"We appeal to military (leaders, army generals and officers. Germany expects you to face the truth squarely and act Immediately. Do all that is neces sary,, otherwise it will be done without you and possibly against you. The Nazi regime is incapable of taking the sole path' leading to peace. Demand Hitler's abdication, long live a free peaceful and in dependent Germany!" This is in sharp contrast to the Anglo-American appeal which declares not must be crushed but the through these prisoners, even promises the retention of a German army. For Instance, man who leaves home In the morning with that sense of good cheer and well being one gets from a cup or two of good coffee is less likely to resort to a quick one on his way to work or to have a nip from a pocket flask after the day's work is under way, than is the poor geek who gets onlv a cup or two of hell broth which la served under the name of coffee. One under the beneficient In fluence of good coffee can hard ly feel the need of alcoholic liquor of any kind to "cheer him up" or "make him feel better '. By "good" and "bad" coffee I mean, not the brand vf coffee, but the way the coffee is brewed. Well made coffee promotes good cheer, well being and con tentment, makes people less orn ery to live with. Poorly made coffee is boiled coffee enough to drive a good man to beating his wife. Here s how to make good cof fee and keep your man purring. t. Purchase coffee In smai: quantities so that it will be consumed soon after roasting. 2. If is in the bean, grind only enough for the brew each time; if it is ready ground, keep it in tightly sealed con tainer. 3. ' See that pot, percolator or whatever gadget you use to make coffee is thoroughly clean. A mere trace of previ ous brew tends to impair the flavor of the present brew. Add a little cold water to the quantity of coffee you use for the brew. Let it stand at least fifteen minutes cold- no harm if it stands cold over night. The cold water ex tracts and holds the aroma or flavor well. When you are nearly ready to serve, heat the coffee up near- Barber Observations Many wartime regulations which our men find so painful are not so to us women since they've long been a part of our everyday pattern of living. For instance, our men are prone to grumble now that certain foods to which they are partial are de nied them. But their wives for got their own food preferences shortly after the wedding cere mony. Maybe she'd always been fond of codfish, but once she married, and found that John disliked codfish, it was never served again. There's one thing though. I've never yet met the man who put a floor on the prices he fixed for the little lady in his home. He never says 'Now don't pay less than $10 for your hat this spring," or orders, "The grocery bill mustn't go under $40 this month." A ceiling fixer, yes; but a floor fixer, no. Then every so often our men have upped our production quota witnout altering their own in the least. Suddenly we find our selves with an extra batch of baby clothes to wash, and an other bed to make. And while the proud father still goes to work at the same time. Mother finds she can no longer keep union nours. we women see no injustice In this, and have even been known to name the litUe dear after the man who's at least partly responsible for our increased work; and this with out increased pay, too. So it's no wonder women look amazed when their men com plain at demands for increased production and longer work hours. It seems they aren't as tough as they've led us to be lieve they were. LICENSE PLATES Salem, Ore., Sept. 20. (U.R) About 40,000 new 1S42 Oregon vehicle license plates have been issued workers who have enter ed the state to man Its shipyards and other defense industries, it was revealed today. The highest number of any license plate issued In Oregon in 1942 was 389-142. Oregon car owners now hold plates with numbers as high as 417-001. A new shipment of license plates to the office of the sec retary of state had numbers from 417-001 to 435-000. Because only a few thousand license plates have been issued to new car owners and because all other car owners have re tained their 1942 license plates, license Issuers estimate that al most all of the 40,000 new plates were recorded for cars formerly registered in other states. U.S. NAVY POWER 14,172 Vessels and 18,269 Planes Make Strategy of Attack Feasible, Is Boast. By Sandor 8. Klein United Press Staff Correspondent Washington, Sept. 20 MM The navy department, announc ing with unconcealed pride that the U. S. navy has expanded in to the greatest sea and air power in history, served notice on the Axis today that American naval strategy Is now "strategy of attack." I American naval' strength, as revealed in the navy's announce ment, now stands at the all- time high of 14,172 vessels 613 of them fighting ships and 18, 269 planes. Power shown Ability to build this huge force and to keep building at the pres ent rate, the navy said, underlies all American military strategy and "makes feasible a strategy of attack with all the risk it im plies." The navy s tremendous hitting power and present attack strat egy were demonstrated in the week end attacks on Nauru and Tarawa islands in the Gilbert group and on Marcus island September 1, attacks which showed that the navy Is now able to strike deep into enemy territory and is willing to do so. However, the navy made no bones about the size of the job ahead. While describing its fleet as "the mightiest In history," its air force as "the most powerful air force in the world," it added pointedly: Faca Huge Task 'Its size is dwarfed only by the size of the task which con fronts it." The impressive force was built largely in three years of growth since June, 1940, when the na val expansion program began and is still growing at a tremen dous rate. In July, 1943, there were $3 200,000,000 worth Of new ships still in tne construction stage. foreshadowing a vast new addi tion to the already unorecedent- ed naval force, the navy said. Tne greatest bulk of this huae fleet and air force, the navy pointed cut, was built during the past three years ."in. the midst of war." It described the acceleration of ship and plane building as -wunout parallel." The number of ships delivered In June. 1943. was almost 240 times the number completed in July, 1940. The number of planes deliv ered was bo times the earlier figure. IN BUS MISHAP Johnston City, 111., Sept 20. (UP Officials believed today that -faulty brakes may have caused a crowded Greyhound bus to strike a two-coach train at a grade crossing near here. killing seven persons and injur ing more than 50. All the dead and most of the Injured were passengers on the bus which was en route from Memphis, Term.,- to Chicago. The brakes of the bus appar ently failed on a down-grade and it coasted into the crossing and struck the train, which was carrying three passengers and its crew. The train's gasoline-powered engine was overturned and the front of the bus was demol ished. I really can't re call having heard much else worth while. Second Is the water depart ment.
