The per-box fee is tenia tively tet each season by the bureau's advertising committee, later approved by the executive committee when final crop esti mates have been completed. New sign-ups for the current season approximate more than 200,000 boxes of fruit, giving the bureau an enlarged fund with which to further trade edu cation to the necessity and value of scientific winter pear "condi tioning" before retail display and sale. These new memberships carry more than a usual signifi cance in a short-crop year that also sees the highest national consumer buying power on record. Seventh and eighth grade girls glee club presented two enjoyable musical numbers. Mrs. C. W. Anhorn presided in the absence of Mrs. John Bohnert, and presented Mrs. Loyd Morris, who led in group singing. Mrs. William Foley was then intro duced and spoke on recreation in the home. She pointed out the urgent necessity of provid ing more home interests and reminded parents that their own choice of reading material and music has much influence on the type the child will select for himself. Membership week was an nounced for Oct. 17 to 24. A report on the Jackson County council meeting held in Medford Sept. 15 was given by Mrs, Anhorn. It was voted to suspend the by-laws for a year to allow dues to be raised from 35c to 50c, which would simplify financial problems. An invitation to the parent teacher get acquainted party Oct. 8 was extended to all Barents and friends. Fifth grade mothers served refreshments at the close. Announcement was made to day oy r lunrer .Daiterrcs uiruugu , A. M. Cannon, manager, that new and higher standards of enrichment of white breads and rolls, approved by the United States Food administration and for which necessary ingredients have only recently been made available for civilian use, are now being incorporated at no added price throughout this area in all such products of their manufacture. The new enrichment stand ards mark a milestone in mass nutrition history, in that they go beyond the original purpose of the government s program, which was to restore certain vitamins and minerals lost in the milling of white flour, and now actually incorporate sub stantial amounts of certain of these food substances in excess of the original content of the whole grain. Principal added ingredient under the new recommendations of which Fluhrer's announce their whole-hearted support, is riboflavin, pr vitamin B2, which promotes skin health, bodily growth and the consumption of oxygen by the body cells. Also increased in white bread are the vitamins thiamin (Bl) and nia- Lcin, as well as assimuapie min eral iron. White bread has been selected as the ideal carrier because of its cheapness and universal daily consumption it comprises with other flour made foods 25 per cent of our American diet, and the fact that it supplies the very nutrients which the vitamins help the body to utilize, as well as helping to offset vitamin mineral .deficiencies elsewhere in the diet. The diet of both The Ameri can soldier and the American public will thus be fortified to match successfully the whole grain diets of the Russian citizen and soldier and the Nazi soldier.
