MEDFORD - MAH.' TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, - OREGON, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1943 PAGE FIVE BANK ROBBERY OUTOFSTYLE Activities of FBI Make Ven tures Unhealthy 2 Kid nap Cases Yet Unsolved. - By Fr.d Mull.n (United Press Correspondent) Washington, Oct. 20. (U.R) Two formerly lucrative crimes kidnaping and bank robbery appeared today to be disap pearing from the American scene: . , The underworld apparently has found such ventures un wholesome since they were placed under the jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Investiga tion by the Lindbergh act of 1932 and the federal bank rob bery act of 1934. Major emphasis of the war time work of the 5,110 special agents under FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover is directed toward national security, but there has been no relaxation of the investi gation of other crimes. Two Kidnaps Unsolved Only two of the 256 kidnap ing cases investigated by the FBI since 1932 remain' un solved.' In one of these the kidnaping of Charles Fletcher Mattson on December 27, 1936, at Tacoma, Wash. more than 23.000 suspects have been elim- Navy Men Relax on South ' Pacific Island ' f ft I r . eft! Ransom was demanded, but not paid, in the kidnapings of little, Marc De Tristan in California in Septem ber, 1940, the Cash case in Flori da in May, 1938, and the Peter Levine case in New Rochelle, N. Y., In February, 1938. In the fiscal year ended June 30, there were 29 minor kidnap ings all solved. During the same 12 months, there were 47 kidnapings convictions with sen tences totaling 461 years, 10 months and three days. In none of these was a demand for ran som made. 1932 Robbery Peak Bank robberies reached their peak in 1932 when 608 banks were robbed of $4,503,331. Two years - later the national bank Ration Calendar robbery act was passed and the incidence of such cases had dropped 92 per cent during the last year. Last year there were only 48 bank robberies with loot totaling $194,476. Largely as a result of FBI activities, in surance rates in this field have been drastically reduced. ' During fiscal 1943, there were 92 bank robbery, burglary and larceny convictions with sen tences totaling 725 years, two months and 10 days. . We all know that I But there'i no getting around it wasting food has been a habit with most of us Americans. And the worst of it is, that when we waste this food, it isn't all we waste. We know how hard it was this summer to get all the help needed to pack these foods and how patriotically housewives who never before had worked in a cannery helped out, alongside our regular staff. We know the many train and truck miles it took to get these foods to your grocer and the hundreds of thousands of busy days put in by grocers just to make them available. Probably you are doing everything you know to prevent waste. But if you want to be sure if you want to plug every loophole check your own shop ping and eating habits against the questions below. -It's one simple way to do an even better job of winning America's battle on the food front "to be majl M ijowi jpl Ujto fa AJUL&Wl 1.
