Jackson county's total lndus ' trial payroll In 1941 was $7. 096,343 against the 1940 figure of $3,689,812, an Increase of 24.7 per cent, it was disclosed today in a press release from the State Unemployment Com pensation Commission, Salem. The state as a whole, the report showed, gained 39 per cent over its 1940 payroll, with Umatilla county leading the 36 counties in percentage of in crease with a 1941 payroll of $10,131,936 against 1940's $2,- 672.298. Klamath county, with a 1941 payroll of $16,327,787, dropped from second to third place. Josephine county's 1941 pay roll was $1,884,409 against the 1940 figure of $1,156,354, while Douglas county showed an in crease of from $2,662,328 to $4,200,199. Top payroll month for Jack son county In 1941 was August, with $731,920. The payroll by months for this county was: January $436,094 February $423,603 March $499,827 April $524,380 May $579,090 June $607,785 July $668,249 urdajr. Ha was given a six- month suspended sentence. Harris was accused of taking $155 belonging to his employer. Mike Beck, baker. Under terms of the suspended sentence, Har ris will reimburse his employer. who gave him his Job back with this understanding.. A total of 23 men and women are now confined in the county jail, either serving sentences or awaiting grand Jury action, the sheriff's office reports. This is a large number for this time of the year. Included In the Jail popula tion are Lorlan A. Chitwood and Dean Hoi brook, returned from Colusa, Calif., Saturday. Chitwood is charged with Troy amaen with the holdup on Anna Poole, Grants Pass woman taxi driver, on the Pacific high way near Cold Hill last August 25, and allegedly robbing her of $30, two tires, and forcing her to disrobe. Holbrook is Im plicated in the robbery of the Tim Daily and Reginald Parsons cabins in the Dead Indian sec tion. Chltwood's wife is also held in connection with the case. Kay R. Mansfield of Ashland. awaiting grand Jury action, is charged with a series of terror istic burglaries in this citv and Ashland. . Four soldfers are also anions the Jail prisoners. Hanna Sat- GRIFFIN CREEK BOYS PAY WOODSHED VISIT The sheriffs office Friday and Saturday rounded up a group of urimn creeK ooys ranging from eight to 13 years, who have been conducting a mischief campaign for several weeks, breaking win dows, throwing rubbish down wells, and entering homes while the owners were absent. They were taken from school and questioned. Parents of the boys handled the cases with old fash ioned methods, and the boys were not taken into Juvenile court, as usual, the sheriff said. 1 PERMANENT U.S.O. W. Richard Meyers of Los Angeles, who has been in Med ford since 31 on a temporary as signment, has been designated by his national office as a per manent USO staff member here. Mr. Meyers was in San Fran cisco and Tacoma during the first part of August working with USO clubs in those areas. He comes to Medford as an as sociate USO director represent ing the Jewish Welfare board. There are at present two other agencies represented in this area, the YWCA and the YMCA. Coming originally to make ar rangements for the recent Jew ish High Hold Days. Mr. Meyers will now work in regular acti vities and programs of the USO and assume the duties of a staff member here. He la a graduate of the Uni versity of Southern California in the field of education. In addi tion, he attended the University of California at Los Angeles for period of three years doing work in political science. His work in education has provided background for guiding and assisting in group activities. As a public school teacher in Los Angeles county, he directed many activities. His wife and baby daughter are expected to join him here shortly. The Grange Lake Creek Grange Lake Creek Grange met in regular session September 11, with Worthy Master Myrtle Charley presiding. Tom Stanley reported for the agricultural committee, quoting prices on grain; Reed Charley, on the Co-op committee, gave an Interesting report. He revealed that Manager Weaver was being inducted into service, and the need of procuring a new mana ger." EUyn Charley, on the Edu cational committee, read an ar ticle on the effect of the war on education. Floyd Charley, on the Scrap Drive committee told about the truck that is being used in the county to collect all scrap material. Everyone should make a careful survey of their farms and collect all scrap iron for the drive... Nora Bradshaw, H. E. chair man, received war stamps for sales slips sent to the State Grange. Everyone bring all your sales slips to each Grange meeting. A life membership was voted for Mary Moore. She and her late husband, Russ Moore, were the most faithful members in the Grange. Although they lived many miles from. Grange, over mountainous roads, they never missed a meeting until Russ' health broke. Everyone was happy to wel come WUlard Walch back to Grange. He has been In Bos Angeles working in a defense plant. Our gain may be our loss, however, we lose Louis Walch in the draft. Fred Stanley told about an ar ticle in the Grange Bulletin which stated one may get a gov ernment book, "Disease of Live stock." Secretary Mabel Brown was instructed to write for one, to be exchanged among the Grange members. Worthy Lecturer Mabel Stan ley presented Janet Charley with a beautiful black and gold Eversharp pencil, a gift from the Grange. Janet is attending col lege at Corvallis and will be greatly missed. She is our lady assistant steward. . H. E. Chairman Nora Brad shaw prepared a wonderful feast. Lake Creek Grans meets the second Friday of each month. Our next meeting will be Octo ber 9.
