NERVOUS EXHAUSTION AN I said the other day that there Is no scientific or physiologic foundation for the notion of com. p 1 e t e exhaus tion which is not completely relieved by a night's sleep or rest. If the in. disposition, dis ability or feel ing of exhaus t i o n remains not materially improved -b y such rest, then it Is good medi- Dt Brady cine and good sense to make or have made a thorough medical examination in an honest endeavor to find out what ails you. Please bear in mind mat i speak of exhaustion here in the physiological sense, not in the vague misleading sense In which "the term Is so effectively used by quack doctors and nostrum mongers. Physiology recognizes . only one kind of energy muscu lar, caloric and only one kind of fatigue or exhaustion. Assuming, as we must until physiology is proved wrong, that there is only one kind or exnaus tion, physical or muscular, and only one kind of fatigue, then we must conclude that ordinary sleep or rest is the remedy that completely refreshes and re stores the exhausted individual, generally In a day or less. Classic example of indigestion from nervousness is the complete arrest of all peristaltic or natural churning movements of stomach and intestine in an animal fright ened (say a cat suddenly con fronted by a dog), enraged or even iust irritated or annoyed by unaccustomed restrain or noise or subjected to pain.
