SOCIETY and CLUB NEWS of the WEEK 8T BETTY SHOEMAKER Flynn Sisters Wed, Announce Marriage Date Of Interest to friends In south ern Oregon Is the marriage to day of Miss Dorothy Flynn and announcement of the betrothal of Miss Jackl Flynn, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Diamond Flynn of this city. Miss Dorothy Flynn will be come the bride of Charles Don ald Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ross of Dallas, Ore., at he United Presbyterian church in West All is. Wis., at 4 o'clock this afternoon. For her wedding outfit the ride has chosen a blue silk Jer sey redingote over a printed silk jersey dress, with white acces sories. A corsage of gardenias, bouvardla and rosebuds will complete her costume. The bride's mother, who is In West Allis to attend the cere mony, has selected a blue suit for the occasion. . The bride-elect attended Ore gon State college where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. For the past eight months she has been employed at the First National bank in this city. . Mr. Ross graduated from Ore gon State college in December In mechanical engineering and was affiliated with Kappa Sigma fraternity. He is now employed by the Allis Chalmers corpora tion in West Allis, Wis. ' They plan to make their home in Milwaukle, Wis. ' Prior to her marriage Miss Flynn was honored at numerous bridal showers by her friends in this city. The betrothal of Miss Jacki to Ed Allworth, son of Major and Mrs. E. C. Allworth of Corvallis, has been announced by Miss Tlynn's parents. The ceremony will be an event of Saturday, April 18 at St. Mark's Episcopal church in this city. - Miss Flynn is a sophomore at Oregon State college and Is a member of Kappa Gamma sor ority. Mr. Allworth is senior at Oregon State college and af filiated with Kappa Sigma fra ternity. They plan to reside In Cor vallis. t Birthday Party Enjoyed by Guests At McDonald Home A birthday party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. E. McDonald Saturday afternoon celebrated the fifth and eighth birthdays of Junior and Calvin McDonald, sons of Mr. and Mrs. McDonald. Games were played and prizes were awarded to Donnie Norris, Roy Doe, Douglas McNeal and Joanne Christian. The birthday table was decorated in a patri otic motif with Individual fav ors marking covers for the guests. A large and small birth day cake with eight and five lighted candles were served. Junior and Calvin received many gifts. Attending were Donnie and Nancy Norris, Susan Brill, Roy and Joham Doe, Douglas Mc Neal, Robert and Joanne Chris tian, Shirley Jeschke, Marilyn Marvel, Millie Hodges, Harold Hodges and the honored guests. Mrs. McDonald was assisted by Mrs. Paul Doe. Pocahontas Lodge Holds Meeting Pocahontas lodge met In reg ular session Friday evening at which time Orva Taylor was reinstated. Study Club To Hear Author's LUe, Book Thursday Morning Study club members will hear an Interest ing program Thursday at 9:30 a. m. at the Girls' Community clubhouse when Mrs. Kenneth Wells reviews the life of the author, Charles Morrow Wilson and Mrs. John A. Gammlll gives a review of his book, "Central America." Visit At Home Of Friends Here Mr. and Mrs. Kermlt Glew and two sons of San Jose, Cel., are visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Murdock on West Tenth street. The Giews have been visiting in Tacoma, Wash., and are eiiroute to Cali fornia. Attend Lodge Meeting In Ashland Mrs. Irene Shirley and Mrs. Margery Pearson of this city at tended the Royal Neighbors of America lodge meeting in Ash land Wednesday evening. Four afternoon concerts are planned. Well known throughout southern Oregon for her musical abilities, Mrs. Epler has appeared in numerous musi cal programs in this city. Reception Honors , Med ford Residents At Church Parlors The parlor of the First Pres byterian church was the scene of gathering Thursday after noon when Mrs. Josephine Iver son and her daughter, Mrs. May. nard Putney of 60 Ross court were honored with a reception. Hostesses were members of the Presbyterian Missionary society and the Merrltt .circle of which they are members. Assisting in the receiving line were Mrs. Sherman L. Divine, Mrs. Glen - Sanders and Mrs. John E. Gribble. Featured dur ing the afternoon were vocal se lections by Mrs. D. R. Smith and violin solos by Miss. Alice Brill with Mrs. Verl O. Falling accom panying both artists. Jonquils and spirea . formed decorations and were arranged by Mrs. H. F. W. Spilver. As a token of long friendship Merrltt circle presented Mrs. Iverson with the guest book in which those present had in scribed their names. Mrs. Iver son and Mrs. Putney, who have long been active in the work of the Presbyterian church, are leaving soon for Grants Pass where they will make their home. Eagles Auxiliary Plans Initiation Initiation is planned by mem bers of Eagles auxiliary at the Eagles hall Thursday at 8 p. m. Eleven candidates will be initi ated. Those having last names beginning with the letters of the alphabet from N to Z are asked to bring a cake for the social hour. Entertainment is a'o planned. The final card party, sponsored by the auxil iary, will be hefd April 14 at 8 p. m. Auxiliary members and the drill team are asked to par ticipate in the Army Day par ade Monday and to meet at the hall at 6:45 p. m. Charter Members To Be Honored Reames Chapter, No. 68. Croucher, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Frank Croucher of this city and Sergeant Tommy Dallaire, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dallaire of Weavervllle, Cal., In Yuma, Ariz. Sergeant Dallaire Is stationed with the U. S. army at Fort Rosecrans, Cal., and expects to leave soon for officers training school in Kentucky. Mrs. Dallaire, until recently. was employed by the Oregon California Fast Freight, Inc. and upon her husband's depar ture for the east will return to Medford to make her home until his graduation. Both are graduates of Med ford high school and before en tering the army Sergeant Dal luire was employed by the Pa cific Fruit and Produce conv pany In this city. He and his parents are former Medford residents. Public Invited To Judy Concert The music committee of the First Baptist church presents Miss Helen Judy In concert Tues day evening at 8 o'clock at the church. The public is Invited. A former Medford girl. Miss Judy has studied voice under Philip Manual of Chicago for three years and recently has appeared as vocalist in several of the larger churches in Chi cago. Last October Miss Judy had the leading part in the Ancient Music Festival held in that city. Royal Neighbors Obligate Candidate Royal Neighbors of America obligated Ruth Bismark at the meeting held Thursday evening at the I. O. O. F. hall. Visiting member was Mrs. Edna Gates of Palo Alto, Cal. Plans were discussed for the April 16 meet ing which will be In the form of a regular business session. At that time plans will be completed for the district con vention to be held In this city May 8 and 9. The two-day ses sion will open with a meeting Friday at 10 a. m. and close with a banquet given by members of Olive Rebekah lodge Saturday evening. i College Club Meeting Planned Mrs. F. D. Observe Golden Anniversary o ' ! Dr. and Mrs. Charles T. Swee ney of the Old Pacific highway celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Monday. During the afternoon and evening over 200 friends called at the Sweeney home to extend their best withes to the couple. Mary Elza Cleland and Dr. Sweeney were married in War rensburg, Mo., March 30, 1892, Just one year after Dr. Sweeney had taken up the practice of medicine. The couple had known each other since early childhood, both having been born in War rensburg. Later they moved to Great Falls, Mont., where they resided for 12 years and then to Oregon where the Sweeneys have made their home in Medford over 25 years. Mrs. Sweeney is past matron of Order of Eastern Star, past queen of Daughters of Nile and past president of the Oregon State Medical auxiliary. Dr. Sweeney is past president of the Jackson county, southern Ore gon, Oregon and Pacific coast Medical Societies, past worthy master of two grand Jurisdic tions, Montana and Missouri. A F. and A. M., and active in civic enterprises during his residence here. Business Women Initiate New Member at Dinner Business and Professional Wo men's club held their semi-annual emblem and initiation cere mony at the dinner meeting at Hotel Holland Thursday eve ning. Vina Cellura was initiated during the ceremony. The program Included ac cordion selections by a quartet of Eve Prentice's Accordlonettes In patriotic costumes and sev eral piano selections by Helen Lageson. June Erlckson and her com mittee were in charge of the program and the dinner tables were decorated with the club colors, green and yellow. Eight een were present. Lady Lions To Meet At Lawrence Home Mrs. Fred Lawrence, 1422 Euclid avenue, will entertain members of Lady Lions at her home Wednesday with a 1 p. m. luncheon. Cheney of Aber- line, Kas., who received second honors, and Dr. Sweeney have corresponded for the past 50 years. Dr. Chaney remembered Dr. Sweeney on his 50th wed ding anniversary with a desk pen. Guests attended from Jackson county, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls and Ashland. The rooms were decorated with bouquets and potted plants sent them by their many friends. The service bouquet of yellow flowers and tapers. Surrounding the center table was centered with a piece and punch bowl were wreaths of gold leaves. The guest book was in charge of their grandson, Bobbie Day of Portland. Assisting during the open house hours were Mrs. Ray Sweeney of Warrensburg, Mo., Mrs. Edith Powell of Corvallis, Mrs. R. C. State President Visits Southern Oregon W.C.T.U. Mrs. Fred Tooze, Jr., state president of the Women's Chris tian Temperance Union, from Salem is spending the next few days in this city and In Ashland Mrs. Tooze arrived here last evening from Grants Pass and Is a house guest of Mrs. M. Russell, 803 North Riverside avenue. She will meet with members of the Medford W. C. T. U. unit Tuesday at 1 p. m. at the First Presbyterian church when a luncheon is planned in her honor. Monday is to be spent in Ashland where she will be entertained at the home of Mrs. Lulu Howard. Mrs. Tooze for the past two years has been assistant and secretary to the pastor of the First Baptist church in Salem. Before returning to her home she will visit in Klamath Falls, Madras and Bend. Daughters of Job Schedule Meeting Daughters of Job will meet In regular session at the Masonic temple Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. 34 NORTH HOLLY Tingley-Smith Wedding Read In Reno Cathedral Miss Elouise Tingley, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Tingley of South Newtown street, and Robert Earl Smith of Sacra mento, Cal., son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Smith, were married March 28 In Reno, Nev., at the St. Thomas Cathedral by the Rev. Father Buel. The bride wore a yellow suit with brown accessories and a corsage of brown orchids. She was attended by her sister, Mrs. June Jewell of San Leandro, Cal. William Smith, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Following the ceremony a wedding supper was served at the Colombo hotel and the cou ple departed for Bakersfield, Cal., where they will make their home. Mrs. Smith graduated from Medford high school and at tended Sacramento Junior col lege. Mr. Smith attended Christian Brothers Catholic col lege in Sacramento. The wedding date had been announced for May 18 but due to Mr. Smith's transfer from Sacramento to Bakersfield by the Bell Telephone company, of which he is an employe, the wedding was advanced to March 28. The parents of the bride and groom and intimate friends at tended the wedding. District Legion Conclave Planned Officers, committee chairmen and members of American Le gion auxiliary are urged to at tend the district conference to be held tomorrow at the Girls Community clubhouse. Nine units will be represented as well as state officers of the depart ment of Oregon. National vice president, Mrs. Bertha Andreson will be guest of the conference and bring a message from the national organization. The district program opens at 1:30 p. m. and a banquet will be held at Hotel Medford at 5:30 p. m. Local unit members are also asked to Join in the Army Day parade at 7:15 p. m. and attend the demonstration at the high school football field when State Commander Joseph K. Carson will be one of the speakers. Luncheon was served followed by an afternoon of cards with Mrs. Ray Wright holding high score. The luncheon tables were ar ranged with an Easter motif, a large yellow Easter basket fill ed with colored eggs centering the table. Primroses and candles were used on the Indi vidual tables.
