Brawls In Cafe Glen Howell
Evans, 40, was fined $10 in city
police court this morning on a
charge of being disorderly in a
public place. Evans was taken
into custody after a call from
the Cozy cafe where it was
stated he had been annoying pa
trons. The man attempted to
evade the police but In his rush
to leave the cafe took the wrong
overcoat. Forced to show up at
the station for his coat, Evans
was then arrested. He is a na

One of the two Japanese air
strips on the beach southeast of
Buna was in aUied hands today
and the other was under attack
from both ends In some of the
heaviest fighting of the cam
paign.-
The main attack was at the
southeastern end of the strip,
in the Cape Endaiadere section
about two miles from the Buna
Mission, with light tanks over
running the enemy's Bunker
type strong points of connected
steel and concrete defenses.

As this and another attack.
from across the Buna creek, con
tinued at the main front. It de
veloped that Australians who
captured the village of Gona al
most two weeks ago were still
finding Japanese remnants and
some of the enemy troops who
landed a week ago at the Mam-
bare Estuary, 40 miles northwest
up the coast from Buna, were
still trying to organize for ac
tion.
Analysis of Gen. MaeArthur's
communiques for the last sev
eral weeks showed that only
when light American-built gen
eral Stuart tanks went into ac
tion last Friday did Australian
and American infantry find it
possible to advance speedily Into
the heart of the Buna oeacn
head. The Japanese had with
stood a virtual siege In this
swampbound jungle fortress
area for more than a month.

Study of the communiques
showed also no mention of allied
naval forces operating in sup
port of the campaign. - There
were nine mentions of Japanese
naval forces maneuvering be
tween New Guinea and New
Britain and several reports of
attempts at least two were
successful to land more troops
at widely separated points along
the New Guinea coast.: By set

Japanese could drag the New
Guinea campaign on for months.
The Japanese landings were
made despite substantial allied
