1 1 TUMAN 5 SOLDIERS AND CWIUANJAZED Under FBI Probe, Pleads Guilty To Child Theft To Fool Marine. San Diego, July 1 (U.R) FBI agents today were investigating the story of 23-year-old Mrs. Hel en Kreger, who pleaded guilty to child stealing this week, that she had married five servicemen and one civilian, and had sought a divorce from only one, local FBI Chief Harold Nathan revealed. Mrs. Kreger said she "did not know why" she had married so many men, but claimed that she had receiyed only one govern ment allowance check from the servicemen and had returned it to the government, Nathan said. Mrs. Kreger, of Vancouver, Wash., where she said she had applied for divorce from one husband in April, 1943, pleaded guilty in superior court here Thursday to charges of child steading and asked for proba tion, a nearing was set for July 7. At that time the much-married young woman told the court she had abducted a two-year-old child from a downtown store to represent to her Marine husband, just back from 27 months in the south Pacific as their own. Their own child, she said, died at birth and she did not have the heart to tell her husband. The FBI's investigation is to de termine whether allowance checks had been received in vio lation of the servicemen's de pendency act. Nathan said. TRAPPED BY FIRE Harlan, Ky., July 10U? Rescue crewa this afternoon brought 18 miners, shaken but alive, to the surface from a mine shaft of the Ridgway Darby Coal Co., 15 miles east of Harlan, where they had been trapped for nearly 17 hours by fire of undetermined origin. (CWT) after driving a new entrance to the shaft from an old air vent through more than 300 feet of dirt and coal, by-passing the fire which previously had hampered rescue efforts. D., July 1 (U.R) The contest for Republican nom ination for the U. S. senate re mained in doubt tonight although Sen. Gerald P. Nye, pre-war iso lationist, held an 844-vote lead over Lynn U. Stambaugh, for mer national commander of the American Legion. The doubt existed because be tween 10,000 and 12.000 absen tee ballots were mailed to North Dakotans in the armed services. The deadline for return of the service ballots Is July 17. Stambaugh has indicated he will ask for a recount should Nye's final lead be less than 1500 votes. Returns from all but 32 rural pyecincts of the total of 2251 gave Nye 38,699 and Stambaugh 37,855. PRIVATE KILLED BY FALLING TREE Pvt. Carey M. Wright, 30, of Lepanto. Ark., connected with the 796th Engineer Forestry Battalion, Camp White, died in the station hospital Friday night of a skull fracture he suffered in an accident at the battalion's Dead Indian creek bivouac area Tuesday. According to camp officials, Pvt. Wright was fatally hurt when a dead tree fell and struck him on the head while he was driving a bulldozer engaged in clearing a temporary roadway. The body will be shipped to Bonneville, Miss., for burial. His wife resides at 1107 East Main street, Medford. Portland, Ore., July 1 (U.R) Police today reported the arrest of two youths, ages 17 and 14, i who admitted they were the van ' dais who entered the Mount Tabor Presbyterian church here June 22, causing considerable damage. Neither of the boys had a pre vious record with police or juve nile authorities. They gave no reasons for their act. President Powley's statement continued: "Realizing not only the pro found importance, but also the full significance of the European Invasion, our organization, tuned as it is to the spirit of service, has Deen performing with its charac teristic earnestness and effort in these emergency days with that esprit de corps, efficiency and courtesy which accord with the' finest traditions of the service. "All telephone services direct ly essential to the war effort arc being Installed without delay. Al though the telephone demand for new services is somewhat less than a year ago, our backlog of unfilled applications which can not be cared for immediately be- cause of lack of facilities con tinues to increase. Faced with a shortage of facill ties and a record high volume of long distance traffic, we appro- ciate deeply the fine cooperation of the public in aiding us to keep the lines open for urgent war calls of and for the calls of serv ice men and women which are usually rjade between 7 p. m and 10 p. m., about the only per iod of the day in which they have an opportunity to make their calls. WAGE INCREASE Grants Pass, July 1 A de cision rendered by the West Coast Lumber Commission of the National War Labor Board on June 24, brings to a close a case involving the Grants Pass A. F. of L. Lumber and Sawmill Workers union and the Swede Basin Lumber Co., according to J. G. Wolf and R. R. Murray, Medford, union representatives. The case, involving wages, paid vacations and other condi tions of employment, was certi fied to the lumber commission in July, 1943, by the U. S. depart ment of labor, when the union and the company were unable to reach a mutually satisfactory settlement. The commission ordered that unless union or company files a petition for review, or it is other wise directed by the national board within 15 days, the Swede Basin Co. shall put into effect for its Grants Pass operations: A basic minimum wage of 90 cents per hour; a wage increase of 10 cents per hour to all em ployes in the bargaining unit in Job classifications above common labor; retroactive date for jvage Increases, June 27, 1943; union and company are directed t - ne gotiate further concerning other rates; the company shall grant a paid vacation on one week for the year 1943. In a meeting held here last Wednesday between union and company officials, it was agreed that neither party will file a petition for review of the. com mission's decision, and that the union will now submit to the company its suggestions for further rate changes, in line with the procedure outlined in the order. Also, negotiations on the union's request for extensive changes in the existing work'ng agreement will be resumtJ shortly, according to Wolf. Because of the perfect timing connected with both holdups as well as the fact that each has met with such lucrative success, police stated that they were conducting a thorough investi gation of the possibility that someone working for the stores is involved.
