No curtailment In quantity or quality of surplus commod ities available for the school lunch program is expected In the coming year according to county Parent-Teacher officers. This information was gained from Roy Schwartz of the Port land office of the surplus com modities commission who was in Medford recently and attended a meeting of Parent-Teacher officers, achool board members and school officials from all parts of the county. Mr. Schwartz stated that the commission was actively promot ing the serving of achool lun ches as part of the national war program, believing that adequate school lunches are a vital part of the fight against malnutri tion. Mr. Schwartz said "school lunch programs should not be curtailed because of the war rather they should be expanded because of the war". No Transportation Previously transportation costs of commodities used by schools has been met by the Oregon State Welfare commis sion, but this aid is no longer available and transportation costs must now be met by the sponsoring group. A supply depot for this locality has been set up at Grants Pass, Mr. Schwurtz said, and Jackson county groups may obtain their supplies from it singly or in groups. The Oregon congress of Parent-Teacher associations is sponsoring a movement for a state fund to provide transpor tation. Figure, at the county school superintendent's office show that 29 schools out of 49 districts participated in the school lunch program last year, using sur plus supplies, and that about four participated to a lesser degree. An effort Is to be made this year to expand the number. It has been announced that Jackson county ha. been in eluded in the set-up which will supply WPA cooks to prepare school lunches the coming year.
