Wash., May 29 (P This once serene city now being re-born into a war-boom tjwn with perhaps the nation'! top per capita population gain, waa tangled today In homing development nothing short ol fantastic. At the request of the Kaiser Shipyard Company, the Vancou ver housing authority la trying to erect 13,500 houses and a col ony of dormitories for shipyard workers soon to number 36,000 and DerhBDi more. A year ago Vancouver's 18,- 000 residents lived roomily in 6,000 homes and a few apart ments. Then the boom began. The fast-building Kaiser Company located a shipyard here and said It would be going full-blast by winter, employing 20,000. Vancouver took a deep breath and prepared. As fast as hous ing blueprints Jelled, shipyard blueprints were expanded. Now the shipyards are up to 12 ways and the labor needs up to 38, 000 men. Twice As Tough Almost before a sticS of lum ber was ordered, the housing problem had become twice as tough. The Vancouver housing au thority raced up five dormitor ies, costir.; about 2,000,000 in five weeks. Five thousand houses sprout ed through the spring rains be fore lumber freezing and prior ity troubles. Six hundred were to have been ready by next month. Before materials were thawed out, the schedule was 30 days behind. - The authority got approval for another 5,000 houses and five more dormitories. These would have put the authority within 3,500 houses of Its goal 13,500 houses, plus dormitories, t cost to Uncle Sam of ar ound (55,000,000, and all In one year. Yesterday the Kaiser Com pany moved the end of the rain bow back another notch; aald maybe the ultimata would be 45,000 men and 18,500 houses. This town used to get excited when a sawmill added a aecond shift Salem, May 29, ,ip Altho the strawberry canning season will open early next week, growers still were pressing the office of price administration to set a price for their crop. ' A representative of the OPA assured the growers committee nine days ago that a price would be set by May 22, George Tate, chairman of the growers com mittee, said. The committee was organized after growers complained that the OPA price freezing order made it Impossible for canners to pay growers the price they must have In order to break even on their crop. T AT EAGLE POINT Miss June Locke, 18-year-old evangelist, will be featured speaker In revival services at the Highway Tabernacle, Eagle Point, beginning Sunday, May 31, at 8 p. m. Miss Locke has preached since she was 10 years old and has traveled extensively in the northwest conducting evange- 1 V June Locke listlc campaigns. From Seattle she came to Medford where she has acted in an evangelistic capacity while attending school. Miss Locke will be assisted in the services by Miss Helen Wil son, Christian teacher. In addition to the nightly evangelistic meetings there will be special daily meetings for children and young people from 10 a. m. to 12 a. m. George Hunt, of the George A. Hunt Theatres, lauded local showgoers for the fine spirit shown throughout the 10 days of collections. "There never was any doubt in my mind that Medford would come through with flying col ors," he said, "but this amount exceeded all expectations. Even the youngsters came prepared to contribute their pennies and nickels and dimes and made sure they weren't missed during col lections. Contributions of five and 1C dollars, even of 20; were not at all unusual, with quar ters, halves and dollars making up most of the balance.
