Retiring queen Is Miss Beverly Brooks. Other elective officers are Miss Natalia Parker, senior princess. Miss Betty Frey, Junior pj'ncess. Miss Helen Webb, guitift, and Miss Joan Elliott, marshal. Miss Smith, chairman for the queen's ball, announced Miss Joan Humphrey as co-chairman. The annual ball will be an event of June 6 in the Masonic temple, bringing to a clou the focial activity of the bethel. Dinner Party At Dunagan Home Prospect, May 30 (Spl.) Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Dunagan were hosts at a dinner party at their home recently in honor of the birthdays of their son, Wayne, and brother-in-law, James Dole, and the silver wedding anniver sary of Mrs. Dunagan's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Vale Johnson. The center of the long table was banked with flowers, and silver bells. The dinner was served to Mr. and Mrs. Vale Johnson and daughters. Ethel Mae, Mildred and Carol, and sons, Jimmy, fMelvln, Delton and Clarence, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wormels dorf and children, Wynona and Billy, Mr. and Mrs. James Dole, Mrs. William Call, Harold Park er, Eugene, Wayne, Robert and Gloria Dunagan, and Mr. and Mrs. Dunagan. After dinner they were joined by Mr. and Mrs. William Gaines and son, Jerry, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Conway, Mr. and Mrs. Acil Weaver, Mrs. Hattie Clark, George Wayman. Mrs. Leon Glines, Miss Mary Glines, Miss Aileen Sherwood, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Dole and children, Glenna and Gary. Games and vocal and Instru mental music was enjoyed, after which gifts were presented to the guests of honor. Baker's Auxiliary At Woods Home t Mrs. Harry Ellis entertained the Baker's auxiliary at the home of Mrs. Denny Woods last week with dessert luncheon fol lowed by an afternoon of pinochle. Mrs. Wood held high score with Mrs. Dick Pruitt hold ing pinochle and Mrs. George Tedrick scoring low. Attending were Mrs. Dick Pruitt, Agnes Holzgang, Mrs. Lowell Morgan, Mrs. Bill Med calf, Mrs. Denny Woods, Mrs. George Tedrick and the hostess. Special Time Planned By Chorus A social meeting of Rogue Valley Mixed chorus will be en Joyed Monday at 8 p. m. at Kyle's restaurant at Central Point. F. hall. Officers were also elected for the year. Ina Huson will serve as noble grand; Lottie Cave, vice grand; Mary Wiley, recording secretary; Julia Gregory, treasurer. The social hour followed with cards and games and later re freshments were served by the committee. The group adjourned to meet again Monday. Children's Projects Are Discussed Mrs. A. S. Billon conducted a program on the work of chil dren in homes, schools and the church's children's hospital and other children's project at the homecoming Tuesday of the Women's Society of Christian Service at the First Methodist church. Mr,-. Ralph Woodford acted as secretary In the absence of Mrs. Earl Bradfish. Usual busi ness was conducted and reports given with Mrs. Cora Carder leading devotions. Eleanor Meek er and Joyce Kirby sang a duet and the afternoon closed with the Queen Esther circle serving refreshment. Pre-School Party To B Tuesday The annual Pre-School party for children who will be six on or before October 23, 1942, who plan to enter Roosevelt school in September will be honored Tuesday at Roosevelt school. Th plant was working on defame orders. Cause of th fir was undetermined. Th mill was partially destroyed by fir several years ago. WILLAMETTE HEAD RESIGNS; PROTEST STAND ON DRAFT Salem, May 30 Pi Pres ident Cs.i Sumner Kncpf of Willamette University resigned after a special committee of the school's board of trustees criti cized his conduct in registering for the draft. Dr. Knopf wrote the words "conscientious objector" on his selective service card last mc.nti'' despite protest ot draft, board of ficials over his right to do so. The matter became public when the Salem American Le gion post accused Knoi.f of cre ating a disturbance at.d register ing only after police action was threatened. . The trustees' committee said the accusations were false and that legion officials agreed "their charges were inaccurate in imporwnt particulars." The committee also upheld Knopf s legal right to note his objection to arms bearing on the draft card. But, the committee's report said. Dr. Knopf "by his conduct in this matter exposed himself, the University and all of its con stituency to a grievous misun derstanding." It continued, "We believe that he owed a duty to the Univer sity to refrain from expression of views or any action which could be construed as commit ting the university to any posi tion on such a vital question without consultation with and express authority of the Univer sity's governing board." LIFT LOHBAN TO AID HOUSING Washington. May 30 W Restrictions on lumber will be lifted to enable construction of emergency housing in Portland to go ahead. Senator McN'ary said today. He informed Lester W. Hum phreys, counsel for the Portland housing authority, that the war production board has promised removal of the lumber ban. WPB also had asked th muni tions board to release nails, plumbing supplies and other es sential building materials to Portland builders, the Senator said. May 30 JPt Madeline Webb, who will be 29 in three days, will spend this birthday and probably all the rest of her birthdays in jail, as the penalty for taking part In a murder that netted $13. A Jury convicted her last night of first degree murder In the March 4 robbery-slaying of Mrs. Susan Flore Reich, but recommended mercy that n.etnt life imprisonment. AH her moans "please, judge, I didn't do it, please" could not shake the verdict. Her lover. Ell Shonbrun, pleaded for he?, too. "She's as innocent as my mother, judge," he sobbed, even as the Jury announced a sterner verdict for him. Shonbrun and a third defend ant. John D. Cullen, were found guilty of first degree murder without a mercj recommenda tion, automatically dooming them to death in the electric chair. The three were convicted of killing Mrs. Reich in the course of robbing her of a $1,300 dia mond ring. Testimony showed they never were abl: to sell the diamond, and that the sale of the ring's mounting netted only $13. FRENCH MEAT RATION SIX OUNCES PER WEEK Vichy, France. May 30 (P) The June meat ration in un occupied France was fixed of ficiiilly today at 180 grams or less than six ounces per person a week. The ration may be consumed at any of four specified meals duilrg the week including two on Sunday. This step la being taken to release help for defense work and to conserve many fountain items and rationed foods, ac cording to Dais Franklin, spokesman for the group. Franklin's Cafe will close Mondays, Victory Cofe will close Tuesdays and Denny's Top Notch Cafe will close Wednesdays.
