Firemen Called Firemen were summoned to Helen's Drive-In on South Riverside avenue about S a. m. today when a refrigerator motor shorted and caught fire. Damage was re ported as slight. The chemical truck answered the call. ) Attend Funeral Mr. and Mrs. William Unrath and two daugh ters of Roseburg motored to this city yesterday where Mr. Un rath attended the funeral of Ed Walker, state police sergeant. Mrs. Unrath is a niece of Mrs. Susan Eads of 29 Kenwood avenue. Suffers Burns Troy Elkln nith Williams, Seattle, Wash., who suffered back bums early yesterday morning when he bed ded too close to a camp fire near the stock yards, was re leased from the Sacred Heart hospital this morning. Police took him to the hospital yester day. Local Visitors Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Pruyn of Columbus. Kas., are visiting Mr. Pruyn's brother. Jur. Bradford Pruyn of 208 smith Central avenue. This is Mr. Pruyn's first visit to the coast and the couple, being weu Impressed with the country, may consider locating In the west. Gun Dischargee James Win niger, 1063 Court street, was treated at the Sacred Heart hos pital about 7:30 a. m. today for wounds received when his .22 caliber rifle discharged as he was removing it from under the seat of his auto. The bullet pierced his arm and went thru the muscles under his arm. Win niger, cantonment employe, was sent to the hospital by city police. He returned home later this morning. Plane Passengers Leaving by United Mainliner this noon avwere C. Ritter and G. Bonnell t(o Portland and L. Hamilton to Seattle. V. Arvisen arrived from Portland this forenoon and B. Fadel departed for Sacramento. G. Canary departed for Portland early this morning. Arriving last midnight from Portland were Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Ny- gaard and daughter. Leaving for San Francisco were M. Mayo and W. O'Connell. Leaving last night for Portland were J. Fleshman and G. Yodder. R. Walesby departed early last night for Portland. Arriving late last evening from Portland were Mr. and Mrs. B. Griggs and infant, R. Skinner and Can ary. Leaving for Los Angeles were L. Williamson and W. Bradley. Mrs. L. Horn left for Boise, Ida., yesterday afternoon. Arriving early yesterday after noon were Mrs. K. French from Portland and P. Winn from Seattle. Also taken was a brown leather billfold contain ing a $10 bill. The purse con tained a union book, receipts and other papers. v Badminton Classes Those who enjoy h- ,-ime of badmin ton are invited io a mixed adult group now playing Tuesday and Thursday nights from 8:30 until 10 o'clock at the Roosevelt school on Queen Anne avenue. Those interested are asked to bring their own racquets. A small charge will be made each night to cover cost of the shut tlecocks. Painfully Hurt Mrs. Guy Applewhite of Ashland suffered painful injuries when she slip ped and fell to the pavement near the Ashland postoffice Monday. The fall broke her eye glasses and a piece of glass cut her eyebrow, necessitating five stitches to close the wound. Mrs. Applewhite is the wife of Guy Applewhite, chairman of the country's selective board No. 1. Navy Enlistments Enlisting in the U. S. navy at Portland the past few day's were John W. Thurman, manager of the Acme Cleaning company; Lawrence Towndrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Towndrow of 1036 West 10th street; Donald Grant and William Harrison, both of Cen tral Point; Henry Deiss of Rogue River, Franklin Evans of Ash land and Walter Phelps of Grants Pass, according to J. M. Carpenter, local recruiter for the U. S. navy. Civilian Defense Activities The schedule for public classes to be given by Medford's civi lian war council instructors, who attended the recent civilian de fense training school under the direction of Prof. Paul R. Washke, was announced today. The classes will be held in three locations, the Junior high school, county courthouse audi torium and Jackson school, and will start at 7:30 each night. A. R. Clutch, Thursday night will be Newbury and Fred Fry and Friday night Newbury and Dr. Glutch. Guy Davis and G. W. Kelling ton will instruct the classes at Jackson school Thursday, Friday and Monday nights. It was explained that voters in precincts 32 and 34 (Ficht ner's garage and city hall) should attend the Junior high classes, voters in precincts 33, 35 and 40 (134 South Ivy street, Jackson hotel and courthouse) should at tend the courthouse classes, and voters in precincts 50, 51 and 52 (1708 West Main street, Jack son school and Junior high) should attend the Jackson school classes. April 15 (A) Dan A. West, director of the OPA consumer division, urged Oregon and Washington home owners yesterday to change from oil to coal or wood heat this winter. In a government bulletin from Washington he said trans portation difficulties made it advisable to install grates In furnaces wherever possible.
