Well the long-winded debate over the elevation

"military expediency."
That has been this paper's contention all alonfr.
First things should come first, and in the midst of
a war to the death, military considerations should
come before all others.
IN other words if this move was justified by military
expediency the"n it was right
And the Nation and other ultra liberal mediums
of opinion, were WTong in condemning General Eisen
howr, Secretary of State Hull, President Roosevelt,
et al, for refusing to sanction a political debate in
North Africa, while the Vichy French troops mowed
down the Yanks with bombs and machine guns.
The amazing thing to this department, is not that
the Fighting French proponents now admit it, but
that they ever contended otherwise.
We believe it is the first time in the history of
war, that high representatives of any combatant
nation have, in the midst of the fighting, seriously
advocated purely political considerations being
placed before military ones!
Another $64 Question
"The Devil was sick, the Devil a monk would be;
"The Devil was well, the Devil a monk was he!"
That is the only explanation we can offer for
Benito Mussolini and his latest speech about the
war, the man really must be sick, and seriously so.
Otherwise how could he suddenly become such a
"monk?" '
For here is the most extraordinarily frank and
damaging confession of guilt and weakness, made
by any leader on either side in this conflict, since
World War No. 2 started.
And by a dictator who hitherto has been the most
bombastic, vainglorious and boastful. A copy of the
speech in fact only strengthens our original belief,
that this amazing apologio has never received the
notice it deserves.
IMAGINE! Benito doesn't even deny he is what
Winston Churchill called him, a hyena !
He doesn't exactly admit it But he maintains
he doesn't call Churchill any such names and there
fore rates as a "thousand times more the gentleman !"
And he does admit he stabbed France in the
back, but in the mood of a shamefaced juvenile fisti
cuff er claims France stabbed Italy FIRST.
MOT a suggestion throughout of victory or even
' ultimate avoidance of defeat In fact II Duce
admits he no longer likes to forecast the future, one
thing only being certain, this most formidable
struggle in human history is a question of to be or
not to be, a question of destruction or survival.
Whereupon the former strident and strutting
"Caesar" declaring only Fascist Italy tells the truth,
listed Italy's was casualties to date :
Dead: Army, 40.388; Navy, 33,300; Air, 20,124.
Wounded: 80.773.

And this in a country with a population only
about a third that of the United States!
TIfHAT'S the answer? What is the big idea?
' The entire speech has this department stumped.
It appears to be a problem for Hitler's favorite
doctor, or alienist!
Vladivostock Again
Our special operative in Washington, D. C, re
ports a terrific struggle is going on there between
certain airpower and naval experts, over the war in
the South Pacific
The air experts, according to this report, want
to abandon the attempt to reach Japan by the way
of the Solomons and Philippines, and strike directly
from Vladivostock via the Aleutians.
The navy not only maintains the Japs must first
be driven out of the Philippines, but to start anything
through the Aleutians would -result in a Siberian
attack on Russia by Japan, and .perhaps Stalin's
defeat
"THIS "typewriter strategist" can't rule on the con
test from a technical standpoint of course, the
air and naval experts will have to thresh that out.
Moreover as all readers of this department will
recall, this U. S. attack on Tokyo from Vladivostock
has always been a pet scheme of ours (in fact
records will show it was first suggested in this
column a year ago this month) so this court would
be prejudiced.
RUT speaking entirely from a very general and
u layman's standpoint it has always seemed to us
that staging an attack on Japan from Australia was
taking the long way around, when a much shorter
and surer route lay through the North Pacific with
Alaska as a base.
This idea wasn't entirely original with us. In a
conversation with General Arnold before the war
with Japan started and before the General was chief
of U. S. air, he remarked, that in any war in the
Pacific, ALASKA (NOT Medford!) would be the
corner-stone of U. S. offense and defense!
On the other hand, of course it is obvious that
had strong U. S. forces NOT been sent to the South
Pacific and kept there, Australia would long ago
have been conquered by the Japs! '

THYROID AND
A boy aged tilne years who
had adenoids was subject to the
habit of bed-wetting. The doctor

adenoids might
stop the bed
wetting, but on
the contrary
the boy was
worse after the
operation than
before. Then
the doctor sus
pected that re-

tion, so he gave the boy a small
dose of thyroid extract dally.
Promptly the boy stopped wet
ting the bed and never had any
further trouble from that habit.
Then the doctor tried thyroid
treatment In twenty-four other
cases of bed-wetting, and all ex
cept one responded to the treat
ment as well as the boy who had
lost his adenoids.
The doctor observed that all
of these bed-wetting children
who were so remarkably helped
by thyroid were undersize, un
derweight, had low vitality, con
stantly sub-normal body tem
perature, frequently complained
of feeling cold even in warm
summer weather or in surround
ings which other people consid
ered perfectly comfortable, and
often had cold, blanched fingers
and hands. Many of them had
adenoids and high arched palate.

I have done about all I can
regarding the rent control sit
uation. Have Investigated as far
aa possible, talked with attor
neys, real estate men, landlords,
etc.; finally reached the conclu
sion that the best thing to do la
petition congress for relief. Have
written what I believe la con
cise and brief complaint and pe
tition, submitted it for approval
by various parties. Having it
"stenographered" into present
able shape. Secured the court
house auditorium for Friday eve
ning (Dec. 18) for landlords to f
meet and discuss matters and "
now it Is up to the landlords. Ii
they are Interested enough to
show up for the Friday evening
meeting, express their views and
sign the petition and get us
enough publicity so people can
know that we are alive, then I
feel sure that a great deal of good
can be accomplished for the rent
al game in Medford. The meeting
Friday evening is for landlords
(and landladies) of Medford and
vicinity and every one of them
should be present; every one of
them that I have contacted saya
they will be there.
