Hal Turpin Blanks Oakland, 4-0 as Seattle Opens Home Season,, T AS 12,000 WATCH Portland Wins Again on Balk in 10th Inning Marv Owen Scores Clincher. By the Associated Pfmi It'i been a good many yean since Hal Turpin, the Oregon farm boy, exchanged hit denimi lor a Seattle baseball uniform, but never has he plied his adopt ed trade to better effect than now. That Is an encompassing state ment, for consistently in seasons past, Turpin has achieved the king of pitching records to pro voke unconcealed mouth-watering on the part of rival club owners. Two years ago, for. Instance, he won 23 games for his team. Last year the showing was 20 against six losses for the high est pitching percentage among the Coast leagues fulltimers nd the second lowest earned run average. Yet it looks as if the best is Still to come, so far this season Turp has pitched four times and won four. Ten days ago against Los Angeles he turned in the league's only non-hitter of re cent record. And last night he blanked the Oakland Acoms, 4-0, to the de light of roughly 12,800 first night Seattleites, the loop's larg est single congregation of the year to date. Regains Lead Not only were the first nlght ers edified by Turpln's perform ance but also by its result. The victory pushed the Ralniers back into first place ahead of the Oaks, whose Jack Salveson struck out more and walked fewer players than Turpin but weakened in the two middle in-, nlngs to give Seattle all its runs. Turpin started a bit fuzzily, allowing a pair of hits in each of the first two frames, but when this failed to result In seri ous damage ha settled down to his task and gave out only three more safeties the rest of the way. From them and their strato spheric percentages, you drop directly to Hollywood and Los Angeles, which Jointly straddle the .800 mark, the former thru Its 10-innlng, 8-7 loss to Port land last night, the latter by virtue of its 7-1 victory over Sacramento. Still lower In the scale but not by much and apparently on the upgrade after three succes sive wins comes San Diego. The Padres licked San Francisco, 8-2 last night. However, Tiger entry remains speculative since the event is of invitational nature and Medtora participation Is yet to be con firmed by the California school. If Medford is accepted, Acheson will take at least 11 men with a few others going providing transportation can be arranged. Definite plans have been made by the Tigers to compete in the Southern Oregon-Northern Cali fornia meet at Klamath Falls on Friday, May 1. The event, whicn has been handled by the Lions' club, was moved up from a date later in May. Acheson is making prepara tions for conducting the district meet here on May 9. George Eads Misses 300 Game by Single Pin in Keg Contest Just one pin, which failed to tor pie on the 12th ball, pre vented George Eads from enter ing bowling's hall of fame with a perfect 300 game in a chal lenge doubles match at the Medford alleys last night. Eads registered 11 strikes In a row, but his 12th fling was a little light in the pocket and the five-pin was left standing. Even though he didn't get that 300-game his 299 score was the highest single tally ever bowled in Medford under league condi tions; new pins and a foul man making the match official. Eads' lofty score, coupled with the 211 game rolled by his partner, Charles Adair, com bined to produce a new record doubles score of 510 in their match with Dick Porterfield and Earl Sims. F, Philadelphia, April 23 P It's New York university against the field In the Penn relays at Franklin field tomorrow and Saturday as the Violets defend three relay titles in the two-day competition. A year ago the Violets, an chored by famed Leslie Mac Mitchell, romped off with the sprint and distance medley events and the four-mile relay while finishing second in the mile and third in the 880. Emil Von Elling, NYU coach, has announced MacMitchell will again run anchor in four races. Tomorrow he will run in the distance and sprint medley and on Saturday In the two and four-mile events. Twelve months ago, MacMitchell ran a 4.13 8 mile to win the distance medley State . Braneli , and 1.54 1 half-mile to cop the) sprint medley. He won the four mile title with a 4 09.4 mile and in the one-mile relay did a 48.1 quarter to finish on the heels of Campbell Kane, of Indiana. The former New York City schoolboy champion displayed keen form during the indoor campaign and is expected to bo better out-of-doors.
