LION CLUB CHIEF FOR YEAR AHEAD Medford Lion club at their election meeting Wednesday held at the luncheon hour t Hotel Medford, placed Ed Mann at the helm for the ensuing year. Mr. Mann has been active In civic defense work and pilot ed the solicitation of Red Cross funds by service club groups. Other officers chosen were: First vice president. Cliff Proctor; second vice president, Maurice Schino; secretary-treasurer, Ice land J. Knox; Hon tamer, Rev. R. W. Coleman; tailtwister Frank (Red) J. Cullen. Direct ors chosen for two years were Jim Crigsby and J. A. McDoug all; director for one year, M. E. Olsen, Don T. Orput, Federal Secur ity agency director for Oregon - and the Columbia river area, addressed Lion club members on pending recreational prob lems before townspeople of the defense area. . Mr. Orput stressed the need of friendliness on the part of citizens toward the boys In uni form. Teamsters and all other workers should give up pleas ure driving for the duration, work longer hours, forget about vacations. 3. In event of gasoline ration in, all motor traffic should be channeled to specified arteries where checkers .would make certain that all private and busi ness vehiclea were loaded to ca pacity. Mr. Hammond was not only born and raised in this com munity, but has spent his entire telephone career in Medford After graduation from the Uni versity of Oregon, where he gained fame as a football player, he started In the telephone busi ness In Medford as a collector in 1012. Since that time he has played an active part In the de velopment of the Medford ex change from IS employes and about 1,210 telephones to ap proximately 100 employes and 4,400 telephones, including a modern dial system, Mr. Hammond has also been active in civic affairs, serving j as a city councilman, director 1 of the Chamber of Commerce, j president of the Kiwanis club and Rogue Valley Golf associa tion director. He is also past worshlpfull master of the Med ford Masonic lodge. He has two sons and one daughter, all who are graduates of the University of Oregon. Mrs. Hammond is also an Oregon graduate. Tlchenor, 87, long identified with Curry county political life, died at the Veterans' hospital here yesterday.
