Medford'i dream of a 194J state basketball championship was shattered by Frank Ramsey's Corvallis high quintet in the Willamette university gym here Friday night, 42 to 29, in a game that belonged to the Spartans from beginning to end. So blasted out of the championship running, the Tigers slipped into the spot to face Hank Andersons Baker Bulldogs Saturday evening ior inira Vi. At no time were tne Bengals in the lead as the surprising Spartans, led by the 12-point . performance of 200-pound Bob Belman and the 11-tally output of Jason Widmt-r, the red-haired forward, passed, dribbled and shot the locals dizzy. Corvallis led at the end of the first period. B to 7; at halftone, 17 to 11 and at the end of the third quarter, 27 to 20. He potted five field buckets and two free throws for i 12 points to tie with Reiman for high point honors, and played a grand floor game, his good work went for naught, however, in the face of the Spartans' relentless driving tactics and I .their zone defense. The Tigers played good basketball, much better than they did against Mac high and Hillsboro, but they simply couldn t match the pace set by the Spartans. Reiman s free throw gave Corvallis a 1 to 0 lead shortly after the gam opened, but Bill Wall tied it with a charity toss and that was one of the two times in the game the Tigers were even with the enemy. Bob Knoll raced In for a cripple for a 3 to 1 Corvallis bulge but Wall's corner shot deadlocked it at 3-all. However, Reiman came back to score with a cripple and Allan Anderson duplicated to put the Corvallis crew out front by a 7 to 3 tally, before Niedermeyer canned a free one for the Bengals. Reiman's two successful gift tosses put the winners ahead, 9 to 4, but Just before the first quarter ended Niedermeyer got another free throw and Herman hit from the corner. Herman and Fawcett sank free throws and Wall made a field goal in the second period, but more than equalizing this point-production were two field goals by Widmer and free throws by Widmer, Anderson and Rel man. Try Hard In Third The Bengals put up their best battle in the third period, with nine points to Corvallis' 10. Herman did most of the work whanging home three field buckets and a free throw while Wall was getting a two-pointer. Corvallis outscored the locals, 15 to 9, in the final heat. Faw cett, Herman and Monteith hit from the floor for the Tigers and Niedermeyer and Webber dropped in free throws. Wall left the game in the fourth period on personals. I COST STATE FOOD Portland, March 14 W Food prices are high in Oregon but still considerably under the peaks of World war No. 1, a survey of March 10 prices from 1918 to the present, compiled by the Portland Journal, showed to day. Butter, for example, was listed at 36g cents per pound whereas it reached 53 cents in 1918 and jumped to 62 cents in 1919 and 67 cents in 1920 before dropping off to a mid-48 cent average in the 1920's and a 30-cent and lower average during the de pression. Eggs were listed at 28 cents a dozen compared with 41 cents in 1919 and a high of 32 cents during the 1920's. Potatoes stood at $2.83 cents per hundred pounds compared to 1917's $3.50 and 1920's $6.00. TO BOOST HATCH Seattle, March 14. VP) United States turkey ranchers intend to buy or hatch about eight per cent more poults than last year, but in the western states, the increase will be about 24 per cent, the federal division of agricultural statistics reported today. The western growers, particu larly in the coastal states. specialize, however, in eggs for hatching, and their production per hen is the largest in the na tion. Senior Statistician H. C. R. Stewart said. Of the turkeys raised last year, about 44 per cent were sold in November and 40 per cent in December, the report added. Average weight was 1S.9 pounds, the heaviest on record for live birds. . SPEED LIMIT CUT TO SAVE RUBBER Washington, March 14. (JPh President Roosevelt has written state governors asking their co operation to conserve rubber by limiting the maximum speed of all motor vehicles to 40 miles an hour and requiring frequent checking of tires for possible re pair or retreading. The White House announced today that identical letters had been sent to the governors of all 48 states. "Reduction of speed limits and regular Inspection of tires," the president said, "constitute another important means of federal-state cooperation in the war effort." Dillon, Mont. (P) Dutch troops still are carrying on a large scale fight against the Japanese in Java, Sumatra and the Celebes, Lieut enant Governor Hubertus J. Van Mook of the N. E. I. declared here today. "We are still In radio contact with Sumatra and hope to estab lish additional communication with Java," he said in an inter view. The Dutch resistance might continue indefinitely, the lieutenant-governor said. Van Mook said he had learned from a flier who escaped as the Japanese arrived in Bandoeng that the invaders had been de layed an entire day by the un expectedly successful delaying tactics by Dutch troops.
