D. Green, and his son, Ralph, and other rela- tlves here. Ensign Green's ship was en- gaged in making trips between this country and the Aleutians prior to and during the battle of Attu and he saw the original diary shortly after it was taken from the body of the Japanese officer. The document was trans lated by a Japanese interpreter in the services of this country, and copies were made. Begun May 12 The diary was begun May 12, and Ensign Green points out that the battle of Attu began May 11. The diary, evidently left for Americans to find, carries passages of palpable pro paganda. Sections of the diary read: May 12 Carrier based planes flew over. Fired at them. A low fog and suirimlt clear. Evacuated to the summit. Air raids carried out frequently. Prepared battle equipment. American transports about 41 In number began landing at Hakkal Misakl. Twenty boats landed at Massacre Bay. It seems that they are going to unload heavy equipment. May 13 Battle. The U. S. forces landed at Shiba Dal and Massacre Bay. Massacre Bay Is defended by only one platoon and upon the unexpected attack, the A.A. machine gun cannon was destroyed and we have with drawn. May 14 Battle. Our two suV marines from Klska assisting us, have greatly damaged two enemy ships. Continuous flow of wounded In the field hospital. Enemy strength must be a division. Our desperate defense ! holding up well. Many Casualties . May 18 Battle. Continuous flow of casualties. The enemy has a great number of negroes and Indians, Just lay down from fatigue in the barracks. Facial expressions of soldiers back 1 from West Arm are tense. May 16 Battle. If Shltagate Dal is occupied by the enemy, the fate of the east army Is de cided, so burnt documents. Am prepared to destroy the patients. Have been ordered to Chlchagof Harbor In the morning. Is severe and has said his last words to his officers and N.C.O.'s that he will die tomorrow. Gavs all his articles away. Hasty chap, this fellow. Everyone who heard this became desperate and things became disorderly. Cruiser Destroyed May 22 Battle. Seventeen friendly medium bombers des troyed a cruiser off shore. A hit was scored on the pillar pole of the tent for patients and the tent gave in and two died in stantly. Day's ration 1 to S shakers (1-1 Vi lbs.). Nothing more. Officers and men alike. Everybody looked around for food and stole everything they could find. May 24 Battle. It sleeted and was extremely cold. A great amount of .shells dropped by naval fire. May 25 Battle. Naval gun fire, aerial bombardment, trench warfare. The worst Is yet to come. - ' May 28 Battle. It felt like the Mlssuml barracks blew up and things' lit up tremendously. Consciousness becomes vague. One tent burnt down. Strafing planes hit the next room. My room is an awful mess from the sand and pebbles. There was a ceremony to grant the imperial Edict. Last line of unanose brok-; en through. No hope' for rein forcements, win die for the cause of Imperial Edict May 27-r-Straflng by planes. There are less than 1,000 left of more than 2,000 troops. Two Days Food May 28 Battle. The remain ing ration Is only for two days. Our artillery has been complete ly destroyed. The company on the bottom of Attu Fuji has been completely annihilated except one. Com. Yenegami is still hold ing Unanose. Continuous cases I of suicide. Half of sector unit has , been blown away. Heard that they gave 400 shots of morphine to seriously wounded and killed ! them. Ate half a fried thistle. It is the first time I have eaten something fresh In six months.
