Lt. Raymond K. Wolff of Med-
ford,, who was cited last month
for having participated in two
strafing, missions In the south
west Pacific, has again ' made
news. A press release received
Saturday from the public rela
tions office of the Maj-ina Corps

Th release states:
"In a head-on duel with a Jap
Zero attacking an American Lib
erator bomber, First Lieutenant
R. R,, Wolff, of Medford. Ore.,
emerged the winner.
"Lieutenant Wolff was In a
flight of Marine Corns Corsairs
that saw about 20 Zeros attack
ing a lone bomber. As he came
to the rescue of the Liberator
he met a Jap head-on. ' " -.

ed him all the way up until he
burst into flames and pieces fell

"As he leveled off a Zero start

high school graduate , and at

Tex., he has been overseas since
February. of this year.- .

vegetables, and Glen Chase on
dairy cattle and marketing. Min
nie Flene, lecturer, reported on
her visits to three other Granges
while N up north, Evelyn Chris
tensen gave two accordion num
bers. Refreshments were seryed
by the Howes family and John
Gray. Next serving committee is
Lillie McKay and the Chaffee
family.

decided to hold the fall bazaar
November 13 at 8 p. m. to be foV
lowed by a dance. An all-day
meeting will be . held October
27 with pot-luck dinner and sew

Gold Hill Grange members
have purchased fiver $8100 worth
of war bonds, It was" reported
at the meeting October .7. It
was voted to pay the forty cents
additional dues commencing

The annual booster night pro
gram will be given at Grange
hall November 6. starting at 8
p. m. Each member is asked to
bring two prospective members.

Economic Stabilization Director
Fred M. Vinson today approved
an hourly wage Increase of four
cents for 300,000 operating rail
way workers shortly after Presi
dent Roosevelt created a new
special emergency board to re
consider year-old wage demands
of 1,100,000 non-operating rail
workers.
The wage Increase approved
by Vinson was recommended by
an emergency board in a report
submitted Sept. 25. It becomes
effective Oct. 28.
- Vinson's action and that of the
president came as brotherhoods
representing both groups of rail
way workers were considering
whether to take a strike vote
among the . memberships. ' v

Buenos Aires, Oct. 16 U.R)
President Pedro Ramirez an
nounced today that all public
employes who signed a petition
published in yesterday's news
papers urging return of a demo
cratic government and .a break
with the Axis would be removed
from their posts.
The petition, signed by 190
leading Argentine citizens, ap
peared in Friday's edition of the
pro-democratic newspapers, La
Prensa and La Nacion.
The order only affects some
eight or ten persons, it was
learned.

was one of the ten highest paid
Americans in 1941, the treasury's
annual blue ribbon salary list
showed today.
Miss Rogers was ninth on the
list with income of $389,ouo.
Louis B. Mayer led the nation
with $949,766. On the basis of
Dresent income taxes Mayer will
have about $132,860 left. Of
Miss Rogers' gross income, $215,-
000 came from Twentieth Century-Fox
Films, Inc., and $140.-
000 from RKO-Radio Pictures,
Inc. ...
Ginger Rogers is a heavy tax
payer in Jackson county, through
ownership of a large ranch in
the Eagle Point district.
About 10,000 women are em
ployed in U. S. petroleum re
fineries. . '

Mrs. Shirley Evans Hassau, 21-
year-old platinum blonde who
claims Errol Flynn Is the father
of her child, tonight left her ho
tel and was resting In seclusion
following an all-night ride yes
terday from Los Angeles.
Later she denied rumors of a
rift between herself' and her
family, but her aunt Indicated,
through an attorney, that she
might institute legal proceedings
to keep Harylyn for herself on
charges the child was abandoned.
"Since Shirley gave the babv
to her aunt at five weeks, and
the aunt has raised her, I think
we can prove here in San Fran
cisco the child was abandoned,"
Eli Freed, Mrs. Mullen's attor
ney, anounced.
In the meantime, the Office of
Price Administration confiscated
the gasoline ration book used for
the car which brought Mrs.
Hassau and her attorney up hero.
The book belonged to William H.
Young, general manager of the
Mercury Engineering company
or Los Angeles, who drove the
pair 450 miles to San Francisco.
Mrs. Hassau told reporters she
was not only fond of her baby,
but that she "loved her very
much" and that "she's really .
doll." She said she had been un
able to care for the baby be
cause she had been in ill health
ever since Marylyn was born.
Mrs. Hassau accused Flynn of
plying her with rum and seduc
ing her in his automobile.

today that the forest fire raging
