MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD OREGON, FRIDAY, JULY 10. 1942. PAGE SEVEN o Price Control Failure Seen in Recent Boost In Wall Street Trade Br CLAUDE A. JAGGER ' New York. July 10 OP) Are inflation control! holding? Some Wall streeters doubt It In the past two days, buyers have given the stock market its busiest trading of the year, boosting leading shares $2 to $4 or more. Meanwhile, wheat prices were bid up around 5 cents a bushel at Chicago. others At the same time, pointed out that President Roosevelt's even-point program for keeping prices down was announced only last April 27. that Price Administrator Hen ' derson's retail price celling was clamped down only May 18. While some adjustments, and some apparent wavering may appear, they said, control is so vital that firmer measures are eventually inevitable, if needed. Jess Jones Fears Ultimate Bankruptcy Only last Wednesday, Jesse Jones, secretary of commerce and federal loan administrator, warned that price inflation ' would "lead to ultimate bank ruptcy national and Individ ual." Three recent developments were mentioned In Wall street as leading to speculation that price controls may be cracking: 1. Recommendation by war labor boarl panel that a pica for a $la-day wage increase by workers in four so-called "little steel" companies be granted. The panel's recommendation still has to be decided by the board. 2. Approved by the office of price administration of increased prices of canned and frozen fruits and vegetables. 3. Passage by the senate of a bill to permit full parity loans to farmers on six major crops. This would bring the loan value of wheat, for instance, up to $1.34 a bushel. July wheat closed In the Chicago pit yes terday at 1.21V4. To become law, the measure still must pass the house, and be signed by the president. Jones said that In 1943 the American people would have about $30,000,000,000 more In come than the value of things for which money can be spent. "If we permit that amount of money to run wild," he asserted, 'it will cause very great dam age to our whole country." Taxes, Bond Sales Offer Palliative Treasury experts recommend pulling much of this money back through taxation and sale of war bonds to the public The new tax bill, still under debate in congress, is $2,700,000,000 short of the treasury's requested goal. Cost of living In the United States, as based on the U. S. bu reau of labor statistics index for June an Increase of about 18 per cent over the 1933-39 average. Meanwhile, Incomes have mounted. The bureaus' Index of employment in all manufactur ing industries is up about 40 per cent over the 1935-39 aver age. WING RE-ELECTED GUERNSEY LEADER Charles A.
