 (U.R) It was only a routine ferrying mission for Irvln . A. Erickson of Oak land, Calif., and seven other fighter pilots flying in forma tion over China. Then Erickson' plane fell behind. Its cooling system had broken down and his radio com pass and radio went out. By the time Erickson reach ed base, he had intercepted five Jap dive bombers and shot down two of them; was himself shot down and made a belly landing in a rice paddy where he was strafed by pursuing en emy planes; was beaten by Chinese coolies who mistook him for a Japanese; was rescued by Chinese soldiers. Returns In Style Erickson returned to an American base in a sedan chair with a platoon of Chinese sol diers for escort. The veteran pilot was flying alone when he saw five Jap bombers over their target. I attacked immediately," said Erickson. "With a long burst directly astern, one Jap burst into flames and fell straight down and crashed on the edge of the town they were bombing." Then I closed in an another straggler and made two attacks. Each time, the enemy ship turned, enabling his gunner to get hits on my ship. My third ttack apparently killed the pilot because his ship suddenly dove toward the ground and crashed in flames. Engine Heats "I could now see only two enemy ships in the air. My en gine was overheating, but I managed to close in astern and fired a long burst. But at the same time his gunners got to me and my engine suddenly quit." Erickson s plane landed in a rice paddy, bounced over a re taining ditch and came to rest In the next paddy. There, he got out of the plane and tried to make his way to a nearby farm house. One enemy plane began diving and strafing, but Erickson escaped injury by bur rowing in soft mud. "Thinking myself safe I ap proached a farmhouse where I noticed a group of coolies," said Erickson. "They appeared ex cited but I didn't think much of that. Before I realized their in tentions I was struck on tho head with a club." When Erickson came to, he was tied to a post and being beaten about the neck, shoul ders and back. One anerv coolie arrived with a two bladed knife used for harvest ing rice crops. Soldiers Save Him The arrival of Chinese sol diers saved Erickson. They dis persed the muttering mob, open ing a few scalps in doing so.
