In Italy, wa received In Medford yesterday by the Misses Joiephlne and Jacquoue Kirtley, membera of the senior high school staff here, and Ed Kirtley, Fluhrer1 Bakery em ployee. The major was reported killed In action. Major Kirtley. an Infantry officer, was with the original force which landed in North Africa a year ago In No vember and had been on active dutv In that area ever since. The officer, a graduate of the University of Oregon, was com missioned In the regular army In 1938 and had planned an army career. He is survived by his wife, a son three years old and an eight-months-old daugh ter, who reside In Portland, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Kirtley of Eugene In addi tion to the brother and sisters here. Major Kirtley had visited in Medford many times and has a number of friends here. Miss Josephine Kirtley and her brother left Medford yestci day for Eugene and Portland upon receipt of the news. Adj. Charles K. Cox of the West Main USO housing bureau this morning again urged Medford residents and those of the surrounding area to list any available rooms with the bureau. At the time of the adjutant's telephone call this morning, 25 persons were at the desk hunting housing accommo dations. : Adj. Cox stated that guest houses at Camp White available to women, relatives of service men are both filled to capacity and that emergency measures must be taken to care for the persons arriving on every bus and train. MRS. HOPFER'S MOTHER KILLED IN EXPLOSION - Mrs. A. It. Hoofer, Jackson ville Star route, received word yesterday of the death earlier in the day of her mother, Mr. Tillie Jordan of San Diego. Mrs. Jordan's death resulted from an explosion of the gas main near her home. Funeral services are to be held Monday. Mrs. Jordan spent several months with her daughter and son-in-law In 1939 and will be remembered by many friends here. She is survived by two sons and another daughter. In addition to Mrs. Hopfer, and several grandchildren. PAPW0RTH FUNERAL TO BE 2 P. M. MONDAY Funeral service for William Robert Papworth, who passed away Wednesday near Phoenix, will be held Monday at 2 p. m. a', the Perl Funeral home. The Rev. W. A. In order to expedite the mail ing of Christmas packages, the oostofflce will remain open to 6 p. m. Saturday, an hour longer than usual, Postmaster Frank DeSouza said today. The postmaster said that re sponse by the public to the post office deoartment's plea for early mailing of Yuletide gifts had not been good and that, as a result, it looked like many packages would not reaoh their destination in time for Christ mas.
