Completes Training Donald Elmer Herried has completed bis primary training at the naval air station at Dallas, Tex., and nas been ordered to report at the station at Pensacola, Fla. Minor Fires Three fires re ported yesterday and today to the local fire department were extinguished without damage to property, according to a report an ma at we lire station. At a B. m. Sunday an overheated oil stove at 618 S. Holly street was reported. At 11:05 a. m. today a small grass fire on Murray atreet was extinguished and at 11:40 a. m. today an overheated etove at the home of W. D. The course lasts about five months and upon its completion the young man will be classified as a pilot, navi gator or bombardier and sent to a school for further training, e e Merrlman Graduated Pfc. Lee Merriman, son of Dr. J. H. Mallory of Trail, has completed training and has been graduated from the army air forces tech nical training command school at Chanute Field, 111., according to a press release from the field. While attending the school he received instruction In the weather observers course, and in various operations relative to the maintenance of fighting planes. - Training Finished Pvt. Mabel L. Sherwood of 1015 West 12th street has completed her basic training at the First Wo men s Army Corps training cen ter at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, and has been selected for spe cialist training in the motor transport school, according to a press release from the center Pvt. Sherwood will receive ad ditional training in a specialized field preparatory to taking over an important behlnd-the-lines army job, releasing a soldier for combat duty. Good Health Is a Weapon' Is the .theme of an intensive edu cational program being launched in every town and community this week by the Oregon State Board of Health In cooperation witn the Oregon state Defense Council, according to an an nouncement by Dr. Frederick D. Strieker, stats health officer. Commenting on the campaign Dr. Strieker said, "all communi ties have suffered great losses In available medical and dental professionals as well as nurses and technicians from hospital staffs. For this reason It is more Important now than at any time since the "flu" epidemic of World war I, that every pos sible precaution be taken against the outbreak of communicable and contagious diseases in this fast growing northwest area." To illustrate the urgency of the public's cooperation in the health program the state health officer brought out the fact that one-third of the doctors in Ore gon have been called into serv ice and in contrast to that, the population of Oregon has been increased by over 100,000 peo ple according to newly com puted tabulations made irom tne issuing of ration book no. z. Dr. Strieker pointed out that the present educational program In Oregon is concentrated in the following 12 points. 1. Protect children and adults against communicable diseases by immunization especially against diphtheria and smallpox. 2. Keep children away from all sick persons. 4. Maintain sanitary condi tions In your home, block and community. Report rats and mosquitoes to your local health department. 5. Eat the right foods. Con serve food values by proper storage and cooking. 6. Keep cheerful and busy. Don't forget to play. 7. wear, proper clothing ana maintain room temperature at 85 degrees. 8. Expectant mothers should seek medical care early. The health of the mother and baby depends on proper care. 9. When 111, get a competent physician s advice early. 10. Give yourself, a chance, Children and adults should have periodic physical examinations by a competent physician and dentist. Any evidence of illness should receive immediate atten tion. 11. Know and practice good home nursing care. 12. Call upon your local health department for help in protecting the health ot those living in your block. Through cooperation of coun ty civil defense officials and school authorities pamphlets carrying the 12-point message are being distributed to all school pupils with the request that they be taken home tor con sideration of parents. More de tailed information about the points may be obtained through block leaders at the chamber of commerce or from the state or local health departments. WILSON, long time resident of this vicinity, passed away in a local hospital early this morning at the age of 73. He was born near Des Moines. Iowa, Sept 2, 1870. When a small boy he came west and for a few years, resided at Willa mina, Tillamook county, Oregon. Fifty years ago he came to Jackson county and settled in the Griffin creek district where he followed farming. There are left three children, Harry A. Wilson of Medford; Helen Chlldreth and Vera Hay den of Portland. Also one broth er and two sisters, Miss Rosetta Wilson, Portland; Mrs. Belle Booth, Willamina, and Henry H. Wilson of Otis, Oregon. Three grandchildren, Mary and Anneta Childreth of Port land and Mary Wilson now in the WAVES. Funeral services' will be held In the Conger chapel at 2:30 Tuesday with the Rev. Wolford A. Dawes officiating. Interment will be In Siskiyou memorial park. MRS. ELIZABETH OLSON, wife of Olof Olson on the Old Stage Road, passed away In a local hospital Saturday at the age of 65. She had been 111 but a short time. Born in Sweden, she came to the United States at the age of 25. For the past 25 years she had made her home In this commu nity. Besides her husband she leaves a son, Olof Elmer Olson, U. S. army, stationed in Alaska There are also two sisters in Sweden. Date and time of the service will be announced later by Con ger r unerai rariors. WILLIAM HARVEY BIRCH, a resident of the Applegate, passed away Saturday at a local hospi tal. Mr. Birch was born in Greenup county. Kentucky. Jan lu, leal. He came to the Apple- gate district in 1933. He was a miner by trade. Mr. Birch was married to Alice . Willis in 1880. Eleven children were born to the union. He is survived by one son, Frank Birch of Medford, four daugh ters, Mrs. L. C. Noel. Denver. Colo.: Mrs. Ira Ashlev.
