By Olive fninti Prntrrnm ' v ' Features Meeting' Musical Society A ' group of Chinese ' songs, English, American- and South American folk .songs were on the program of the Medfdrd Musical society given at '-the home of Mrs. John Boyle on South Oakdale Avenue Monday evening. A vocal trio composed of Mrs. Chester- Wendt, Mrs. Darrell F. Huson and Mrs.- Wil liam M. McAllister gave the Chinese group and the South American songs, Mrs. D. - B. Smith sang two groups of Eng lish selections and Mrs. Nellie Taylor presented American, pi ano numbers, with one preceded by a poem read by Miss Annette jf Gray. " The . program, was arranged by Mrs. ; Rawles Moore. .. Following the program a so cial hour was held and refresh ments served, with Miss Meryl Dawes and Mrs. O. A. Ewaldson pouring. . Assisting Mrs. Boyls were Mrs. Stella Hendrickson and Mrs.; W. Alex Kuehlthau. Hallowe'en Party At Service Club Wednesday Night : " A Hallowe'en party and dance is being planned for Service club No. 1 at Camp White next Wed nesday evening. The director states that it will be a "gingham gown" affair and that a fortune teller, fish, pond and a "chamber of horrors" will, be among the r traditional Hallowe'en features tra will play for dancing. . : A special invitation is being extended to all girls of the val ley to attend this special affair. It is stated that plans are being made by the special service of fice of Camp White in conjunc tion with the Rogue Valley Transit company to provide transportation home for girls at tending, with-routes established so that no young woman will have to' walk more than four blocks after leaving the bus. Those attending will assemble as usual at the old Chamber of Commerce building at 7:30 p. m. with the party to be from 8 p. m. until midnight. , Portland Couple Install Officers Of Local Orders 1 . ,v Floyd K. ' - .Appointive officers will be designated later. 4 Meeting Tonight Will Honor WAVE Miss Eldora Roberts, who is , leaving next week for Hunter college in New York City where she' will enter training in the WAVES, will be honored at a special meeting tonight in the Salvation Army hall. Fourth and Bartlett streets. Miss Rob erts has been active in Salva tion Army work for several years, , serving as girl guard f leader. ' Miss Roberts is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Roberts of this city.' Everyone inter ested is invited to attend the farewell meeting, which will be in - charge of , Major Nettie Brown. Red den and a cordial invitation is extended to members of the two lodges, their husbands and wives and guests. At the last meeting of the Rebekah lodge it was decided to participate in the Armistice day parade. An auction was held of "white elephant pack ages, with Ed Gould acting as auctioneer. Mrs. Cora White of Medford is a new initiate of the lodge and Mrs. Agnes Simpson of Casper, Wyo., and Mrs. Agnes Sullivan of Ashland were visitors. It was reported that during the recent war bond drive, sales in the Medford lodge were the second highest In this district. Plans have been formulated for the annual home-coming meeting of the Rebekah lodge which will be held the . third Monday of November and will, be preceded by a pot-luck sup per. Mrs. Marie Hanson and her committee served refreshments at the close of the meeting. Next regular session of the lodge will be November 7. ' I ' Wednesday Club Affair Tuesday To Be Farewell Mrs. T. W. Miles, who Is leav ing soon to make her home in California, will be honored at a farewell tea Tuesday after noon to be' given by members of the Wednesday Study club, of which Mrs. Miles is a mem ber. The affair is to be at the Girls' Community club at 2:30 o clock. , At the meeting of the -club held last Wednesday afternoon Mrs. R. B. Hammond reviewed "What America Means To Me' by Pearl Buck. This book is a collection of speeches and arti cles by the author supporting the ideal of freedom and equal ity of races. Mrs. J. G. Love reviewed "White Man's Folly by Vanya Oakes, which gives the experiences and political findings of the author, a jour nalist and newspaper writer, as the result of 10 years in the Far East. Mrs. Frank Albert, president, conducted the meeting. . : ' Reception Today At The MarKade Honors Rector . An Informal reception will be held today for the Rev. and Mrs. George R. Turney, recently arrived in Medford. The Rev. Turney is the new rector of St. Mark's Episcopal church and the reception will be . held at the MarKade - immediately follow ing the morning service at the church. Pouring at the reception will be Mrs. John Mann, Miss Anne Livington and Mrs. Robert Ebel. Assisting the general chairman. Mrs. Vera Strader, will be Mrs. V. J. Robinson, Mrs. Lucine G Miles, Mrs. D. M. Guile and Mrs. Oliver L. Williams. Today's affair, given by mem bers of the vestry and by the MarKade, is given in order that the new rector may meet the members of his. parish. University Women Hear Three Talks At Last Meeting Highlights of the recent con ference in Portland for chapter officers and state . department heads of American Association of University Women,-given by Mrs. a. M. cannon and Mrs. Justin Smith, and a highly In teresting talk by Lt. H. D. By- ington of tiie navy, featured the meeting of the Medford chaDter held Wednesday evening at Mrs. bmitn s home, 21 Geneva street. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Cannon reported that the conference program dealt with university standards during war time, the growth of the association, Juv enile delinquency, the war-time program of the association, eon' sumer problems and interna tional relations... The Oregon group now has 22 branches,' it was reported. The war-time program' in volves cooperation with the na tional League of Women Voters in furthering its program of' in' terest in post-war world prob lems. As state chairman of the department of international re lations, Mrs. Smith lead a round table discussion on the technique for adult study groups, with em phasis on war-time streamlining. Mrs. Cannon, president, pre sided at the meeting Wednesday which was attended by about 35 persons. '-4 Couple Honored By Corps Members ' At Housewarming Members of Chester A. Arthur corps Nol- 34, Women' Relief corps, gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Reinklng 540 Pennsylvania St., Thursday noon for a surprise pot-luck luncheon. The affair was in the nature of a housewarming. the Reinkings having recently moved to a new home. -During the lurheon the corps present ed Mr. and Mrs. Keinking wltn two large ornamental flower vases for their new home. Present for the luncheon were Mrs. Belle E. Littrell, Mrs. Etta M. Purkeypile, Mrs. Alice With erill, Mrs. Carrie E. Young, Mrs, Lillie Tucker, Mrs. Katherine Peterson, Mrs. Mary Degernes, Mrs. Freda Lawrence, Mrs. Ethyl Weed and Mr. and Mrs. Rein king. ... Following luncheon the corps members held the regular busi ness meeting at the armory. Duplicate Bridge Play Continues Miss1 Jane Carlton of Ashland and William Isaacs won top hon ors at the last meeting of the Medford Duplicate Bridge club at the Medford Hotel. Second were Tom Fuson and D. R. Wood and Mrs. A. F. Stennett and Dr, A. F. W. Kresse took third place. i Tournaments are held each Tuesday evening at the hotel, beginning at 7:45 o'clock. Wil liam Isaacs, president of the bridge club, states that service men and their wives and anyone else interested in playing dupli cate bridge are welcome to play in the tournaments. Everyone is asked to be at the hotel and seated by 7:45 p. m. . Couple Announce Daughter's Troth Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Hughes, Route 3, announce the engage ment of their, daughter, Betty Eldean, to Pfc. Ernest Squire?, No definite date has been set for the wedding. The Hughes family has resided in the valley for many years and Miss Hughes attended the Med ford schools. Pfc. Squires is sta tioned at Camp White with the a 1st Infantry division. He resid ed in Connecticut prior to going into the army. Thrift is always important, but doubly so in wartima. Trained nurses will be called to military service in increasing numbers. This means that ONE MEMBER OF EVERY SOUTHERN OREGON FAMILY should learn the fundamentals of nursing through HOME NURSING CLASSES to be organized SOON. A million women have already completed this course many more MUST do so if the health of the nation is sustained! O NURSES AIDES Women are asked to VOLUNTEER NOW for training that will enable them to serve at NURSES AIDES. The national goal it at least one out of every 500 retidents and that meant a minimum of ONE HUNDRED from Jackson County. We must be well prepared to meet emergencies HERE and every woman who can possibly serve as a NURSES AIDE should VOLUNTEER NOW! O ARMY -NAVY NURSES The Army surgeon general has called for 2,000 army and 500 navy nurses each month to meet the absolute needs of the armed forces. . There is no greater avenue of service than this for nurses today.
