Society and CL UBS Mrs. C. H. Reese Displays Paintings Mrs. Clarence H. Reese, wife of Major Reese, post chaplain at Camp White, entertained about fifty guests at an art exhibit and tea given at the Outpost Friday afternoon, July 14. Inluded in the display of paintings, all done by Mrs. Reese who does not paint pro fessionally but has exhibited paintings several times before, were landscape scenes from the northwestern part of the United States and this locality in par ticular. One portrait, of Chap lain Reese, was also shown. California Visitors With Local Relative! Mrs. W. L. Stuttaford of San Francisco and son, Stanley, are guests at the home of Mrs. Stut taford's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Brittson of 845 East Ninth street. Mrs. Stuttaford's sister-in-law, Mrs. Don Brittson of Pleas anton, Calif., is also visiting in Medford at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Bran don of 211 North Ivy street. With Mrs. Brittson are her chil dren, Judy and Buzzie. Large Crowd Attends Outpost Dance Friday Over one hundred persons at tended the regular Friday night sport dance and open house at the Junior Officers' Outpost on Sixth street this week. The dances are held particularly for officers recently returned from overseas duty and stationed tem porarily at Camp White or visit in Medford. Miss Royce Newman Visiting In Valley Miss Royce Newman of Raton, ?J. Mex., is the house guest of her aunt, Mrs. Max Kulbe of 120 Genessee street. She will also visit with her brother, Britt Newman and family, who recent ly moved here from Prineville. She will be in the valley for two weeks. AIR TO NEW HOME Los Angeles, July 22 (U.R) Military strategists and harassed industry moguls take a back seat on limited air travel tomorrow when a pair of 21-day-old twins are bundled into a TWA airliner, beginning a 1300 mile trip to their new home near St. Louis, Mo. The twins are Stephen Lloyd and Sharon Loy Bair, children of Warworker Lloyd Bair of Long Beach, Cal. Mrs. Bair died five days after giving birth to the babies on July 1. After the mother's death Bair was unable to maintain his home and sought to take the children and another daughter, aged five, to relatives in Elkhart, Mo., 30 miles from St. Louis. JAPS MOPPED UP ON BIAK ISLAND Allied Headquarters, South west Pacific, Sunday, July 23 U.R) American forces mopping up Biak island off the coast of Dutch New Guinea report an ad dition 229 Japanese dead and 57 prisoners through Friday, Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced today. In the Aitape area of northern New Guinea, where an estimated 45,000 Japanese trapped troops have been trying to break through the Allied net, only pa trol activity was reported in to day's communique. When you need the services of a Printer, TELEPHONE 6375 'TROUT,' HERO SUB OF PHILIPPINES, IS LISTED AS LOST Washington, July 22 flJ.B An American submarine which helped perform one of the most daring feats of the early days of the war has been lost, the na vy department revealed today. The submarine was the Trout, which slipped into Manila bay under the cover of darkness in February, 1942, to deliver am munition to the Corregidor garri son and to bring back a fortune in Philippine gold to the United States. The skipper of the Trout, Cmdr. (then Lt. Cmdr.) Frank W. Fenno, Jr., of Westminster, Mass., has another sea .assign ment now. But the commanding officer at the time of her loss. Lt. Cmdr. Albert H. Clark. 33, of 35 Irvine drive, Orinda, Cal., was a member of the crew when the Trout sneaked into Manila bay under the noses of Japanese guns. The loss of the Trout was an nounced simultaneously with the loss of another submarine, the Tullibee. Both probably were lost in the Pacific, where Amer ican underwater craft have sunk 654 Japanese ships, probably sunk 37, and damaged at least another 115. Total American submarine losses now stand at 27. The Trout, commissioned in November. 1940, and built at the Portsmouth, N. H., navy yard, had a standard displacement of 1475 tons and carried one three inch anti-aircraft gun, two ma chine guns and 10 21-inch tor pedo tubes. Her normal comple ment was 65 men.
