JUDGE TOU VELLE GIVES LAND FOR Swlmmlnf facilities In the cool waters of the Rogue river have been made available to Camp White'i military person nei through the cooperation of Judge F. L. Touvelle, public pirited citizen of Jacksonville, it was announced Saturday from headquarters of Colonel Owen R. Meredith, camp commander, Judge TouVelle has provided sufficient land for this purpose at a point near Bybee bridge, where the beach is smooth and sandy and the current is not too swift to be hazardous, colonel Meredith's headquarters stated It was added that the location was ideal for swimming. Included in the facilities are safety ropes and rafts, life pre servers, diving boards, dressing quarters and sanitary conveni ences. The swimming area is approximately 200 yards below Bvbee bridge, and it was an nounced that bathing suits would be worn. Qualified lifeguards will be provided by Camp White ana all organizations using the faclll ties and an officer will be in charge at all times. Diving from any part of the bridge will be prohibited. Officers and soldiers have been cautioned' that the Rogue river is lust what the name im plies and to exercise the utmost caution at all times. SB The Boy Scout camp at Lake o' Woods will open for the sec ond period Monday, again at full capacity, according to Kenneth Wells, Crater Lake area execu tive, who spent Saturday in Medford arranging for arrival of the new contingent of Scouts. The camp houses 109, Including boys and staff. Mr. Wells reported the camp this year one of the most suc cessful ever held. There has been no illness, no accidents and weather conditions and camp life in general have been ideal, he said. The final period will open July 29 and registration for this time is only two-thirds full, the area executive said. Boys wish ing to enjoy the camping op portunity should make applica tion at Scout headquarters near the Bear creek bridge. L REGISTRY OPEN Registration for the 1942 pear packing school is progressing satisfactorily according to of ficials in charge of the school. Anyone living in southern Ore gon interested in learning to qualify as a packer la urged to get in touch with any local pack ing house. Applications are also available at the principal's office in the Medford senior high school on South Oakdale or at the city school superintend ent's office in the city hall. Mrs. Mary Lou Vorheis, who has had successful experience as an instructor and supervisor of packing schools, will be in charge of instruction. The school will be held at Pinnacle plant number 2 on South Front and Fourteenth streets. Southern Oregon resi dents 18 years of age or older are eligible to enroll. Captain RoBert VanRoo. ord nance officer of the 91st Infan try Division at Camp White, Friday became the first officer of, the division to receive a pro motion from the war department. Captain VanRoo, according to Major General Charles II. Ger hardt's headquarters, was ad vanced to the rank of major. Hi reported for duty at Camp White July 8, after serving as an instructor in the ordnance school at the United States mill tary academy at West Point. o WINDOWS and DOORS n a n lC u a m planing H. G. WALTERMIRE IN NAVY SERVICE Harold O. Waltermlre. chief electricians' mate, naval con struction battalion, has recently returned to the west coast for H. G. Waltermire transfer to one of the new Pa cific naval bases, after complfe tion of seven weeks indoctrina tion training at naval training centers at Chicago and Norfolk, Va. Having been employed as an electrician for the California Oregon Power Co., for the past 23 years, Waltermire is well known in southern Oregon. He enlisted In the naval construc tion battalion last April 1 and was called to active duty one month later. Mr. and Mrs. Wal termire, their two daughters and son live at 903 So. Holly. BUTTE F. BOARD Another deputy sugar board has been set up. this time at Butte Falls, under the supervi sion of Harry L. Lowe, superin tendent of Butte Falls schools. Hobart Price, executive secre tary of Jackson county ration ing board announced yesterday. Price stated that the ration ing board hopes to set up boards in other outlying districts such as Trail. Rogue River. Gold Hill and Ruch. At present deputy boards are located at Central Point, Jacksonville and Butte Falls. He also Issued a call for 30 to 40 volunteer workers for fil ing Tuesday and Wednesday at the rationing board office on the top floor of the city hall. Girl Scouts and others with filing experience are needed for those two days Price explained. He said the board Is "grateful to the many ladles and Girl Scouts who have been helping us but we are still in need of 30 to 40 volunteer workers to file sugar ration cards." Filing will make It possible for more efficient help on the part of the board employes or for transferring of cards to another board. Anyone who did not receive enough sugar on their first ap plication for canning may se cure a second application for the needed amount at this or any time, Price said. MEMORIAL PICNIC GROUND PLANNED MILL Phono 4730 VACATION BIBLE SCH00LT00PEN J Vacation Bible School at the Jacksonville Presbyterian church opens Monday at 9 a. ro. for a two hour session daily for the coming six days. Children from five to 13 years of age are invited to the school, regardless of denomination. The Rev. and Mrs. Lawrence Mitchelmore will be in charge, assisted by a staff of competent teachers. Cards were sent to a number of children during the past week but those not receiving cards are also invited to participate in the summer Bible school. This is the first Bible school held in Jacksonville for several years and it is expected that 33 to 50 children will attend, it was stated. General theme of the school is "Life of Christ" with Bible drama, memory work, music and crafts. Each day a different phase of the "Life of Christ" will be studied. The program includes: Monday. 'Why Jesus Came to Earth"; Tuesday, "Je sus As a Child"; Wednesday, 'Jesus In Church"; Thursday, Jesus at Work"; Friday. "What Jesus Thought About God' and Saturday, "Jesus In the 'World Today". Friday evening a Vacation Bible school graduation will be held to which parents and friends are invited. Diplomas will be presented to those with five-day perfect attendance and certificates to others. The school will be climaxed Saturday with a picnic on the church lawn. driveWeld Austin LeRoy Vroman, 82, 122 Tripp street, pleaded not guilty in the city police court yesterday on a charge of failure to give right-of-way and will appear Monday at 9 a. m. in the city court. Vroman was driv ing the automobile which, city police reported, collided with the passenger car being driven by Kenneth Cooke, 20, 238 South Central avenue, Friday evening at tne intersection of King and Dakota streets. Miss Mildred Scott. South Columbus street, passenger In the Cooke car. was taken to Community hospital by Perl's ambulance where she received treatment for bruises. She was released yesterday. Also riding in the Cooke auto mobile were Vernon Clement, 823 Niantic street, and Miss Carol Hall, route 1, Box 488. Medford. Neither Clement, Miss Hall nor Cooke were injured. City police reported that the Cooke car, which was traveling norm on King street, was struck on the left front hub, pushed sideways and turned over. The right front fender on the Vro man car was badly bent and the bumper knocked off. BOY 16, GIRL 14, John Von Hove, Jr., 18. of Gladstone, Ore., and his com panion Christine McLean, 14 of Oregon City, received medical treatment at Community hospi tal yesterday after the automo bile they were driving overturn ed yesterday about 11 a. m. on the Old Gold hill road. The youths said they left Ore gon City Thursday about mid' night and continued south un til they were stopped yesterday morning by a state police on the gravel road at the north end of the. While the state police was checking the sedan with the state police office records, the two youngsters turned onto the old Gold Hill road and while being pursued by the state po lice tne car was overturned. What probably has been many American citizen's suppressed desire to ride in an Army Jeep may be realized through ar rangements made by W. A Gates, chairman of the Jackson county war bond sale commit te and his co-workers. To all residents who purchase a bond during the coming week a ride in an army jeep is offered at the Victory Center Friday and Saturday. Gates said yesterday that a sufficient supply of ieens will be on hand to take care of the anticipated "rides." The Jeeps will be in charge of handsome soldiers with south ern accents," according to Gates. who urged all to take this no- portunity to enjoy a ride in one of the American army's famed pieces of army equipment. It was explained that in pur chasing a bond during the com ing week at the post office, bank or other issuing agency, that the bond holder should ask for a dated copy of the bond applica tion blank. This can then be presented at the Victory Center for a "ride in a Jeep." The Incident occurred in the railroad yards near Eighth street and McGinty reported about $10 taken from his pockets. City police said Saturday that McGinty met the soldiers, Ser geant William O. Owens and Technical Sergeant James J. McAtee, In a local beer parlor. Later the three decided to go to another beer establishment and while walking through the railroad yards McGinty was slugged from behind by one of the soldiers. Sergeants Owens and McAtee were being held in the city Jail yesterday pending transfer to the county Jail. They were ar rested in a local beer establish ment by military police and city police later Friday night. Mc Ginty was taken to Community hospital where he received med ical treatment for injuries to his head. DEMOCRATIC POST George A. Codding, newly appointed special attorney for the government In connection with the acquisition of land for Lamp White and other Oreeon defense projects, announced his resignation yesterday as chair man of the Jackson Countv Democratic Central Committee. Codding, who was reeentlv elected county chairman by a unanimous vote7 explained that the Hatch act prohibited federal officials from holding office in any political organization. A new county chairman will be named at a meeting at 212 Liberty building Monday at 8 p. m., called by Dr. E. W. Bar num. secretary. Leading Demo crats of the county are urging the election of Ward B.
