How DID it happen What will the legal head oi the Roosevelt administration do now? For the nation that we bosom for the duration of was publicly branded by the Attorney General of the United States, as a nation conspiring to bring about the overthrow of this government! 'HOSE who question this have only to reread the Attorney General's opinion. There is no room left for any other interpretation. Said the Attorney General in etiect: Harry Bridges Is, or has been, a member of the Com munist party. The Communist party favors the violent over throw of the American government. There it is, in black and white ! VET today, the government thus officially con- demnod as an enemy committed to this country's destruction is accepted as an ally, a trusted brother in arms, who is not only to receive every financial and material assistance gratis, but for whom the soldiers and sailors of this country are now pledged to fight and die! If that doesn't break some sort of historical record as far as the United States is concerned, then what does! Wars like politics, make strange bedfellows but we believe this is the first time in modern history, that this country, or any other, has through an official government spokesman, branded a nation as hostile and treacherous one week, and signed an accord of mutual assistance and brotherhood, the next! How (vime? The answer is as difficult today, as it was when Attorney General Biddle's decision was announced the latter part of May, in fact this department has yet to hear ANY plausible answer, anything that at least makes sense. MOT that there can be any proper criticism of such an alliance. Under the circumstances there CAN'T be. As was remarked in this column at the time, we are in a war to the death. Russia whatever her politi cal philosophy may or may not be, is and for nearly a year has been, probably making greater sacrifices in blood and treasure for the allied cause, than any other world power on any battle front This then is no time to split legal hairs, or revive political lawsuits of a peace time period, calculated to divide the allies or alienate Russia. It is time to get together, fight together, and subordinate every con sideration to the complete defeat of the axis. Yet, by throwing this legal bombshell into the allied camp WHEN he did. Attorney General Biddle directly, and apparently deliberately, failed to do this. JR. Biddle's high reputation for honesty, patriot A"ism and his complete devotion to the allied cause, only makes the puzzle the more difficult to explain. As slated at the time, it has this department stumped. Judging by the absence of any convincing explanations from the President or his official family it has the Roosevelt administration stumped also. Not that the Attorney General after careful study, should not have ruled as he did on the Bridges case; but that he should, when no ruling was demanded, have made his decision known WHEN he did. TREATMENT In addition to the hygienic measures suggested in the pre ceding talk about hardening of the eyes (glacoma, Increased Intraocular tension or pressure within the eye ball) and the use of drops to contract the pupils or pre vent dilation or enlargement of the pupils, there are two other remedial suggestions I'd lnve s 1 1 g a t e carefully if had glaucoma that la. (This should not be confused with adrenin or adrenalin. which is derived from the me dulla or inner part of the ad renal gland.) Other names for cortion or the adrenal cortex hormine are adreno-cortin, su prarenal cortex solution and eschatin. Precise chemical char acter of this extract Is uncertain probably more than one hor mone In it, but at least one has been chemically Isolated and identified by the frightful name desoxycorticosterone. Dr. Eman uel M. Josephson, New York oculist, has reported excellent results from treatment of glau coma with cortin injections into the vein together with salt solu tion. Physicians may find Dr. Josephson's monograph on Cor tin Treatment of Glaucoma of Informative and practical value. (It is not for laymen.) Unlike adrenin or adrenalin (the hormone from the inner part or pith of the adrenal gland) cortin contracts the pu pils. It is desirable to give the patient sufficient cortin to accomplish this. Incidentally, when the use of a weak solu tion of adrenalin which wonld have little or no effect on the pupils of normal eyes causes wide dilation or enlargement of the pupils, the effect is charac teristic of glaucoma. Other solutions of medicines used as eye drops to contract aad keep contracted the pupils are highly beneficial In the early stages of glaucoma. The important thing, which too many victims of hardening of the eyes, glaucoma, fail to real ize, is that early recognition of the nature of the trouble may save eyesight which otherwise is almost certain to be lost. June 12 The insifle struggle for the Job of food administrator presented one of the finest pieces of wire pulling within the government In some time and now Claude Wickard, secretary of agricul ture. Is sitting where Herbert Hoover sat In the first world war, only more so. People Hoo verized voluntarily, accepted wheatless. meatless and other sorts of days to conserve food With Secretary Wickard it will be "must" :id not on a volun tary basis. To keep the record straight It may be explained that food will be supervised by two agencies, the food requirements committee (Wickard) and ra tioning by office of price ad ministration (Leon Henderson). Farmers of the Pacific north west can be told what to rale under the new program; wheth er to increase acreage on what they are producing, reduce the ; acreage, or plant a different 1 crop. Civilian consumers will ' discover canned vegetables and canned salmon hard to get. When the submarines have been disposed of and there is free movement of cargo ships, lend-lease will draw heavily upon the canned goods supply and other folds as the food needs of Rusia, Britain and other United Nations are insufficiently met by the United States, despite the thousands of tons that have been dispatched overseas. a a a KILLING two birds with one stone, a directive can be ex pected from Wickard to corn farmers to switch from that crop to soy beans. There is more corn than is required and not enough soy beans. Then, Instead of feeding corn to livestock wheat will be used, thereby re- ducing the surplus of that grain. Experiments were conducted with wheat In Washington and Oregon a few years ago by gov ernment officers who declared it met all requirements. This gives an idea of the authority vested in the food administrator. To assist vegetable growers who have a surplus that cannot be processed by the canneries, a directive will be issued to dis pose of the surplus on the fresh market. Civilians must mote and more depend on fresh vege tables and fruits instead of buy ing in cans at the grocery. Shortages are already seen In some food commodities and eventually these will be selected and rationed by OPA when ap prised of the scarcity by the food administrator. One of these is coffee, due to lack of bottoms to bring the beans from Central and South America, Dicisions of Wickard will be guided by weather conditions and the availability of farm help. This measure represents the latest Townsend plan for old-age pensions (re ferred to by members as the Townsend national recovery plan). It requires 218 signatures to make the petition effective, this being a majority of the house members. The assumption is that any member who signs the petition will vote for the bill it brings to the floor. Townsendites are numbered by the thousands in Oregon and Washington and, next to Califor nia, they are stronger in that section than in any other part of the United States. No information is released as to the number of signatures or names of representatives signing a petition, although any house member is privileged to inspect the document. When the 218th name is attached the names of signers are public property. As all representatives from north western states are on record for old-age pensions, it is assumed that all have signed; some have even made speeches urging sign ing up. If sufficient signatures are obtained the bill can be dis posed of at this session. There are 14,950,000 people over 80 years, but only a small percent age would come under the "re covery" plan.
