ON CIA'S NEEDS AT LIONS MEET Dr. Erma Gordon, state direc tor of China relief, addressed the Lions club luncheon-meeting at the Hotel Medford, Wednes day, on affairs In China and their relation to the war. Dr Cordon pointed out that the stubborn and relentless opposl j tfon the Chinese are offering to , the Japanese, Is keeping a Jap- ' anese army of about a million ' men away from the conflict In the south sea. I Dr. Cordon pointed out that, due to Japanese Invasion, a tre mendous strain had been placed on the living conditions of the interior provinces. Almost fifty million people have been forced to the Interior; there have been 300,000 child casualties, and almost five million adults have sacrificed their lives, since the Invasion of China began, said Dr. Cordon. Accompanying Dr. Gordon, was C. E. (Pop) Gates, Medford Chairman of the present China relie drive, who stated $1 would buy food for a child for a whole month in China that $20 would clothe and feed a child for a year. The club voted to sponsor Troop 3, Boy Scouts, for the ensuing fiscal year. President Eston Humphrey stated that committeemen would be named Immediately to work with the icoutmastcr of Troop 3. A highlight of Dr. Cordon's visit was a round-table discus sion, in which she answered questions about Germany, where she resided, both before and after Hitler came into power. Highlights of the discussion were: "The system of enslave ment la more complete today than ever before in the history of the world methods of pun ishment are more effective: whole families suffer for the offens of one person. Germany is stronger than we think; Ger man nationals all over the world contribute financially nd work toward accomplish ment of the Hitlerian goal. Tit? German youth is trained from the time he is 10 years old to become a soldier; ha is taught that the German people are in vincible that, not in thousands of years has Germany been in vaded and that every worth while thing accomplished can be traced to German origin." . Music was afforded by a group of Eve Prentice's Accor-dianas. 6IGNE IN ITALY ' Portland, March 26. The former Slgne Rasmus.ien of Portland, erstwhile University of Oregon co-ed and Portland newspaper woman who married Nazi propagandist and went to Germany, has been in Florence, Italy, recently, her mother, Mrs. Sophie Rasmusscn learned today. Mail Tribune Ad Finds Dog Before Paper Published Mail Tribune classified ad vertising results before the ad is in the paper was the ex perience of Keith Barrow, 340 Edwards street yester day. Porky, his wire-haired bulldog, wandered away from home and Barrow de cided to try the "classified ad way." While placing the adver tisement at the Mail Tribune Lynn Jenkins, carrier boy, happened to overhear the de scription of the dog and told Barrow he had Just seen the dog on Fir street. Together the two set out in search of missing Porky and found him wandering about on Fir street. So it pays to advertise sometimes even verbally. S.P. GENERAL SHIFT San Francisco, March 26 IJP) A general shift in key posi tions in Southern Pacific was announced today as a result of retirement of two veteran exec utives. J. H. Dyer, vice president in charge of operations who has been with the railroad 54 years and C. M. Scott, San Francisco treasurer for the company, will retire April 1. President A. T. Mercler an nounced L. B. McDonald, gen eral manager, will succeed Dyer. C. F. Donnatin, assistant general manager, will replace McDon ald. J. W. Corbett, superintend ent of the Portland division will become assistant general manager, and In turn will be succeeded by M. L. Jennings, superintendent of the San Joa quin division. Communications Why Medford Must Have Meters To the editor: I attended last night's water board public meeting I had already investigated thoroughly the present water meter propo sition I was there to listen. Some of the arguments were foolish some showed intelli gent thought but lack of know ing the facta most of what was said was well prepared and to the point but. Not a single argument, for or against, was brought out that had not been thoroughly thresh ed out by the water board and army engineers, both before and after Pearl harbor but the public does not know that Personally, I am against meters, so Is all the water board, and plenty of others, but there is NO other answer at this time. It is going to have to be meters we are in a mili tary tone now. The men on the water board are among the most intelligent, successful business men Med ford has, capable of meeting big problems like this and get the correct answer. Let us leave It entirely with them: they KNOW what they are doing. People are not going to find meters as hard to take as they think. A few large water users will be hit, of course, but not the average citizen. I will have an even dozen meters on my properties so I should be Interested. Geo.
