"Many a night I saw the Pleiads Rising through the mellow shade, Glitter like swarm of fireflies Tangled in a silver braid." As the last of an Indian sum mer twilight fades into the Oc tober night, there faintly glows over the eastern horizon a tiny luminous cloud. A distant mys tery surrounds this nebulous patch of light. Closer attention shows it to be a compact cluster of little stars, arranged in the form of a very small dipper. Known to the most ancient writers, this group, the Pleiades (Plee-ya-deez), has been an In spiration through aU ages. An ancient Hebrew writer asked, "Canst thou bind the sweet in fluence of the Pleiades . . . T Wrote Milton, "Dawn and the Pleiades before him danced shedding sweet influence." Sisters In Mythology ' References to these stars are found in the writings of the an cient Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and Hindus. In mythology the Pleiades were seven sisters. Ju piter changed them Into doves and allowed them to fly away to the heavens where they have since remained. . When looked at indirectly the Pleiades give far more light than can be accounted for by the few naked-eye stars making up the group. The explanation Is clear when only slight optical aid is employed. These brighter stars are seen entangled among numerous fainter ones, many Just below unaided-eye visibil ity. Field glasses even opera glasses give very charming views of this beautiful group. When just high enough to clear the horizon-haze, they truly be come a "twinkling starry host,'' unexcelled by any other group In the sky. Soma Sea Seven Good eyes can often detect seven Pleiades, yet only six are seen by most observers. It is said that so excellent was the vision of Professor William Pick ering of Harvard that he could count 13. Dr. Lowell of Flag staff said he could see 16. It will be recalled that these two as tronomers announced seeing fin er telescopic details on the sur face of Mars than is possible through the eyes of most tele scope users. The Pleiades is a group of stars, actually as they seem to be in the same general locality out in the depths of space, and are not simply lined up from our point of observation. Lick observatory assigns them a dis tance ao great that the light which reaches us from them tonight started on its almost in conceivably long journey 800 years ago. Dust and Gas Hasa Long-time photographic ex posures on the Pleiades show some of the brighter stars so en gulfed In nebulosity' that they become lost in this haze. It is now thought that this is dust and gas in the neighborhood of the stars which in itself is non luminous. Spectroscopic analv sis shows it Is lighted by the neighboring stars. Rather early In the evening look for the shining sisters some what north of east. Each sue ceeding night they rise four min utes earlier.
