To launch the spring often five against cancer in Jackson county, which will open offici ally Saturday, April 25, a tea. was held Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ralph Bou telle, county chairman, who conducted last year's successful drive. Special guests were members of the Junior group of the Jack son County Public Health asso ciation, who will , preside in booths to be opened in the banks and various business es tablishments of Medford and Ashland Saturday. These booths will remain open for the remain der of April. Directing the Junior group in this particular phase of the campaign will be Mrs. I. E. Schuler and Mri. Mar garet Henry. Would Enroll All Assisting Mrs. Boutelle on the county-wide committee, with the aim to enroll everyone In I Jackson county in the army to tight cancer, are: Mrs. Harry Holmes, Mrs. T. E. Daniels. Mrs. Mary Simonds, Mrs. Porter J. Neff. Mrs. I. E. Schuler, Mrs. Moore Hamilton, Mrs. Horatio Gates, Mrs. Frances Cochran. Mrs. Harry Nordwick, Mrs. Margaret Fabrick, Mrs. Marga ret Henry, Mrs. H. E. Sims and Mrs. C. E. Myers. All service clubs, Parent Teacher associations and the Granges will be contacted in the drive. Literature will be presented Saturday at the meet ing of the Pomona Grange and a special effort made to get the facts before people, who were missed in the initial 1941 cam paign in Jackson county, carried on by the Women"s Field Army for the Control of Cancer. Defense Measure There will be no house to house canvass this year, Mrs. Boutelle stated yesterday, but dollar members, who enrolled for 1941, will be asked to renew for 1942. The United States government has designated this work of saving actual lives and saving the time of the two per sons it takes to care for a cancer case, as a primary defense mea sure. It Is hoped that people will call at the booths and obtain their literature without hesi tance. There will be boxes on the tables for receipt of money from those who have it to give. The literature, however. Is available to ell, free of charge. To help with existing cases of cancer in Jackson county and for early diagnosis to cure and prevent other cases, one penny is needed from every man, woman and child in Jackson county, Mrs. Boutelle explained. The first weapon to be used in the war, however, is Informa tion, and the field army is eager to get information into the hands of all people. Encouraged By Case One of the most important niwn nf literature to be distrib uted is the Lay Primer of Cancer, written by a medical memDer oi the American Society for the Control of Cancer. It is a brief, frank talk about cancer and its possible cure. It will be distribut ed at the booths in banks and various stores. Telegraph Offices In Posloffices Is Merger Proposal Washington, April 24 m Secretary of Commerce Jones submitted to a senate interstate commerce subcommittee today a proposal from President Roose velt for leasing postoffice quar ters where available for use by consolidated telegraph company contemplated under pending leg islation. Jones toM the subcommittee that both he and the president favored the objectives of the leg islation which would provide for consolidation of all domestic tele graph companies in a single agency. It also would permit Interna tional telegraph systems to merge. Jones said the president had believed there were hundreds if not thousands of places in the United States where it would be an economy to the government, to the telegraph service and a convenience to the public to have the telegraph office In the post office.
