Brawls In Cafe Glen Howell Evans, 40, was fined $10 in city police court this morning on a charge of being disorderly in a public place. Evans was taken into custody after a call from the Cozy cafe where it was stated he had been annoying pa trons. Taft, R., O., fired the first shot today in what was interpreted as the preliminary bout of a forthcoming fight in the new congress for enactment of a sales tax. Taft, leader of sales tax advo cates in the old congress, re newed his recommendation for a 10 per cent levy on all sales except food to defray part of tne costs or war. He estimated that such a tax ' would - raise $4,000,000,000 annually. "There is no single tax that anyone has thought of yet that will yield anything like that amount of money," he said. "We have to D reserve the fiscal anlv. ency of the federal' government and the way to do it is to be realistic. Dec. 22 (U.B One of the two Japanese air strips on the beach southeast of Buna was in aUied hands today and the other was under attack from both ends In some of the heaviest fighting of the cam paign.- The main attack was at the southeastern end of the strip, in the Cape Endaiadere section about two miles from the Buna Mission, with light tanks over running the enemy's Bunker type strong points of connected steel and concrete defenses. Find Nips Remnants . As this and another attack. from across the Buna creek, con tinued at the main front. It de veloped that Australians who captured the village of Gona al most two weeks ago were still finding Japanese remnants and some of the enemy troops who landed a week ago at the Mam- bare Estuary, 40 miles northwest up the coast from Buna, were still trying to organize for ac tion. Analysis of Gen. MaeArthur's communiques for the last sev eral weeks showed that only when light American-built gen eral Stuart tanks went into ac tion last Friday did Australian and American infantry find it possible to advance speedily Into the heart of the Buna oeacn head. Immediately after sundown, every evening Sawyer said, mil lions of Chinese farmers, coolies and mandarins produce weapons from skilfully concealed hiding places and become guerilla fight ers, stalking and killing unwary Japanese, Sawyer said.
