The luncheon has been scheduled for 1 o'clock and members are asked to assemble in the hotel lounge. One of the oldest women's clubs in the Rogue river valley, the Wednesday club still retains In its roster five charter mem bers. They are Mrs. F. K. Deuel, Mrs. E. B. Picket, Mrs. H. E. Snedicor, Mrs. E. N. Warner and Mrs. H. G. Wort man. Presiding over the meeting this week will be the new pre sident, Mrs. Frank Albert, who succeeds Mrs. A. W. Aya, retir ing president. Mrs. J. W. Jacobs is the new vice-president, replacing Miss Helen Bui lis, and the secretary this year will be Mrs. O. H. Brenneman, who replaces Mrs. Frank Albert. Mrs. W. J. Warner retains the treasurership. The committee arranging the luncheon is Mrs. F. E. Nichols, chairman, assisted by Miss Helen Bull Is, Mrs. Dolph Phipps and Mrs. R. B. Hammond. Membership in the club Is limited each year to 30 mem bers. Surprise Shower Tuesday Evening Honors Mrs. Howe Mrs. Roy Howe, the former The! ma Heard, was honored Tuesday evening with a sur prise shower given by a group of friends at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heard on the South Pacific highway. Swinson Coshie Wedding Rites Announced Here News of the wedding of Mrs. Marie Swinson, Napa, Calif., former Medford resident, is of much interest to friends and relatives in the city. Mrs. Swin son and George Cosble of Berke ley were married Sunday, Sept. 26, in Berkeley at St. John's Presbyterian church. The service was read by Dr. Stanley Armstrong Hunter and was attended only by the bride's daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard T. Wilson of Napa, Calif., and her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Eldridge of Medford. Mrs Swinson wore an ensemble of black and white with silver fox furs for the ceremony. Her flow- ers were white orchids. The wedding of Mrs. Cosble s daughter, the former Barbaia Leigh Swinson, preceded that of her mother by only a week. Mr. and Mrs. Cosbie will re side In Berkeley. BURELSON'S THE MEN IN Creek Sororities On Eugene Campus Announce Pledges With the end of formal "rush ing" Wednesday on the Univer sity of Oregon campus at Eugene by national Greek letter sorori ties, the names of eight Medford co-eds were announced as pledges. Informal rushing contin ues throughout the year and ad ditional pledges are announced from time to time. Pledged to Alpha Delta Pi were Miss Ann Scripter, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Scrip ter, 60 Rose avenue, and Miss uetty Hose, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Rose, 358 South Oak dale avenue. Three Medford girls pledged Alpha Phi, the three being the Misses Dorothy and Virginia Hayes, daughters of Dr. and Mrs. James C. Lady Elks Plan First Meeting ' Another women's organization wnicn resumes its fall nroeram of activities this coming week is the Medford Lady Elks. The first meeting has been set for Tues day afternoon, October 9, at the temple. Dessert will be served at two o'clock and will be followed Dy Dridge, other card games or any game in which the members are interested. Mrs. Melvin Plaskett, chair man of the group this year, states that women should make up tables for cards or other games in advance. Wives of all members of the local 'Elks club are welcome to attend and the chairman hopes that the first meeting will be well attended. Advance reservations are not necessary. The committee in charge was composed of the officers of Reames chapter of O.E.S., with Mrs. A. W. Denney as chairman. Lunch was served from tables centered with bowls of fall fruits and vegetables. After luncheon, each one present read a verse attached to the favors. At cards Mrs. George W. Nell son, president of Electa club, was awarded the pinochle prize, Mrs. Fred Purdin first, and Mrs. Josephine Clark, second bridge prizes. Mrs. Edith Olsen was also awarded a prize and Miss Ann Detweiler received a gift for being the farthest' from her home chapter. - Mrs. Maude Swan of Paonia. Colo., Mrs. Lorena Simmons of Oakland, Calif., were among those present, as well as Mrs. Elton Waldron, worthy matron of Adarel chapter of Jackson ville and Mrs. Lilly Holt, worthy matron of Nevita chapter, Cen tral Point. During the afternoon a pro gram of vocal numbers was given by Mrs. Elsie Carlton Strang, accompanied by Mrs. O. C. Failing, who is a member of the Yreka chapter. ' .' . Christening Rites . For Emmens Infant Sunday At Church . James Jocelyn Emmens, nine- months-old son of Capt. and Mrj T. H. Emmens, was christened at a service at St. Mark's Episco pal church- last Sunday. The service was performed by the Rev. Francis Ball, rector of Grants Pass Episcopal church.. Godmother for the Infant was Mrs. Russell D. Davis and god fathers were Charles Clay, Jr., Medford, and Dr. Jack Guless of Portland. In the absence of Dr. Guless, John Day of Medford acted as proxy godfather. The chads father was not present for the service since he is stationed in North Africa with the U. S. army medical corps. Young James is the grandson of Mrs. J. J. Emmens, 1443 East Main St., and Mr. and Mrs. Wal ter Inch, 602 Catherine St. Mrs. Emmens and her son are making their home with Mr. and Mrs, Inch during the absence of Capt. Emmens. 1 Zonta Clubs Plan District Meeting Plans for attending a district convention of Zonta clubs were made at the meeting of the Med ford club held Monday at the Girls' Community club. The con ference is to be held in Eugene. Oct. 16 and 17, and is to be at tended by a large group from here. A guest of the club was Miss Hazel Cook of Portland. Miss Cook is president of the Portland club. Hostesses for the luncheon meeting were Mrs. Effie Kurtz and Mrs. Katherlne Satterlee. Gilstrap, 35 Geneva St. The luncheon will be at 1 o clock and hostesses for the afternoon will be Mrs. Gilstrap and retir ing and incoming officers. Retiring officers are Mrs. Stanley E. Phillip, nresident. Mrs. Melvin R. Plaskett, vice- president and Mrs. Martin Sands, secretary-treasurer. Second Meeting Of Garden Club To Be Thursday TWrs. W. C. Rookard, Mrs. Martin Heitkamp and Mrs. D. R. Wood will be on the program for the second meeting of the Medford Garden club which will be held Thursday afternoon of this week at the Girls' Com. munity club on North Bartlett avenue. The meeting will be at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Rookard win talk on conservation of fruit, Mrs. Heit kamp will exhibit tuberous be gonias and will give a talk on their history. Mrs.' Wood will present the club's usual feature of a 10-minute talk on horticul ture. Mrs. O. H. Brenneman Is In charge of entertainment for the afternoon. All Garden club members are urged to attend and others in terested in flowers and desiring to Join the group are invited. Miss Gaddis Leaves For Oregon College , Miss Dorothy Gaddis left Fri day night for Corvallis, where sne will enroll for her senior year in home economics at Ore gon State college. She was ao- companied north by her mother, Mrs. Earl Gaddis, who continued on to Portland where 'she will stay for the coming month to transact business. The Gaddis family resides at 609 East Main street. Miis Vera Humphrey To Address Council The P.T.A. city council will meet Tuesday at 1 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Howard Calburn, 705 W. Miss Cox is a mem ber of Elta Deuel Hubbs tent of Medford. The new national officer has a background of many years membership in the organization and has held local, state and national offices. She was at one time president of the Oregon state group and has been nation al chaplain, national color bear er and was then junior and senior vice-president, serving in the latter office last year. Miss Cox is principal of the Lincoln school in the city and has taught here for many years. In recognition of her election to the national office, Miss Cox will be honored with a formal reception which is now being planned by members of the Medford tent, members of Julia Dent Grant tent of Grants Pass and of Mother Bickerdyke tent in Ashland.. This afternoon Miss Cox is meeting with the Past Presi dents of Elta Deuel Hubbs tent which is being entertained for dessert luncheon at the home of Mrs. W. C. Kindred, 421 N. Riverside avenue. , Chapter Holds First Meeting . At Young Home Crater Lake chanter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its first fall meeting Saturday, September 25, Mrs. Thomas Young had ex tended the hospitality of her country home on Route 1 to the chapter members who enjoyed the view of mountains and the valley from the hill-top site. Miss Jane Snedicor and Mrs H. D. Byington were assistant hostesses, and in the absence of Mrs. Byington, Mrs. Frances Flynn and Miss Peggy Young, the hostess' daughter, assisted. A business meeting was. pre sided over by the regent,- Mrs. T. J. Gifford, and was followed by a program of piano numbers. Guests were Mrs. Lorena Du- Puy of Los Angeles, Calif., house guest of the hostess, Miss Lillian Searles of Jollet, I1L, sister and guest of Mrs. H. W. F. Spilver, and Mrs. Flinn. The afternoon closed with the serving of refreshments. Pocahontas Lodge Plans : Soldier Entertainment -. Members of the Pocahontas lodge will entertain, a group of Camp White soldiers Wednesday evening at the Redman nail. Fourth and Apple streets. The program will start at 8 p. m., with refreshments to follow. All members are asked to brtns sandwiches. The banquet has been scheduled for 6:30 o'clock in the church parlors and will be a covered dish affair. The autumn theme will be carried out m decora tions and table appointments. Portland Zontian Is Honored Guest Thursday Evening Miss Hazel Cook. Portland. was honor1 guest at an evening party Thursday given by Mrs. Mabel Conger at her home on West Main street. Miss Cook Is president of the Portland Zonta club and members of the Med ford club were invited to meet her. Miss Cook has been in Med ford demonstrating the "mirror telephone" for the Pacific.
