CHINESE HERBS Dean Chagrined Over Failure To Past Army Test St Louis, Sept 29 (U.R) Dizzy Dean, the former Card inal pitching star who turned sportscaster, was disappoint ed today because the army re jected him for military serv ice. He was turned down by Jefferson Barracks physicians because of perforated ear drum. "They made a tremendous boner," Dean aald. "If they had only taken me in, this here war would be over in less time than I ever spent listening to a speech by Branch Rickey." George Woods pitched and batted the Boston Red Sox to a 6-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. The Athletics ended their sea son with St. Louis by tripping the Browns, 8-3. That's Gearge Munger, Penn's football master-mind, named today as the United Press eoacn-oi-ine-weex. Effervescent as his yeastlest youngster, Munger wa 84 last Friday. And his red and blue eleven gave him the best pres ent me following afternoon by defeating a favored Princeton team 47-9. Penn football was In the doldrums at the end of the 1937 campaign. The team had won only two of eight games and, in desperation, Munger was boost ed upstairs from supervisor of freshman athletics. Big George had been one of Penn's outstanding athU-tes in his under-graduate days. He was a halfback on the grid team and a member of the track team, winning the tough Decathlon championship In the annual Penn relay carnival during his Junior year in 1931. Following graduation, the redhaired, bespectacled Munger was appointed freshman foot ball coach at his alma mater for 1933. He then moved to Epis copal Academy, where he had been the school's greatest athlete in prep school days, as football and track coach. Munger served there three years before return ing to Penn In 1036 as supervisor of freshman athletics. Two years later he took over as head foot ball coach and the Quakers have been a potent factor In the Ivy league ever since. In five seasons his clubs have won 23 games against 11 losses and five ties. And during that time they have rolled up 754 points compared with 362 for the opposition. His 1940 and '41 teams were his best. The former won six, lost one and tied one, scoring 247 points against 79 for its eight opponents. In 1941 the red and blue won seven and dropped only one, scoring 180 points against S3. The treasury department at Washington is Investigating pos sibilities of such a transfer. ' If last night's report from treasury representatives In New York over the teletype to Wash ington was favorable, treasury officials will confer today or to morrow with war department heads regarding the change. Friday night, between halves of the Black Tornado-Marshfield high gridiron clash at the sta dium the football used by the two elevens will be awarded to the person purchasing the larg est amount of War Bonds. The tale will be in the form of an auction, with the highest bidder buying a bond or bonds in the amount of the bid and re ceiving, after the game or Sat urday, the pigskin. The football will be cleaned off after the game and then au tographed by all players and coaches of both teams, and by the game officials. Also to be auctioned off at half time, are two pairs of re served seat season tickets good for Medford highs remaining home games. The two highest bond bidders will each receive a Dair of choice season reserved seats. Order of the M is spon soring the auction. The game will mark the final home appearances of the tor nado for three weeks, and may prove one of the toughest of the campaign.. Marshfield was un defeated last season and claimed, along with the Klamath Falls Pelicans, the state champion ship. The Pirates defeated Med ford, 13 to 0. ' .
