Its safety and sanity Is apt to be lonesome with the rest of the world everything else but. Idealists, of which former Pre sident Hoover is one, proclaim "the world can have peace, or revenge, but not both. Emm ent opponents of this line of thought opine the world will get both, because this time the hard- boiled, not the meek will "la . herit the earth." The meek wrote the Treaty of Versailles. Germany, and the little Axis lands, need the "iron hand" and policing by the United Nations. Another nutty paperhanger might come along and "mis lead" them into World war III. some day. A. W. What a Leon Henderson, and other key officials in Wash ington, are weeping and wailing because their various and sundry appropriations have been cut-down. The CCC has been cut off entirely. The Department of Agriculture wants the modest sum of $680,000,000 and but nothine has been ous and sundry other federal departments, the grand and glorious spending spree, appears to be slowing down somewhat, and easy money seems to be dwind ling a trifle. As a result one hears a terrific tearing of shirts and gnashing of molars in the check-writing departments, as the congress adjourns for the week end holiday. WELL, as in all such reactions, the economy drive may be overdone and some regrettable disloca tions result. We are asked to settle a wager: Mr. A says Sevas topol HAS fallen: Mr. B, says it HASN'T. Who is right? Sorry, boys, but it can t tance. We have our own idea, money on. However if you insist, here goes: It's a draw. Both A and B are right, from one angle, both wrong from another. A. is-right when he says Sevastopol has fallen be cause the main citadel did fall into German hands Wednesday last. B is right when he says it hasn't, because there was no formal surrender on the part of the Red comman der, he withdrew, retreating slowly through the environs, to maintain a holding action, while he made it possible for the main force to escape. SO to decide this wager one would have to FIRST have an exact technical definition of what "to fall" in modern warfare means. If it means "surrender" by the defenders, a wins. If it means the loss of control of the chief strategic point and a DECISION in favor of the attackers, "A" wins. Without any such clear-cut definition of terms, however, this department will be compelled, with the information available, to raise both hands and de clare all bets off. Beware of the 4th! The staff of the Rogue River National Forest has made a real effort to bring this about. Just how long the forests here will remain open will depend upon one thing public cooperation. B UT, when Mom, Pop and the kiddies begin their Fourth of Julv iaunt into the bit: timber tomorrow they should keep firmly in General DeWitt, commander 01 the western aeiense area, of Oregon's Governor Sprague and of forestry officials here. Sensible precautions MUST be taken no smoking while traveling on forest roads, no camp fires without permits except on improved and posted camp grounds, no fire-building without the always important axe, shovel and water bucket at hand. HE danger of forest fires is always imminent in seasons such as this, when temperature is high and humidity low. If the utmost care is practiced by all who enter the woods, we may get through this season without serious trouble. Destruction of forests by criminal, but in war-time born of a thoughtless act can be just as damaging to our war effort, just as costly in vitally-needed lumber, just as helpful to the Axis cause, as the fire set by the saboteur. AND so, it is the duty of every man, woman and child who enters the forests tomorrow to see that no careless act will make them unintentional sabo teursfor whether deliberately or accidentally sot, fires in northwest forests now are sabotage. The forests are open, the this area are ready. Let us use them, enjoy them to the utmost, but NOT destroy them through careless ness. Military and forest officials are confident that we will accent the responsibility and trust which they have reposed in us. Let us be on guard Let us for victory today, for generations o: the future. The great bulk of vacant stores on Main street so far, however, are those formerly oc cupied by auto dealers. Food and drug stores are do ing well In most communities, but In some rural areas, a large number of people have left for the army or defense Jobs, and these sections are suffering. Seaside beach resorts are living from hand to mouth, and so ara the summer vacation places. Summer theaters are dead. ryDCTORS are scarce, due to "army calls upon the profes sion.
