OREGON, SUNDAY, JANUARY 3, 1943 Couple United In St. James Cathedral Rite St. James Cathedral In Balti more, Md., was the scene Mon day, Dec 14 of the wedding of Miss Jeanette Field, daughter of Mi. and Mrs. Harvey Field of 21 Crater Lake avenue of this city to First Lieut. Marvin F. Burk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd F. Burk of 32 Rose avenue. The ceremony was read by the Rev. Mr. Mallett. The couple was attended by Mr. and Mrs. B. E. West, Mr. West being a former room-mate of Lieut. Burk. For the cere mony the bride was attired In a tailored wool cocoa brown suit with smart fur trimmed halo matching hat and brown acces sories. Her corsage was of lady slipper orchids. Following the ceremony a wedding supper was served. Both are former Medford resi dents, having graduated from Medford high school. Mrs. Burk attended College of Pacific at btockton, Cal where she was active in dramatics and musical activities. She later attended and graduated from University of Oregon where she was a mem ber of Chi Omega social soror ity. Lieut. Burk after graduation from Medford high school grad uated from the Woodborry col lege at Los Angeles and entered the service. He received his early training at Ontario, Cal.. the School of Armaments at Lowry Field in Denver, Colo. Lieut Burk and Mrs. Burk will make their home . at the Empire Apts., 20th and F street In Washington, D. C, where he Is stationed with the U. S. army air corps at Boiling Field. 1 Mr. and Mrs. Field accompan ied their daughter to San Fran Cisco, Cal., prior to her depart-v-e tor the east. Local Couple . Observe 50th . Anniversary " Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jarmln, well-known Medford residents, observed their 50th wedding an niversary last Sunday at their home, 814 Sherman street. Twp sons, Marc and Merle were pres ent with their families and the reunion was complete except for the absence of their young est son, Marion, employed in San Francisco and their grand . son, Sgt. Lyle Jarmin, son of 1 Mr. and Mrs. Merle Jarmin, now stationed in the east. The couple was married n Osceola, Neb., Dec. 27, 1892 and they came to Medford in 1925 nd have been In business here aince that time. Congratulations were extend ed to Mr. anj Mrs. Jarmin by about 40 friends and neighbors who called during the afternoon. The tea table was centered with an arrangement of pink rose buds, yellow chrysanthemums and gold tapers. Mrs. Merle Jar min and Mrs. Eljie Mowbry served. Many gifts were re ceived. Thelma Kaplon's Betrothal Told Mr. and Mrs. Hum v.ni- announce the engagement of their dauehter- Theim c k geant Sanford Cohen, son of Mr. 'and Mrs. Julius H. Cohen of rmslield, Mass. Betrothal Of Janet Mann Told at Tea . Mr. and Mrs. John C. Mann announced the betrothal of their daughter,. Miss Janet, to Lieut. John G. Crawford of Camp White, son of Mrs. J. C. Craw ford of Newark, N. J., at a tea held Wednesday afternoon be tween the hours of 3 and 8 o'clock at the Mann residence, 815 East Main street. Assisting during the afternoon about the rooms were Mrs. John Moffet, Miss Betty Vilm and Miss Patricia Thompson. The wedding will be an event of the near future. Lieut. Craw ford Is stationed at Camp White with 91st divisional headquar ters. Gates Observe SOth Anniversary At Son's Home A reception Monday evening honored Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Gates, prominent Medford cou pie, who celebrated their gold en wedding anniversary that day. The affair was at the home of their son, George Gates, 830 Minnesota avenue, with Mr. and Mrs. Gates and Mr. and Mrs. A. Z. Dean as hosts. Mrs. Dean Is a dauehter of the Gates. About 85 people called during the evening to extend their con gratulations to the couple. Re freshments were served from a large table centered with gold colored miniature chrysanthe mums and gold tapers. Pouring the first part of the evening were Mrs. Roland Hubbard and Mrs. Leo Williams and later Mrs. E. P. Merrick and Mrs. V. W Hammond presided. They wene assisted by Mrs. Roy Midkiff and Mrs. David Kelly. Mr. and Mrs. Gates, who have resided In Medford for 31 years, were married In Medaryville, Ind., on December 28, 1892. They made their first home In Chi cago. Later they lived in Indi anapolis and Noblesville, Ind. where Mr. Gates was In busi ness and in 1911 Mr. Gates came to the Pacific coast while con valescing from a long illness. Impressed with Medford, Mr. Gates decided to make the town his home and returned to Indiana only long enough to close his business. He arrived in Medford the second time in February of 1912 and has resided here since For many years he was one of the town's leading automobile dealers, retiring two years ago. The couple have three chil dren, George Gates, Mrs. Dean and Mrs. J. W. Judy of Walla Walla, Wash. Mrs. Judy was pre vented from attending the cele bration by Illness and difficult traveling conditions. There are seven grandchildren, two of whom are in the armed forces. George Gates, Jr., and John Judy both being in the navy. Subscription Dance Held at Burgoynes Burgoyne's on the South Pa cific highway was the scene of the Subscription dance New Year's eve with over 80 couples in attendance. The affair was one of a series of .dances held throughout the year by the Sub scription club. In charge of arrangements for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Parrett and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Gibbons. A local or chestra furnished music for the dancing. The "VRVs" is a newly organ ized group of women which is devoting time to the recreation and entertainment of soldiers at Camp White. The "VRVs" Is open not only to the young women of the com munity but women of all ages as shown by the popularity with which the older women are be ing received at the Outpost, USO and at Camp White recreational projects. Mrs. Purucker has been extended an invitation to attend Service Club No. 2 at Camp White in the near future and at Hess-Piche Wedding Held At Piche Home Miss Eleanor Ruth Hess, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Hess of Portland and Albert H. Piche, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Piche of this city were mirried at the home of the bridegroom's parents, 47 North leach street last Sunday after noon at 1 o'clock. The ceremony was read by the Rev. Herald G. Gardner, pastor of St. Mark's Episcopal church. For her wedding the b. ide selected en afternoon dress of blue crepe with an orchid corsage. They will make their home In Portland until February when Mr. Piche will be called into the air corps. Mrs. Piche Is a graduate of Grant high school and attended Linfield college for two years where she was affiliated with Phi Beta Mu sorority. Tlw bridegroom graduated from Mdford high school where he was prominent In ath letics and attended Linfield col lege where he was also active in sports. He vas affiliated with P 1 Epsilon fraternity. Wedding Read Christmas Eve In a simple Impressive cere mony at the Presbyterian church Christmas eve. Miss Veda Miller of this city -became the bride of Lieutenant Hugo Wetzelberg of RicUield Park, N. J., now at tached to the 353 Engineers at Camp White. Rev. H. W. Hansen officiated. The bride, a former Marsh field girl, wore a turquoise b'.ve dress with black accessories and talisman rose corsage. She has resided in this city for the past year. Mr. and Mrs. Wetzelboi-R are now at home at 300 South River side avenue. K H 1 that time will be . Introduced to the soldiers as "Auntie" Pur ucker. Several other older wom en have also volunteered their time to the entertainment of the men at Camp White. For many years Mrs. Purucker welcomed and cared for the ba bies of the community and now these "babies" whom she had worked and worried over are sta tioned in army camps of the na tion. That she still cares for their welfare and happiness is shown by her desire to mother and help cheer the boys at Camp White. Her kindly spirit and happy philosophy of life will ease the loneliness in the hearts of all who meet her. New Year's Eve Wedding Held At Local Church First wedding of the new year In Medford was that of Miss Gladys Pearl Miller of Medford and Cpl. Corbin Louis Shirley of Camp White. The ceremony was read at midnight Thursday by the Rev. R. W. Coleman of the First Christian church at the For her wedding the bride Coleman home. wore a dress of powder' blue with a lavender orchid corsage. Attendants were Miss Eris Lan des of Medford and Lt. Louis Gele, Jr., of Camp White. The bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Miller, were also present and Mr. Miller gave his daughter in marriage. Cpl. Shirley formerly resided In Louisiana. Open House At Boyle Residence Mr. and Mrs. John C. Boyle, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius B. Col lins and Grace Collins enter tained with open house on New dear's day at the Boyle resi dence, 1019 South Oakdale ave nue. A large group of guests called between the hours of 3 an 1 5 p. m. The rooms were dec orated in keeping with the New Year's holiday with silver and white bells and flowers. BUY U. S. WAR BONDS Moss-Draney Wedding Read At Camp White The marriage rites of Miss Helen Eugenia Moss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Moss of Richmond.Va., and Lt.Thomas Merritt Draney, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Merritt Draney of Upper Darby, Penn., were solemnized Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Camp White. The double ring service was read by Chaplain Vander Graff at Chapel No. 1 at the camp at 5:30 o'clock in the after noon. For the ceremony the bride wore a suit of powder blue with fuschia accessories and an orch id corsage. She was given in marriage by Col. Paul Murray. The matron-of-honor, Mrs. R. F. Muller, wore a biege dress with brown accessories and a corsage of yellow rosebuds. The groom was attended by Capt. John C. Bode. Ushers were Lt. R. F. Muller and Lt. D. Hearst. The bride's mother was here from Richmond for the cere mony and wore a dress of elec tric blue with gardenias. Preceding the ceremony Pvt. Weckstein sang "Because" and "The Lord's Prayer," with Cpl D. Obrrigan at the organ. The chapel was decorated with greenery and white and orchid chrysanthemums. The bride's family Is well known in Richmond and prior to coming west for her marriage Miss Moss was entertained by many friends. She attended John Marshall high school in Rich mond and Pan American College for Girls. Lt. Draney Is with the 263rd Infantry regiment at Camp White. Prior to his army service Lt. Draney attended Polytechnic Institute at Blacksburg, Vir ginia. Following a wedding trip Lt. and Mrs. Draney will reside t Medford. -4- Party Honors Local Visitor The annual CHS Christmas party was held at the home of Miss Cornelia TJoelker last Sun day evening and a special feature of the evening was a shower honoring Mrs. Arlen Thurman, Miss Cornelia Tjoelker and her sister, Miss Jeanette, were host esses. Games were played during th evening and Rifts xchanad. Later refreshments were served to the Mesdames Trena Heard. Avanel Stanton, Thelma Heard Howe, Henry Tjoelker, Frankie True Howard, the Misses Mar- jorie Reich, Bette Lou Reich, Emmy Lou Knips, Mura Mills and the hostesses. ' Mrs. Thurman Is the former Bertha Tjoelker of this city. She has been residing In Portland since her marriage there the lat ter part of October. Mrs. L. G. Myles Heads Church Guild Mrs. L. G. Myles was elected president of the Evening Guild of St. Mark's Episcopal church at the December meeting of the group last Monday evening at the parish hall on North Oak dale street. Judy of Eugene, former Medford resi dents, announce the engagement of their daughter, Helen, to the Rev. George Edward Hardy, son of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Har dy, Jr., of Newark, N. J. Miss Judy attended the Uni versity of Oregon and studied voice with Edna Leslie Pearson before going to Chicago. She at tended the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary of Chicago and for the past four years has been a pupil of Philip Manuel of the Manuel and Williamson studios. She is soloist at the Tab ernacle Baptist church and the Second Baptist church, both of Chicago. She is a member of Pht Beta. national professional fraternity of music and speech, and recent ly appeared In the opera, "Rigo letto" as Maddalena, with the American Opera Company of Chicago. The Rev. Hardy attended As- bury college, Wilmore, Ky.; Up sala college. East Orange, N. J., and at present is a student at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary In Chicago, where he will be graduated in May. He is assistant pastor of the Second Baptist church of Chicago. No date has been set for the wedding. Helen Chirgwin Betrothal Told Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Chirgwin have announced the engagement of their daughter, Helen, to Wil liam Ray Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Thomas of Salem. Miss Chirgwin, who spent the Christmas holidays here with her parents, graduated from Willamette university in the class of 1942 and has been cm ployed In the Salem public li brary during the past year. Mr. Thomas also a graduate of Willamette university is now completing his senior year in the Willamette law school. Although no date has been set for the wedding it will probably be an event of the coming summer. Richard P. Peat, Dec. 19 at 4 o'clock in th Epis copal church at Portland. Tha ceremony was read in the after noon by the Rev. Elbert Riddick. The Garlocks resided in this city for 17 years before moving north and are well known her. Th bride was dressed in tur quoise blue with brown acces sories and was attended by Mis Helen Hannan, her roommate for four years at Oregon State college. The church was decorat ed with small whit chrysanthe mums. . . A recaption and wadding sup per was served at th Old Heath man hotel at 7 o'clock in th evening and a two tiered wed ding cake and white chrysanthe mums decorated the table. The couple left th following day for Tacoma where they will make their home, Lieut.
