When a rich and handiome new Interne. Dr.Carle ton Aab. comet to the hospital, all the other nurses rave about hint, but Riletta Is Indifferent or thinks she Is. Then, another nurse. Vivian Snyder. Invites both ol them to a party and arramet for Dr Ash to brim Riletta. On the afternoon before the party. Riletta finds herself eagerly look tnc forward to It as she makes her preparations. Her roommate. Lucy Slubbs. accuses her of being more Interested In Carleton Asb than she's trilling to admit, but Riletta scornfully denies this. CHAPTER VII DILETTA was nervously pac- lng the floor of her room. It was nine o'clock, the time Dr. Ash had said he would call for her. Hating herself for her eagerness, she had been dressed and waiting since eight o'clock. She had had very few dates In her life and. despite the Indiffer ence she had expressed to Luc that afternoon, she had to confess to herself now that she was excited over this one The handsomest In terne in the hospital, and a million aire at that, was taking her out The other nurses had made no secret of the fact that they envied her One In particular, Beatrice . Blake, had gone out of her way that afternoon to say so. Beatrice was a red-headed, rather tempera mental girl whom none of the other nurses liked very much. She had the reputation of being man-crazy and. at times, had made something of a spectacle of herself In her ob vious attempts to play up to some of the Internes. "Aren't you the lucky one I" she bad said to RlletU. with a distinct edge to her voice. "Drawing Dr. Ash as your escort to Vivian's party! Bteallng a march on the rest of us!" -Do you call It luck?" Riletta had responded, with a shrug. "Luck I I should say sol How did you manage it?" "Oh. It was just an accident, really. Vivian happened to invite both of us to the party at the same time, and so It was quite natural for her to suggest that he bring me." "80 that's how It happened?" Beatrice had oeen plainly relieved that the suggestion hadnt come from Dr Ash. "Well, anyway. I still say you're lucky. I'm going to the party too. but no one made any arrangements for a handsome young man to escort me. I guess I'll Just have to find my way there by myself " Riletta had wondered guiltily whether she ought to Invite Bea trice to come along with Dr. Ash and herself, but something had kept her from doing so. NOW. glancing at the clock on her bureau, she saw that It was nine-fifteen. She frowned. What could be delaying Dr Ash? Trying not to be Impatient, she scrutinised herself In the mirror. The dubonnet velvet jacket which she had borrowed from Lucy looked very well over her dress. Yes. It gave her a very modish appearance 8he examined her make-up and touched It up a bit. Until she had come to the hospital, she had never used rouge or lipstick, for her mother had disapproved of make up Mrs Ranler had argued that nature's own coloring was far superior to anything that came out of a onx or a tube In those days, when RlletU had spent most of her time out in the open. It had been easy enough to look blooming Now however she t h ou g h t ruefully, things were Quite different. Work ins in the hospital, with little con tact with the sunshine, she had lost some of her natural coloring. The hands of the clock pointed to nine-twenty and then nine twenty-five Riletta began to grow anxious Could Dr Ash hajre for gotten their date? If he was slmplv delayed, why hadnt he phoned? After all, this party this evening must seem quite dull and common place to a young man of his sort He must have been to hundreds ot parties tn grand places, with rich and beautiful society girls Maybe he had decided that he didn t want to waste his time taking a nurse to a simo e little party given by an other nurse that it would be too boring. RlletU began to wish that not quite so many people knew about her date. How the other girls would gloat If Dr Ash did let her downl Finally, at nine-thirty, she grim ly reached a decision. She would phone Vivian and tell her that she wain t reeling weu ana coumn i come to the party, after all. She wouldn't let that uppity Interne put her lo an embarrassing position! AS SHE left her room and suited toward the phone booth at the end of the corridor, she saw Bea trice Blake hurrylrg toward her. "Oh. RUetu. 1 have a message for you from Dr Ash." "Yes?" RlletU tried to appear calm and composed. "He has oeen delayed and does not know when he can get here." "I see." Rlletu pretended that the news did not dismay her. "Is he detained by a case?" "I don't know He dldnt say very much. You know how nonchalant he Is aoout everything. He just shrugged and said Tel) her I'll be along as soon as I can.' " Rlletu turned and started back to her room Fury surged through her. If he thought she was going to wait here all night for him. he was very much mistaken I She would go to the party alone let him find her gone when he finally came. The Idea of his sending her a casual message like that after she had been cooling her heels for the past half hour! He might at least have phoned and explained. Beatrice, ugglng after her, said. "What are you going to do?" "I'm going to the party without him." Rlletu snapped. "Good for you ! That's the spirit! You don't intend to be broken hearted do you?" "Broken - hearted I" Riletta laughed scornfully. "Why should I be broken-hearted?" "Oh, I lust thought you might be like the rest of the girls all a tremble If Dr Ash even looks tn their direction. I think a girl's fool ish to be that way." "Absolutely!" RlletU was now back In her room and was throwing on her coat "I'll go along with you," said Beatrice. "1 was Just setting out when I ran Into Dr. Ash." "All right let's take a taxi." AS THE two girls left the nurses home, Beatrice was secretly patting herself on the back. She had succeeded In doing what she wanted to do had succeeded tn causing a misunderstanding Be tween Rlletu and Carleton Ash. His message to Riletta had been far more explicit than Beatrice had made It. He had been unexpectedly deuined by Dr Courson, the chief of staff In connection with an emergency case He had said to Beatrice. "Tell Miss Ranler that I'll come just as quickly as I can and that I'm aw fully sorry to keep her waiting. I'd have phoned her but haven't haa time. Tell her this Is a very par ticular case and that Dr Crouson wanU my help. She'll understand, of course." "Of course." Beatrice had said and then, she had taken particular pains to see that RlletU did not understand at all Her reason was that she had been consumed with jealousy ever since she had heard that Carleton Ash was going to Uke Rlletu to the party She feared that.
