Society and Clubs by Betty Shoemaker Flower Show Exhibit Open To Public Jackson county garden clubs and individuals are invited to participate in the display of specimen exhibits and flower arrangements, featuring datfo dils alone or other bulbous flowers at the annual Spring Flower show to be held at ihe Hotel Holland Saturday. The display is sponsored by the Medford Garden club and ex hibits will be received from 8:30 until 10:30 a. m. The exhibit ' will be open to the public from 21:15 a. m. until 10 p. m. Working on the show are Mrs. W. H Bailey, chairman, and committees, daffodils or narcissi entries, Mrs. L G. Gent ner, Mrs. J W. Jacobs and Mrs. H. T. Nichol; flower arrange ments, Mrs. E. R. Job's Daughters Honor Mothers Daughters of Job entertained their mothers Sunday morning I with a n an o'clock breakfast at the Masonic temple and later the group attended the nurning service at the iirst raeinocisi church. Breakfast was prepared by the Victory Social club and served by fathers of bethel members. The tnhle were decorated with bethel colors purple and white, with clusters of gardenia corsages forming centerpieces. Later guests pulled twined white nH rtnmlA strpamers and re ceived their corsages. Miss Do lores Ray and committee were In charge of arrangements. Church To Present 1 Sacred Concert The First Christian church at Ninth street and South Oakdale avenue is presenting Effie Her bert Kurtz in a recital of sac red and secular music Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock. Mrs. Kurtz will be accompanied by Mabel Hartley Sims, pianist, ) who also will play a group of numbers. , A free will offering will be taken at the recital for emer gency missionary work of the Christian church. The public is Invited. Past Chief's Club At Watkins Home Past Chief's club will meet Friday for 1 p. m. covered dish luncheon at the home of Mrs. Delia Watkins, 19 Mistletoe street. Madford Visitor Leaves For North Mrs. Belle Paddock of Wayne, Neb., who has been a visitor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Younger, left recently for the north where she will visit. Returns Horn After Visit Mrs. James Harmon and small daughter Susan Ann, of Twin Falls, Idaho, left last eve ning by train for their home after spending the past two weeks in this city visiting Mrs. Harmon's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Green, 16 North Front street. - Medford Resident At Klamath Falls Miss Betty Frey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Frey 820 East Main street, is spending spring vacation in Klamath Falls where she is the house guest of Miss Dorothy Davis, former Medford resident. A. Ayres of Jack sonville and Harold White, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. White also of Jacksonville. The ceremony was read by the Rev. E. N. Mal lory. The bride chose a navy blue tailored suit with white acces sories and a corsage of pink tosebuds. She was attended by Miss Delores Smets who wore a corsage of talismen rosebuds. Ancil Gunter was best man. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the home of the bride s parents. Out-of-towr. guests at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Mrtln and son Michael of Klamath Falls. brother-in-law and sister and nephew of the bride. Mrs. White is a graduate of Jacksonville high school and an employe of Bear Creek Or chards. Mr. White, a former student of the Southern Oregon College of Education, is em ployed at Camp White. The couple will make their home in this city. Phoenix Lodge Holds Initiation Phoenix. March 26 (Spl.) At the regular meeting March 19 Phoenix Neighbors of Woodcraft initiated two new members They were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Thompson of Phoenix. Advance night was observed and the Incoming officers sat at their new offices as an advance duty before they are installed at the first regular meeting in April. At the meeting the losing team of a recent contest served refreshments to the winning team. The next meeting is to be installation of officers, and all members are urged to attend. Grade Teachers Hear Mr. Carlton Medford Grade Teachers as sociation met Monday evening at the Girls' Community club house and heard E. W. Carlton, member of the executive board of the Jackson county recrea tional committee, talk on recre ational problems consequent to the cantonment. Miss Nancy and Phoebe Swem played several musical selec tions. Washington school teach ers provided refreshments and Jackson school teachers were in charge of entertainment. . Medford Skiers At Crater Lake A group of young Medford skiers are spending several days at Crater Lake national park where they are enjoying skiing. They plan to return to this city Sunday evening. Among the party are Misses Mildred and Betty Jean McKenzie, Phyllis Fields, Ruth Andrews and Peggy Young. Also Sam Young, Warren Holbrook, Marc Jarmin and Bill Wall. MEDFORD MAIL Zonta Members Hear Dr. Cordon Dr. Erma Gordon of Port land, Oregon publicity chair man for the United China Re lief drive, was guest speaker at the meeting of Zonta at the home of Mrs. Effie Kurtz Mon day evening. During the busi ness session which preceded the talk Zonta members voted to contribute to the drive. Mrs. Margaret Fabrick, prominent Zonta member, is drive chair man for Jackson county vicin ity outside of Medford. The members also voted to send Mrs. Kurtz to the district Zonta convention to be held in Olympia, Wash., April 18 and 19 as the Medford delegate. Lodge To Meet At Redman Hall Pocahontas lodge members will hold a white elephant card party at Redman hall Friday at 7:30 p. m. Members are re quested to bring gifts wrapped. in charge of refreshments are Esther Hobbs, Ethel Haertle, Bertha Mae and Orval Hayes. Stat President Will Be Honored Mrs. Robert Spratlin of Port land, president of the F. L. clubs of Oregon will be in this city Friday at which time the local F. L. club will hold a din ner at Hotel Jackson at 6:45 p. m. in her honor. JAPS SELL FARM Portland, March 26 (P) Al Morrison, white farmer, was on the truck farm of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Honma, Portland-born Japa nese, today, the first person aid ed by the farm security adminis tration in locating on the farm of a Japanese. TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, Colorful Pictures of Pacific Islands Open Armchair Cruise Colorful pictures of Hawaii and the Philippine Islands gave spectators at the first of a series of "armchair cruise" meetings at the Girls Community clubh ouse last evening an inside view of the beauty and geography of the Pacific islands. Mrs. David D. Roberta, assisted by her husb and, D. D. Roberts, presented an interesting talk on the Pacific islands, and presented moving pictures taken by their son, R ichard Roberts, who is with the U. S. air corps in the far Pacific. The pictures have been taken over a period of several years and showed among other inter esting sights sunset scenes, the shore line of many islands, the "March of the Virgins to the Shrine" and Hilo Hattie and her troupe of entertainers perform ing on the beach at Honolulu for the benefit of island visitors. Mrs. Roberts, who visited in Honolulu with her son several years ago, spoke of the oleasant generous and lovable character of the Hawaiian. She said that there are 1,114 islands in the Hawaiian group, the largest of which is Hawaii. She described the hula dance as a pantomime of music and art and explained interesting facts concerning the many types of leis worn by resi dents and visitors on the islands. Among the many buildings pictured were the Pan American building, Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Morman temple, established in 1820, and other scenes included pineapple fields, rice paddies, Diamond Head, the queen's oath tub, Wakaiki beach, street scenes with natives In colorful island dress. A trip from Honolulu to Manila by air also was shown with a stop at Wake Island where all buildings were de stroyed by a typhoon several years ago. Manila was establish ed in ,1581 and has grown to an island of strong importance in the western world. Particu larly pertinent to modern times was a trip through the West Point of the Philippines, estab lished in 1936 by General Doug las MacArthur. Located at Fort Camp John Hay, high in the mountains, this military school had ready for the U. S. govern ment 12 well trained divisions which were turned over to the U. S. government at the out break of the war. Mention was made of Jose Rizal, founder of the American school in the Philippines and also known as George Wash ington of the islands. A talented man, his abilities included edu cation, painting, author, physi cian, politics and many other talents. The pictures closed with a stop at a Moro island where the "March of the Virgins to the Shrine" was depictetl. Also in teresting was the home of the Moro chieftain which was built entirely of mahogany and Mlu- ted in the center of his village. Mrs. Roberts showed several articles sent to her from China, the Philippines and Hawaii, in- luding silver sponns, Manila perfume, fine linen and a pocketbook made from crushed The HOUSING SHORTAGE ODue to the construction of an army cantonment in the Medford area there is a serious shortage of both houses and rooms.
