FOUR MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Society By Olive Powells Observe 47th Anniversary At Home Sunday County Commissioner Arthur E. Powell and Mrs. Powell ob served their forty-seventh wed ding anniversary last Sunday, June 23 at their home In Central Point. The Powell wero mar ried at Belle Fourche, South Da kota. June 25, 1897 and have been residents of this district since 1809. First residing in Medford, the family moved to Central Point In 1931. Mr. Powell has been ldentl' lied with the printing and pub lishing business for many years and at present is editor unci pui Usher of the Central Point American, a weekly newspaper. He has been a county commis sioner for the past two years and Is a nominee in the coming elec tion. The Powells have seven sons and daughters. Carroll Powell and his family reside near jSagle Point, Ruth Powell Jollry Is in the Women's Army corps and Is stationed in New Hampshire and Kenneth Powell resides at home, assisting his father at the newspaper. Othars are John Powell of Klamath Falls, Harry Powell of Spirit Lal:e, Ida., Helen Powell Parker of Vancou ver, Wash., and Dorothy Powell Townsend of Everett, Wash. There are 13 grandchildren. The family held a reunion four years ago, and another is contemplated after the war. ' . Daughter Arrives From S. America To Visit Parents Friends of Mrs. Warren B. Smith, the former Annavelle Walker, will be Interested to hear of her arrival in this coun try lest week from Santiago, Chile, the 6,000-mile trip having been made by plane. Mrs. Smith reached San Francisco Thursday and Is a guest of her sister, Mrs. Da Watkins. As soon as trans' portation is arranged, the two will come on to Memora. Mr. Smith is superintendent of the lower division of Pan Ameri can Airways, with headquarters In Santiago, and It has been six years since Mrs. Smith has been noma. While In Medford Mrs Smith and Mrs. Watkins will visit their parents, Mr. and Mrs A. W, Walker. 410V4 East Main street. Mrs. Smith plans to re main a month. While in the county Mrs. Wat kins will also visit her son, Bobby Watkins, of Trail. 4 Venita Gardner Is Honor Guest Venlta Gardner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Gardner of 323 South Peach street, was honored with party on her eleventh birthday Monday, June 26. Games were played and later in the afternoon refresh ments were served from a table decorated in pink and blue. Venlta was presented with many lovely gifts. Those present were Colleen Atterbury, Inez Schlclgh, Lou Reta Schlcigh, Betty Clark, Irene Carr, Geraldine Waldow, Kathleen Jones, Claudia Cooper, Nola Canon and the honoree Venita Gardner. Later In the day refreshmnrts were served to Mr. and Mrs. M. "C. Murrey, Mr. Clara Barry Wilbur Gardner, and Helen Gardner. 1 Chlaf Minger Leave For Station In Utah Chief Pharmacists' Mate C. R. Minger left Medford Sunday for hit station at Clearfield, Utah, to await orders from Washington. D. C., for his return to sea duty. Chief Minger hud been at the home of his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Minger, 2117 Capital avenue, while in Medford. Mrs. Mincer with their sons, Ray mond and Robert, who also have been guest here, left Thursrtay morning for a short visit with relatives at Vallejo, Calif., be fore joining Mr. Minger In New ; York. Units Projects end accomplishments of the Daughters of the Ameri can Revolution were reviewed this week by Mrs. Bert B. Lowry, Medford, state regent of Oregon, who selected the peak period of the Fifth War Loan d lve for the statement since the efforts of the Daughters have been largely directed to war loans, the blood donor service of the American Red Cross and similar work during the war. Purchases of war bonds by the various units of the Daugh ters of the American Revolution have now passed the million dol lar mark, the state regent re ports. This figure does not rep resent the individual purchases of members, but purchases of cnapters, state units and the national organization. Also considered outstanding is the contribution of more than $330,000 by the Daughters to the blood donor service of the American Red Cross, Mrs. Lowry reports. Part of this fund was spent to purchase equip ment for the Red Cross blood plasma center in Portland, and for centers in other parts ot the nation. In all, the Daughters have purchased 38 mobile units, equipment for 18 blood donor centers, 19 station wagons for use by the Red Cross, five sedans, one ambulance truck, three other trucks, two mobile canteens, one sterilizer and one heater. In addition the Daughters themselves have volunteered by the hundreds as blood donors, the regent states, and are "repeaters", donating blood on a regular scheduls. Projects of the tumor mem bers of the D.A.R. are the pur chase of "seeing eye dogs for the blind and the purchase of Berman "metal locaters". These locaters, the regent explained, are appliances used by doctors to locate pieces of shrapnel and other metal In battle victims. The locaters were first tried after the disaster of Pearl Har bor and are now widely used by service doctors In battle nrcas, reports to the organization indi cate. Picnic Is Given Wednesday Night For Mrs. Carter A picnic given Wednesday evening on Nell Creek near Ash land honored Mrs. Roy R. Car ter, who Is leaving Medford soon to reside In Hilt, Calif. The affair was sponsored by the staff of the county clerk's office, Mrs. Carter having been on the staff for the past eight and one-nail years. During the evening the hon ored guest was presented with a gift. Present for the picnic supper were Mr. ana Mrs. ueorio n. Carter, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Tucker. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Whittle of Ashland, Mrs. Chas. Mr. Carter preceded her to the California city, having taken up residence there about a month ago. 1 Mdlord Taacher Leaves For San Jose College Miss Vivian Johnston. 302 Slark street, left last week for San Jose, Calif., where she will attend Teachers' college this summer. Miss Johnston is a teacher at the Lincoln school of Medford. After the summer session at the college, Miss Johnston will visit lit Oakland before returning to Medford. GROCETERIA NUMBER 1 Sixth and Central OPEN TODAY 9 a. m. to 7 p. m. Lida May Baylor, Lt. John Childers Wed In Medford Talent The wedding of Miss Lida May Baylor, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. I. Baylor of Talent, to Lt. John W. Childers. son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Childers, also of Talent, took place Friday, June 23. The service was read at 7:30 o'clock in the evening at St. Mark's Episcopal church by the Rev. George R. Turney, rector. Miss Baylor's wedding gown was of white satin fashioned with a full skirt and long train. A band of orange blossoms held the fingertip length veil and her bridal bouquet was of white sweetpeas and pale pink roses. She was attended by Mrs. Alice Joanas of Talent who was gowned In green net over taffeta and carried red roses. Best man for Lt. Charles was Eugene Smith, Talent. Mrs. Ernest Conrad played the wedding march. Lt. and Mrs. Childers left after the ceremony for a wed ding trip and have now return ed to Talent and are at the home of Lt. -Childers' parents for the present. The groom leaves soon for Santa Monica, Calif., to report for duty with the air corps. , Last night Mrs. Clarence Hoidrldge and Mils Agnes Lacy entertained at the home of Mrs. Frank Hoidrldge here for Lt. Childers and his bride. The affair was in the form of a shower party and about 80 guests were Invited. Both the lieutenant and his wife are well known in the valley. Mrs. Childers graduat ed from Talent high school with the class of 1941 and later at tended the Southern Oregon College of Education at Ash land. For the last IS months she has been on the staff of the First National bank In Med ford. Lt. Childers graduated from Medford senior high school' and also attended the Ashland college. He recently returned to this country from Italy where for a year he was attache to the AAF as a bomb er pilot. Mrs. Walter Allen Entertains Friday At Dessert-Bridge Mrs. Walter Allen was hostess Friday evening to a number of friends, entertaining at a dessert bridge party. The affair was at her home, 1006 East Jackson Boulevard. Dessert was served at eight o'clock. Prizes for high and low scores at bridge went to Mrs. Ray Frlsble and Mrs. Arthur Spencer. Guests were Mrs. A. A. Seekatz, Mrs. Ted Horneeker, Mrs. Larry Espey, Mrs. Al Downs, Mrs. Mnrlln Gramse, Mrs. Ray Frlsble, Mrs. H. E. Gar ner, Mrs. Phillip Steere, Mrs. Zane Kemler, Mrs. Bren Starch er, Mrs. Arthur Spencer and Mrs. William Tucker. Friends of . Mrs. Steere said their farewells during the eve. nlng, since the family leaves the first of this week for Massa chusetts. First Lt. Steera has been stationed at Camp White for the past two years. Week-end Program At Club Popular Week-end activities at the Outpost continue to be popular with officers stationed at Camp White, particularly those re turned from overseas assign ment. Friday night of last week another ot the series of dancing parties was held and tonight the usual Sunday evening buf fet supper and musical program has been arranged. Supper is served beginning at 6:30 o'clock. Last Sunday night more than 30 officers, their wives and guests enjoyed the evening at the club. 1 1 Portland Family Hare j To Visit Relatives Mrs. Edward R. Court, Music Association Meeting Delayed; Smith Here Later The June meeting of the Jackson County Civic Music as sociation board has been de layed because of the inability of Franklyn Smith, Civic Con cert representative from New York, to be in Medford at the time planned. According to Seth Bullis, president of the as sociation, Smith Is now in the state of Washington and before coming to Medford for a meet ing with the board must spend some time in Eugene working out the preliminary details of a Joint town and university as sociation. Many Interesting artists and attractions will be available for Medford next year according to the correspondence with Smith. At the time of his meeting with the board, the date will be de termined for tho annual mem bership week in the fall. From Its successful first year, plus the general satisfaction with the five concerts presented-last year, it Is apparent that the Jackson County Civic Music association has more than ade quately filled a community need, Mr. Bullis states. The as sociation will enter its second year with a small cash surplus, which Mr. Bullis says speaks well for the plan that makes concerts possible on a self-supporting, financially sound basis.. Bridge-Luncheon Given At Outpost For Mrs. O'Brien Mrs. Kenneth Luckey enter tained at luncheon and bridge recently, the affair being at the Officer's Outpost June 23. The party was in the nature of a farewell for Mrs. George W. O'Brien, who with her hus band, Lt. O'Brien, left last week for their new post at Camp Crowder, Mo. Twelve friends were invited for the afternoon. Prires for bridge went to Mrs. Thomas Flannngan, Mrs. John W. Hors ley, Mrs. Kent Burt and Mrs. Robert Standish. L. Sanderson honored Miss Janet Ross, whose marriage to Cpl. Wayne Dickinson of Eugene will take place July 9. The affair was at Mrs. Sanderson s home, 16 Ross Court. Dessert was served early In the evening and was followed by the presentation of gifts to the bride-to-be. An unusually clever centerpiece marked the table at which the honored guest was seated. Blossoms of sweetpeas, delphinium and roses formed an aisle for miniature figurines of a bride and groom and an arrangement of candles and ribbons simulated the altar. Other guest tables were cen tered with bouquets of mixed garden flowers. Guests 'nvlted to the shower party were Mrs. T. D. Production Unit Farewell Party Given Wednesday Members of the Camp White Red Cross production unit en tertained Wednesday afternoon for a number of officers' wives leaving Medford this week or In the near future. Director Of Club, Sergeant Safford Announce Trothal Announcement was made last week of the engagement of Miss Rena Semenza to Staff Sgt. Don Safford. Miss Semenza is direct or of Service Club No. 2 at Camp White and the sergeant is at tached to the Special Services Branch of the Service Command) Unit, Camp White. Both have' been stationed at the post for nearly two years and both have made many friends In the valley.. Date of the wedding has been I set for July 15 and it will take place at Chapel No. 3. Miss Semenza Is the daughter of Mrs. J. L. Semenza, Reno, Nev., and Sgt. Safford's parents are Mr. and Mrs. George Safford of! Portland. Sgt. Safford has cooperated with townspeople of this district i in staging many musical and en tertainment programs for both army and civilian affairs and has aided with all five of the valley's war loan drives. He is at present ' on a tour of near-by towns and cities in connection with the fifth loan drive. Leaves For Missouri , Lt. and Mrs. George O'Brien left Wednesday of last week for Missouri, where Lt. O'Brien will be stationed at Camp Crowder. The O'Briens had resided In Med ford for about a year and a half, and in recent weeks the lieuten ant had served as post signal of; ficer at Camp White. Navy Mothers Cancel Medford Navy Mothers' club will not meet next week, since the regular meeting day would be July Fourth.
