SUITE FOLK . VITAL TUNGSTEN Wide World Features Stibnite, Idaho If Stibnlte looks like a ghost town to a ten derfoot it's because all the min ers are down in the earth getting out tungsten. You may not know it, stran ger, but this mountain village away up in the everlasting hills of Idaho is aiming to produce one-fourth of the nation's re quirements of that vital defense metal by June. It takes hard men to produce hard metal, metal so tough it's used for cutting tools, armor plate, guns and projectiles. These men at Stibnlte are so hard they're hauling out ore con centrate over a back-breaking road that .men of weaker fiber said couldn't be kept open. The snow is four feet deep on the level, if you can find any level spot. Two men froze to death in the area this winter. Before the Bradley Mining Co., a San Francisco concern, got its 'winter operations under way the skeptics said a new road would have to be built, a road that would cost $1,000,000. It's 80 miles from Stibnite to the railroad at Cascade, in Ida ho's mountainous and misnamed Valley county that's still away up in the air. About 30 tons of metal comes out over that 80 miles every day. By June the company expects to double its output, have 250 or 300 men working instead of 150 and get out 20,000 units of tungsten concentrate per month. That's about 240,000 pounds of tungsten ore. The workings produce anti mony and cinnibar, too. Gold and silver are there, also, but those ordinarily prec ious metals aren't so important in war time. Stibnite is no grass root, get-rich-quick-and-get - out diggings. Its more ardent back ers say there is enough ore blocked out to keep the trucks hauling ore until Landmark Summit is worn down to a but ton. And that'i more than a mile high, mister.
