Outstanding In tha new fun show are two striking dance routines by the two stars, two solo dances by Fred himself and fouf new hit tunes by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen. With Freddie Slack furnishing the music, Fred and Joan dance one of their more spectacular routines at a big service men's canteen, and the other in Benchlej's luxurious penthouse. Lending color in their roles of Flying Tiger pals in Astaire's "group, are Robert Ryan and Richard Davies, while Elizabeth Patterson, Marjorle Gatesson and Clarence Kolb have import ant supporting roles. Completing the program will be shown latest news events and selected short subjects. Brenda Joyce Has Lead Musical Hit '' On Rialto Screen Starting a three-day run at the Rialto is "Thumbs up- wnicn headlines a double feature pro aram of fun, muslo and rhythm. R,, Wolff, of Medford. Ore., emerged the winner. "Lieutenant Wolff was In a flight of Marine Corns Corsairs that saw about 20 Zeros attack ing a lone bomber. As he came to the rescue of the Liberator he met a Jap head-on. ' " -. I jired and he started to pull up,' Lt. Wolff said. Vinson today approved an hourly wage Increase of four cents for 300,000 operating rail way workers shortly after Presi dent Roosevelt created a new special emergency board to re consider year-old wage demands of 1,100,000 non-operating rail workers. The wage Increase approved by Vinson was recommended by an emergency board in a report submitted Sept. 25. It becomes effective Oct. 28. - Vinson's action and that of the president came as brotherhoods representing both groups of rail way workers were considering whether to take a strike vote among the . memberships. ' v FACE DISCHARGE Buenos Aires, Oct. 16 U.R) President Pedro Ramirez an nounced today that all public employes who signed a petition published in yesterday's news papers urging return of a demo cratic government and .a break with the Axis would be removed from their posts. The petition, signed by 190 leading Argentine citizens, ap peared in Friday's edition of the pro-democratic newspapers, La Prensa and La Nacion. Washington, Oct. 16 U,R1 Hollywood Star Ginger Rogers was one of the ten highest paid Americans in 1941, the treasury's annual blue ribbon salary list showed today. Miss Rogers was ninth on the list with income of $389,ouo. Louis B. Mayer led the nation with $949,766. On the basis of Dresent income taxes Mayer will have about $132,860 left. Of Miss Rogers' gross income, $215,- 000 came from Twentieth Century-Fox Films, Inc., and $140.- 000 from RKO-Radio Pictures, Inc. ... Ginger Rogers is a heavy tax payer in Jackson county, through ownership of a large ranch in the Eagle Point district. About 10,000 women are em ployed in U. S. petroleum re fineries. . ' PATERNITY CASE ASKS BABY BACK San Francisco, Oct. 16 (U.R) Mrs. Shirley Evans Hassau, 21- year-old platinum blonde who claims Errol Flynn Is the father of her child, tonight left her ho tel and was resting In seclusion following an all-night ride yes terday from Los Angeles. Later she denied rumors of a rift between herself' and her family, but her aunt Indicated, through an attorney, that she might institute legal proceedings to keep Harylyn for herself on charges the child was abandoned. "Since Shirley gave the babv to her aunt at five weeks, and the aunt has raised her, I think we can prove here in San Fran cisco the child was abandoned," Eli Freed, Mrs. Mullen's attor ney, anounced. In the meantime, the Office of Price Administration confiscated the gasoline ration book used for the car which brought Mrs. Hassau and her attorney up hero. The book belonged to William H. Young, general manager of the Mercury Engineering company or Los Angeles, who drove the pair 450 miles to San Francisco. Mrs. Hassau told reporters she was not only fond of her baby, but that she "loved her very much" and that "she's really . doll." She said she had been un able to care for the baby be cause she had been in ill health ever since Marylyn was born. Mrs. Hassau accused Flynn of plying her with rum and seduc ing her in his automobile.
